Rand had been busy setting things up for Rogers’ phaser training session. Of course the woman wanted her to participate. It wasn’t that Rand didn’t understand why and even agree, but it wasn’t a skill she had any experience at all about. So not only was she going to make a fool of herself in front of the captain, all the department heads would be there as well, and anyone else who wanted to attend. Rand didn’t like being ill prepared or looking incompetent, and the whole thing was spiking her anxiety through the bulkheads. She entered the lab at lunch and made her way quietly over to Nibbles’ cage. She flipped through then notes, not really reading them. Hands twisting in her lap as she watched Nibbles root around for the seeds she’d scattered in the thicker plants at the back of the enclosure. She supposed she could ask Roman or Randy to help her. But Randy hated phasers and would just spout off why they went against everything he believed in. But Roman was working and she would have to wait.
Rand
Roman was sitting at his desk, doing paperwork. He almost always noticed Rand come in for lunch, and today as he watched her go over to Nibbles, he could tell she was nervous about something. She didn’t say anything when she came in, and when she sat watching Nibbles he could tell by the way her arms were moving she was twisting her hands or something in her lap. He waited until the rest of the lab staff left to say something, and when they had, he said, “Rand? Is something going on?”

Rand looked around, knowing everyone was gone because Roman wouldn’t ask otherwise. She nodded, looking like someone had just stolen her puppy. “That phaser training…the one Rogers mandated…she…she wants me to…participate.” The last word came out like she was cursing someone rather than talking about a something so mundane as weapons proficiency. “I…I don’t know how.” Now her hands were behind her back, fingers hooked and twisted around each other. “Phaser training wasn’t a priority for yeoman.”
Rand
Roman smiled and shook his head, taking one of her hands. “It’ll be fine. After shift today I’ll show you the basics. You’ll impress Rogers with your skills. Alright?” He said. He was no security head but he had training with phasers and he was a good shot with them. He was confident he could teach her at least a little before she went to Rogers’ training.

She squeezed his hand when he took hers. “Alright…thank you.” Rand didn’t really care if she impressed Rogers. She had just told the woman that she knew which way to point it and that was it. She didn’t want Rogers thinking she was trying to surprise or impress her or full of ego or something. She just didn’t want to make a fool of herself.
That evening, after Rand’s last rounds she found Roman still working in the lab waiting for her, and then they made their way to the weapons room.
