Roman knocked at 1710 precisely and stepped in when the door opened. He took a seat and shook his head. “Tea is fine. I don’t often drink, except the occasional Scottish coffee to sleep.” He said. “You had some ideas for the ring?” He asked, wanting to get right to it.

Randy didn’t drink either. He had the whisky for the Scottish coffee only. So it might strike Alden as odd that he was drinking it. “Well one, actually. Not sure it’s even something you would want.” Randy stood up from where he was leaning against the counter and made his way over to his bed. He opened a bedside drawer and then came back placing two velvet covered ring boxes in front of Alden. One black, one red.
That didn’t hit Roman right away, only after a moment did he realize it was odd for Randy to be drinking the whisky instead of keeping it for coffees. But he shrugged it off, he didn’t feel he knew Randy well enough personally to know if, when, or why, he’d choose to drink the whisky. Then he produced two ring boxes, and set them on the table.
The black contained to solid gold bands, nestled together. One a larger size and wider across..the other more delicate. On the outside of each, in Gaelic: Is ann le mo ghraid mise (l am my beloved’s)
On the inside of both: Agus is leamsa mo ghraidh, (And my beloved is mine). The red box contained a platinum engagement ring. The band was woven to resemble a vine culminating in a rose. Set in the center rather than a diamond, was a Rose Beryl Morganite carved with the shape of rose petals. Randy swallowed once before speaking. “These were our grandparents. The bands have been in our family for…a long time. This one,” Randy tapped the red box, “Our grandfather had designed for our grandmother.”
Randy
When Roman opened the black box, his surprise would be obvious. Two golden bands, engraved with Gaelic on the side. Roman knew enough of the language to understand the meaning of the enscriptions. They were beautiful rings, and exactly the style Roman was looking for. The red box contained an engagement ring, platinum. They were both perfect. “Won’t you want them? I assume you’re marrying somebody eventually?” He said.
Randy threw back a measure of the whisky. “She turned me down.”
“And… they won’t make her sad? I mean, they’re not the ones from the grandfather that…” The one that Rand had nightmares about, the one that died of a heart attack.

“It is his, but it’s a nice reminder of him and how much he loved our grandmother. And you know, Rand is sentimental like that.”
Randy
Roman smiled and nodded. Rand was definitely sentimental like that. He chose not to comment on Randy saying he’d been turned down. “She is. She’d love it, I’m sure,” he smiled again. “If you’re sure about this, I’d certainly owe you.” It wasn’t at all dissimilar to the Alden family rings - the ones his brother had gotten, no doubt. Though, the Alden family rings were silver, the woman’s had a diamond inset with a regal pattern around it. The man’s was a silver band with the same pattern on it, and both were engraved with the Alden family motto. To Roman, the rings sitting in front were priceless.
