“A chemistry project. All that math and all those elements,” Roman swirled a finger in the air, “I could swear I can still see them going about my head.” He picked the cheeseburger as well. “New officers are always good,” he commented to her other statement.

~ Roman

Rand grinned, “Better you than me. It confuses me just trying to transcribe it for the reports.” Rand had a solid grasp of basic chemistry, what it was, how it worked, how to work equations, but the level the labs were working on was far above her. Maybe that’s what she should do? Look into learning more about chemistry? That was a thought for later though. “New officers are always good. Lt Anders will be busy with so many new officers.” Rand found an empty table and sat down. She still didn’t like being around so many people, but at this time of the evening the galley was less crowded than usual.

Rand

Roman smiled and shook his head. “Some days it confuses me. Chemistry is a very different field from biology.” He commented as he sat down with her. Then he nodded again. “He will. Two new recruits in a week. He’s got a lot to do, I’m sure.” He smiled at her as he took a bite of his burger.

The next day was as equally busy, but instead of orientations, Rand was either in medical with Haadok or in her office studying. When she wasn’t running errands and tasks for the captain of course. Or the thousands of other things she helped out with. Rand remembered to set a timer and adhere to it though. She didn’t need to create another migraine from staring at the computer too long. It wasn’t like, after two years, she was used to cramming for finals in the Academy anymore.

Rand

It was during his lunch that Roman went looking for Randy, intent on asking him a few questions about all this proposal business. He wanted to do it at a time when Rand would just think he wasn’t in the lab because had something else to do, and sometimes he did miss lunch so that was what he picked. He still wouldn’t go into medical looking for Randy, so when he did his usual trick of summoning him by communicator, he asked Randy to meet him in his CSO office.

~ Roman

Randy sauntered into the office and sat down, a wide grin on his face. “Really Cmdr, we have to stop meeting like this. People will start to think we get along.” It was hard to tell if Randy was more amused by the idea of them getting along or that he enjoyed the verbal sparing with Alden. Either way he was amused. “So what can I do for you today?”

Randy

A tiny grin made its way onto his face before he could hide it. “Well, if you like, I could throw you out of here when we’re done.” He then turned a bit more serious and blurted what was on his mind. “I’ve been thinking… You were right. I should marry her. But I need a little input…” He smiled at Randy. “Nothing too personal, just ring preferences and the like.”

~ Roman

“Rolaigidh ar n-aithriche ‘nan uaighean. (Both our ancestors will roll in their graves.)” Though Randy was grinning like the Cheshire cat so it was obvious he didn’t care. “Alright, then.” He looked at Roman a moment then clapped his hands and rubbed them together. “I have no idea what her ideal ring would be, but the only jewelry she has are heirloom pieces. Some good quality some are junk. They have sentimental value. But I might have something for that. What are you thinking?”

Randy

Roman grinned at his statement, catching the gist of it. He gave an impartial shrug. “I don’t care what it looks like, as long as she’d like it. And if my wedding band sort of matches in style, that would be fantastic. So if you just know of a style she’d like…” Roman looked hopefully at him.

~ Roman

“If the design means something then she’ll love it. But…” Randy stared at his hands for a moment then back at him, “Come by my quarters, while Rand is on evening rounds. I might have something you’ll like.”

Randy

Roman nodded, normally he stayed in the lab for her evening rounds but he didn’t have to. He could easily make it to Randy’s quarters instead. “I’ll be there by 1710.” Roman leaned back in his chair, seeming more relaxed. “Thank you.”

~ Roman

Randy nodded, stood up and headed for the door. “Gonna get out before you have a reason to throw me out.” Randy’s normal laughter was oddly quiet when he left. Lost in speculation and introspection.

Roman grinned, “I was looking forward to throwing you out.” He said, and then Randy was gone. Roman spent a couple more minutes in his office, then returned to his lab to get his work done so he could be sure he could be there by then.

At 1710, Randy was already in his quarters. There was a bit black tea that Alden liked, Randy was always a good host. However Randy had a tumbler of whisky on the rocks. And from the scent it was the good stuff. He opened the door when Alden knocked. “Have a seat. Tea or something stronger?”

Randy

Roman knocked at 1710 precisely and stepped in when the door opened. He took a seat and shook his head. “Tea is fine. I don’t often drink, except the occasional Scottish coffee to sleep.” He said. “You had some ideas for the ring?” He asked, wanting to get right to it.

~ Roman

Randy didn’t drink either. He had the whisky for the Scottish coffee only. So it might strike Alden as odd that he was drinking it. “Well one, actually. Not sure it’s even something you would want.” Randy stood up from where he was leaning against the counter and made his way over to his bed. He opened a bedside drawer and then came back placing two velvet covered ring boxes in front of Alden. One black, one red.

The black contained to solid gold bands, nestled together. One a larger size and wider across..the other more delicate. On the outside of each, in Gaelic: Is ann le mo ghraid mise (l am my beloved’s)
On the inside of both: Agus is leamsa mo ghraidh, (And my beloved is mine).

The red box contained a platinum engagement ring. The band was woven to resemble a vine culminating in a rose. Set in the center rather than a diamond, was a Rose Beryl Morganite carved with the shape of rose petals. Randy swallowed once before speaking. “These were our grandparents. The bands have been in our family for…a long time. This one,” Randy tapped the red box, “Our grandfather had designed for our grandmother.”
