Sentinel had a standard crew compliment of 120. According to the ship records and Rand’s excellent memory they had no visiting personnel or VIPs nor were they evacuating anyone. So the ship compliment should stand at 120. Sentinel records stood at 121. Cursory glances at the roster didn’t immediately tell her what was wrong, or where the extra crew member was. The senior staff was well known so she didn’t think that was the place to start. In all the reading and plays she did someone who was up to no good always stayed in the lower ranks, as servants, the people who tended to be over looked in the grand scheme. But where? If she was after Roman she’d join the science department, he loved his work. But joining security would give them access to weapons.

Rand shuddered, was she really entertaining the idea that someone was going to try and kill Roman? That made her anxious in ways she’d never even imagined.

She pulled up the science department roster and began going through them and the numbers carefully one by one.

Rand

Rand didn’t like doing it but she checked out Franks, Valos, and Harvey. Being on Kelmao was the perfect opportunity, along with the storm, if they had wanted to harm Roman, but it also made the suspect pool very small, and at least in literature the antagonist would never make themselves so obviously a subject. This of course wasn’t literature, but good literature mimicked life. Scott was next on her list because who would suspect the newly graduated ensign that never never stopped running her mouth about everything and couldn’t keep a secret.

She checked their personnel records, but then she went back in the records looking for crew and department group photos to compare, and even for some of the Academy graduates going back into their pre-service records to find photos and details to make sure they all matched up.

Under Science, there were twenty six officers total. One was Roman himself. Then there was Franks, Harvey, and Valos that they’d gone to Kelmao with. Scott was on the list. That took care of five, leaving twenty-one more files to check.

Next on the list were NEnsigns Watts, Carpenter, Vash, Baker, Borgia, and Mendez. The reason Rand chose them next were they were all involved in the pranks issue in some way, either suspect or victim. Better to clear out the obvious suspects first.

Roman was in the lab, working. He wasn’t sure what else to do. Hide in his quarters? On the off-chance someone might try to kill him? It had been morning when they told Rogers about it, and now it was just before lunch. Roman had most of the day to go. Maybe he was rationalizing to avoid being afraid, but he felt like it was unlikely they’d go after him. It had been fourteen years, and he was written out of the will, though more than likely no one would know that. It gave him a sense of normalcy to be in the lab like nothing was wrong.

Rand paused then and went to the lab as she normally did over lunch. She new Roman was passing it off as nothing, but the whole situation had to be upsetting to him. Even if just the inconvenience of it all. She entered the lab, hating the feeling of suspecting these people she’d been working beside for the last year. She smiled at them all as they headed out for lunch as she pulled a container out of the storage cabinet and made her way over to Nibbles.

Rand

Roman was sitting at his desk, doing paperwork like always when she came in. After everyone had left for lunch, he went and stood by her at Nibbles’ enclosure. “Find anything?” There was an edge to his voice Rand would know meant he was hiding how much it was getting to him. Of all the ways he’d ever imagined himself going, getting murdered because his family had money was certainly never one of them. He hoped she’d say that there hadn’t been anyone extra on board.

Rand nodded and sighed, frustrated. “The Sentinel is currently running with a standard crew compliment of 120. But we have 121 on board. But when I break down each department we have exactly the right number of officers per department. However, when I total up the numbers, run inventory and cabin assignments it comes back with 121. So either something wrong is happening or the computer is having a mental breakdown and can’t add anymore.”

Rand

Roman frowned, he did not think the computer couldn’t add anymore. “So there is an extra crewman aboard but it isn’t immediately obvious who or what department they are.” Lovely. It was possible that it was just a paperwork or clerical mistake but Roman was getting the sinking feeling that was not it. And that meant he really did need to watch his back. “Keep looking into it.” There was that edge to his voice again, accompanied by a frown and those worried crinkles by his eyes.
