“Cmdr Alden’s office is here,” she pointed out a door to their right, “He is also our chief science officer, but he doesn’t use the office much. He’s usually in the biology lab, across the corridor.” She stepped into the lab and glanced around, “Cmdr Alden.” When the Cmdr had walked over. “Cmdr Alden this is 1st Lt Riss Ch’ethyniq. Our new Chief Engineer.”

Yeoman Rand

Roman was sitting in the lab with a stack of paperwork and a very grumpy look. When he looked up and saw Rand he smiled and set down his PaDD stylus. Then he saw the Lieutenant next to her, stood and headed over.

The Commander was tall and well-built, by no means a bodybuilder, but certainly athletic. His hair was neatly combed, his uniform without a speck or a wrinkle on it. He stood with perfect posture as he greeted the Lieutenant with a smile, sticking out a hand for a handshake. “Lieutenant Commander Alden, first officer and chief science officer,” he introduced himself with a crisp, posh English accent.

Riss took the offered hand in his own and gave it a single firm (but not too firm) shake and let go. “Lieutenant Commander, a pleasure Sir. The Yeoman was kind enough to give me brief tour. I do hope we are not interrupting.” he said. He looked around the room slightly and then returned his gaze to the man before him.

Roman shook his head. “Not interrupting anything, no.” He detested paperwork, and that’s all he was working on now. Anything was a welcome distraction. The lab was a moderately sized room with small alien critters in enclosures around the room’s perimeter. Several lab counters were in the room, all equipment and other things were neatly stored away when not in use. There’s were several science officers going about their jobs. “Ensign Rand does her job well and thoroughly. Her tours are a reflection of that.”

“Indeed, sir. She has been most helpful… even without working lifts.” and Riss chuckled slightly. “I know it is protocol on Federation vessels to meet with the Commanding and Executive officers upon arrival. Do you wish to do that now, Commander? Or should I come back later?”

“Come back later. I’d hate to interrupt Rand’s tour,” Roman said, flashing a little smile to Rand. “Whenever you have the time. I’m rarely in my office, look for me here.” It was always the first thing people learned about him. That if he was needed, he was probably to be found in his labs.

Riss came to attention and then inclined his head slightly. “Yes, sir. As soon as we are done. Thank you, Commander.” He then turned to Rand and said “Shall we continue?”

Rand inclined her head in a silent acknowledgement of the compliment. Then a brief salute before a crisp about face and heading back into the corridor. She nodded to Riss, “Next stop deck 12.” Rand called for the lift and stepped on. “Deck 12 contains a few science labs, the shuttlebay and storage and maintenance areas, tractor beam emitter 2, the matter/antimatter storage pods, emergency blast hatch, and main engineering.”

The doors opened and she stepped out, “Your office is port aft.” Rand stepped that way stopping at a door with a name plate that had already been updated,

“What would you like to see first, Sir?”

Riss looked around and smiled. This was going to be exciting. “Um… I think we should continue the tour outside of Engineering. Otherwise I’ll probably spend the next week in here and never complete my check-ins.”

Rand felt an answering smiled form across her features. Most department heads got to their area and just asked her to come back and get them when for their next check in. Which was fine either way with Rand. “Alright, we have a bit of time before your meeting with Cpt Rogers.” Heading back to the turbolift she called for deck 8. “This deck includes the lower deflector dish and phaser battery control. Escape pods are evenly spaced along the outside hull of this deck and decks 2, 3, and 7. The ship’s gymnasium is also on this deck. The gym is always open, but there are groups and classes offered as well. They are posted to the left of the door when you go in and on the ship’s schedule as well.”

“You all have thought of everything.” he said with a slight smile. “What kind of off-time activities are there?” he asked as the moved on.

As they walked Rand did a mental count. “The recreation hall is always open. There are card game nights. Mostly some form of poker, but some of the crew play Rummy or Bridge. There are plenty of board games. We have regular tournaments. Chess, checkers, ping pong, air hockey, or any other game we have. The crew will donate things for a prize basket or credits for a monetary prize. There are art groups and classes taught by someone in the crew. Chef Gorshin teaches a cooking class. There is the observation deck. Well it’s not really a deck, it’s just a large empty room with lots of windows. The gym has classes but also hosts boxing and martial arts tournaments. Security hosts target practice and rankings. Every so often the senior staff have the gym cleared out and host a large dinner, dance or other function for the whole crew. If you like music, making or listening, there is a group on board that gets together and practices and has what they call mini concerts. There is a literary club.”

They entered the lift and Rand called for deck 1. “Oh there were tentative plans to convert one of the larger storage areas to an arboretum. Cpt Rogers approved it, but the previous CE never got the chance to look into it before she left.” The lift stopped and Rand stepped out. “Most ships only contain the bridge on deck 1. The independence class is different with a larger deck. So deck 1 also contains the Impulse Engines and Fusion Reactors. Deuterium Fuel Storage Tanks 1 and 2 and fill port are to starboard and tractor beam emitter 1 is to foreword port. 3 connects directly to the bridge and opens to the port side rear of the command chair. Otherwise you access through a door that is starboard rear of the command chair. You will have to give voice recognition to access the bridge.”

“Understood. And thank you. I trust I’m not keeping from other duties, am I?” Riss asked after the verbal upload was complete.
