Roman didn’t see her the rest of the day, but that wasn’t that unusual to him. He saw her when she picked up the evening reports and then stayed in the lab until she came after her own shift. He had a vague idea what to do about his proposal but he still hadn’t decided when. It helped him to just focus on work for a little while.

Rand appeared after her rounds. She hesitated before entering the lab and felt foolish. Tucking her hands behind her back she walked in nodding to a couple of the officers and made her way over to the table where Roman was working. “Hi.”

Rand

“Miranda!” Roman stood when she spoke, having missed her come in. “Just a minute and I’ll clean up what I’m doing and we can get dinner,” he said, shuffling away the paperwork on his desk. “One of my officers finished a project, I’ve got all the final reports to go over.”

His exclamation didn’t go unnoticed, but no one said anything. They were used to seeing Rand meet the Cmdr at the end of her shift. They all knew they were dating, but the two had always been discreet about it. Rand blinked at him and then leaned, casually she hoped, against the table because her knees felt weak. At the same time she smiled turning slightly pink. She liked the way he said her full name, but he never did that…here. What was wrong with him? Rand wasn’t sure what to say and ended up with, “Do you need to stay?” If he did, that was fine with her. Work and service came first. That was part of the package when you signed up to serve Star Fleet.

Rand

Roman shook his head, finishing up cleaning his desk, and then stepped around it to leave. “No, I can finish tomorrow.” He glanced around the lab, and then headed for the door, expecting Rand to go with him.

What?? Now Rand was confused, he was going to put off work? Well…granted since the project review was done, Roman hadn’t been pushing himself quite so hard and it was paperwork waiting for him. She was worrying over nothing. She followed him out of the lab and into the corridor. “How was your shift?”

Rand

He headed for the galley for food, turning briefly to smile at her. “It was alright. Same as ever, I suppose. Yours?” It wasn’t the same as ever at all, not really. He’d spent the whole thing thinking about being married to her. Or how to marry her. One of the two, all day.

“Busy. New crew arrived today so I was busy with orientation tours. I like doing them though. We have a few more arriving in a couple of days. Security if I remember right. Straight out of the Academy.” Rand was right, she hardly ever forgot anything. She took a tray and looked at the selection. A choice between grilled Vulcan vegetables and classic cheeseburgers. Rand was not in a vegetarian mood that day. She took a plate and moved toward a table. “What was the project that finished?”

Rand

“A chemistry project. All that math and all those elements,” Roman swirled a finger in the air, “I could swear I can still see them going about my head.” He picked the cheeseburger as well. “New officers are always good,” he commented to her other statement.

Rand grinned, “Better you than me. It confuses me just trying to transcribe it for the reports.” Rand had a solid grasp of basic chemistry, what it was, how it worked, how to work equations, but the level the labs were working on was far above her. Maybe that’s what she should do? Look into learning more about chemistry? That was a thought for later though. “New officers are always good. Lt Anders will be busy with so many new officers.” Rand found an empty table and sat down. She still didn’t like being around so many people, but at this time of the evening the galley was less crowded than usual.

Rand

Roman smiled and shook his head. “Some days it confuses me. Chemistry is a very different field from biology.” He commented as he sat down with her. Then he nodded again. “He will. Two new recruits in a week. He’s got a lot to do, I’m sure.” He smiled at her as he took a bite of his burger.
