Roman was grinning as he watched her take in what was on the table. Then she brought him the tray and he took a big bite of the grilled cheese as she walked away again. When came back, his smug, playful smile faded slightly. “Six?” His voice did that high pitched thing it did when he said it. “Are you trying to overhydrate me to death? You know that’s a thing, don’t you?”

Rand watched him take that big bite of the sandwich and resisted the urge to glare at the closet where the nightgown hung. She did appreciate the look on his face at the water though. “I do know, but I also know it will take more than 6 bottles of water to overhydrate a fully hydrated person. My track coach made us learn that.” She walked back over to the table and grabbed her own lunch, and grinned over her shoulder at him, “but you don’t have to drink it.” Then she sat down on her side of the bed and dunked her sandwich into the soup. Nope, he did not have to drink the water. She was totally fine with him not holding up his side of the deal.
Rand
All this time, and Rand still underestimated Roman’s stubborn streak. He finished off the sandwich and the soup, drinking the first water with his meal. Then he popped the top off another water and started guzzling that one too. He was reaching for the third when he looked over at her again and smiled playfully.

Rand absolutely was not understanding his stubborn streak. In fact she was counting on it. He would decide he was full and stubbornly insist that he had eaten enough, in fact eaten more than he had in weeks, and so had met his end of the deal. In fact he would get even more stubborn about not eating more when she insisted he hadn’t. She would be equally stubborn in not wearing that nightgown and that would be that. What she miscalculated was what Roman would be stubborn about.
He finished the food, and at first she was so relieved to see him eat, not nibble not poke at the food, she started to offer him hers. Just so he would keep eating. Then she remembered she was supposed to be eating as well, so he didn’t worry. And she really was hungry. She had just taken the last spoonful of her soup when Roman put down the first bottle and chugged the second one … Then he picked up the third and grinned at her. She started to cough and a bit of the soup was spit out she was so stunned. She coughed again, cleared her throat, and drank half her own water. “Not that I’m complaining, but maybe you should sip that water? Before you make your stomach cramp?” She really was concerned about it, but the red color in her cheeks was more than enough evidence to know she was stalling.
Rand
Roman set aside the empty plate from lunch, set aside the remaining three bottles, and chugged the one in his hand. His stomach was already starting to hurt, all that food and water after weeks of not eating or drinking properly. But he was not going to lose his side of the deal, so he wasn’t going to tell Rand. He set down the third empty bottle. “Three more, and I’ve still got the rest of the day.”
