Randy nodded. He always liked the goo lizard. He found her fascinating. He didn’t want to touch her or feed her treats or anything. Randy looked at him quizzically. Then he laced his fingers behind his head and leaned back, the chair balanced on the back legs, and grinned full of attitude. “I’m faaabulous. You’ll have to be more specific about ‘what did I do?’ I just fed your rabbit. Got my sister to sleep, food and water in your system. OH! I know…” he leaned forward so the front legs snapped to the floor, feet still on the corner of the bed, hands still laced behind his head, but a serious wicked gleam in his eyes. “I gave Rand my blessing when she moved in here with you, withOUT asking what your intentions are toward my sister, Mr Roman Alden of the Alden Estates.”Randy
“That’s not what I…” Randy’s next words made him stop and make a face. “How did you find out about that?” Apparently he’d forgotten letting it slip out earlier. “I’m not part of the Alden Estates.” His tone made it clear he didn’t like talking about it. There was maybe ¼ of the water left and Roman was dragging it out but at this rate he’d fall asleep before he finished it.

The grin slipped slightly, that concerned Randy. Alden could answer the questions but didn’t remember everything since he hit his head. Was it fatigue or was something else going on in his head? Or just a combination of both? And maybe the meds making him sleepy too? He dropped his feet to the floor grabbing his tricorder, keeping the smile in place. “Let’s see how your blood sugar levels are doing.” He took out the wand and did a full scan, including his head to make sure things weren’t getting worse. “And I found out about that because you told me. When I was assessing the severity of your concussion I asked you your full name. You reply was ‘Roman Alden of the Alden Estates, No middle name’.” Then he made an embarrassed face, “Oh where are my manners. My grandmother would have my ear. Randal Oyne Farquharson of Clan Farquharson. Third in line to be Chief.” And he gave a very formal but some how slightly irreverent bow. “Now that formalities are over.” He sat back down and pinned Roman with a stare, “What are your intentions with my sister?”
Randy
Roman tried to remember, coming up empty. The effort made his head feel foggy and the headache come back a little. It wasn’t something he’d ever say normally but then again, his head still didn’t feel clear. “I noticed at the dance. Your outfit. Classic wear of Scottish nobles. But I don’t belong to nobility, not anymore.” Another detail he wouldn’t normally share. Randy’s scans showed his blood sugar normalizing and his hydration rising. His head showed a little more swelling than had been on the first scan. Roman didn’t quite make eye contact with Randy, but he reached over and brushed his hand against Rand’s. “I don’t date casually. If you’re asking whether I intend to marry her, I’d say yes, someday when we’re both ready for that step.”
~ Roman
Randy made a rude noise, “Ge bith (whatever). Nobility really has nothing to do with name or dress or where you live, but by how one acts. And you Cmdr are one of the most noble people I’ve ever met.” Then he grinned, again, “but I do look good in my Scottish garb. Kilts are so…freeing.” Randy felt very awkward watching that moment. It was very tender, especially when you considered how Rand turned her hand over in her sleep to hold his. His sister had it baaaaaaad. He leaned back in his chair again, feet crossed and propped up. “Neither does she. I could tell you stories about her attempts at dating that would make you cringe. Rand wasn’t made for casual dating.” He glanced around Alden’s quarters; they were both very neat and organized. Someone who didn’t know Rand would think she didn’t live here because she made the effort to not disturb Alden’s space. That’s how Rand was, in everything, shy and hesitant. But there were small things, like her favorite insulated cup on the counter, the bottle of whisky on the table, the glimpse of her uniforms in the closet that wasn’t quite closed, the robe she just kicked to the floor in her sleep, and the sure sign she lived there - her kelpie. Though that was all Randy’s doing, and he didn’t regret it. How much more ‘ready’ did they need to be? That was going to be fun to watch. “I can’t wait to see her after you tell her that.” Randy was still her big brother, by 5 minutes, but still the big brother.
Roman yawned again, his eyes beginning to droop from tiredness. He gave a tired chuckle. “I have my own stories about my failures in casual dating.” Usually because Jay pushed him into it. But he pushed that thought away. He smiled a little, “She’ll be really happy but really anxious I’m sure.”
“That’s going to be the mantra of your life. You know that right?” Randy chuckled and Rand moved and he got really quiet. He didn’t want to wake her up. She would be happy and worry about every. single. tiny. thing.
“Rand told me you’re done with the cobra. You know she’s heart broken right?” Randy didn’t like the increased swelling, he’d have to check again to make sure it had stopped.
Randy
Roman nodded. “I don’t understand it, she’s terrified of him, but she will miss him. That’s partly why I chose to send him to…” He struggled to remember. Certain things like that were still escaping his memory, and the effort of trying to recall them seemed to make his head hurt. “a sanctuary.” He finished at last. He couldn’t remember which sanctuary. It would be on his PaDD.

“He’s predictable. He will always be a deadly predator, that will never change, and no matter how unnerving he will always lunge at her, bang his nose on the glass, rattle it, shake his nose of the sting, and then weave back and forth following her. He’s an animal, a dangerous one, but an animal. Rand loves animals even the dangerous ones. She says they make sense when people don’t. At least she doesn’t want to take him home and feed him. The stoat was bad enough.” Randy tugged his knee high boot down showing old but nasty scars down his calf. “That momma was furious.” Pipkin had finally wandered out of her cage and was making her way up the stool to the bed.
Randy
“It’s the unfortunate part of my job, having to get rid of them when I’m done with researching them.” Roman said. Then he pulled up his own sleeve to show a faint scar on his arm. “The babies can be nearly as hazardous as the parents sometimes.” He’d finished off the first bottle of water, now he lay back, laying on his side so he didn’t lay on the bump on his head. The movement of going from sitting to laying made him dizzy but he was getting so tired he could barely keep his eyes open. “So what did you do? I haven’t been able to sleep in over a week and now all the sudden my eyes won’t stay open…”
~ Roman
“I always found the babies are worse.” Randy stopped himself from turning it into a bragging match. As much fun as that might be, Alden was close to being out. “All I did was make it so you could eat. And I warned you yesterday that now that it was over, it would hit you hard. Now you have a decent snack in your system, that you body thinks is a meal because of how little you ate, it is full and happy. You have a decent amount of fluid back in your system. Now your body can take care of itself and heal. The body does that best when it sleeps, so you have an increase in melatonin production. And the pain relief quality of the medicine kicked in and with the sudden drop in pain you’ve got an adrenaline drop. It’s all making you tired.” Randy removed the empty bottle, found Rand’s communicator and set it and extra water on the nightstand. Then he picked Pipkin up and put her in his lab. So she was out of the way while both Alden and Rand settled to sleep.
Randy
Roman shrugged tiredly. “The project was done yesterday, and I was awake all night.” It felt like it took a lot of effort to speak clearly, just because he was so tired. He watched Randy move things around, replacing the empty bottle with fresh ones. It was something to focus on to stay awake long enough to hear Randy’s answer.
~ Roman
“You’re stubborn and for some reason have this insatiable need to prove me wrong.” Randy sighed looked at the ceiling and then back, but Alden was facing away from him, so…”but also, maybe, there is a small possibility I might have been to harsh in my words yesterday. And I am sorry for that. I did not want this to happen to you.”
