When he finished the yogurt, Randy twisted the cap and handed him a bottle of water. “Dehydration causes headaches as well. So if you can get this in you it will help as well.” Randy got up and found where Rand kept the water and placed a couple bottles on the bedside table. Easy reach so Roman didn’t have to get up. Then he scanned Rand again, he needed to know the sedative was working. Rand didn’t really need to be coddled, he was over doing it. His own kind of trauma and guilt. Their 18th birthday had changed him, and Alden being in her life was both reassuring and scary for him. Her readings were good and he fought the urge to tuck her in like she was a small child again.

Roman started to drink from the first water bottle. His stomach started to act up, though it was still much better than it had been before, so he kept drinking it, trying to make himself finish it.

Then he returned to his seat. Alden was yawning already, and Randy was relieved to see that. “Once you finish the water I’ll take another scan and make sure your blood sugar and hydration levels are good and then I’ll leave you alone for a bit.”

Randy

“Oh.” Roman didn’t want to be alone. He slowed down on the water bottle so it would take longer to drink. He wasn’t going to ask Randy to stay but he wanted him to, so if he was going to leave when the water was gone, Roman would just make drinking the water take longer.

Randy noticed how Alden suddenly slowed down his water intake. Randy knew him well enough to know it was an avoidance tactic. Whether to avoid ending something he was enjoying or to avoid doing something. Curious…he wanted to keep Randy there. Now if he was just avoiding being alone or actually wanted Randy to stay, Randy wasn’t sure. Randy the counselor knew that the last few weeks had left Alden unstable and in a bit worse condition. Just like he had told Alden, it would seemingly get worse before it got better. That was because he was being forced to think and deal with things that he’d spent the last 3 years avoiding and trying to act like it hadn’t happened. With the head injury making him slightly confused, it would be interesting to see what he could get out of Alden now. Randy though didn’t want to do that. He just wanted them both to get some sleep.

There was a soft scratching and Randy looked around, finding the sound. Pipkin had been sitting quietly in her cage but was scratching at the water bottle. Randy got up and went over and squatted down to eye level with her. “Thirsty?” She twitched her nose at him and he opened one of the side doors and removed the bottle before closing the door again. He refilled the bottle and replaced it. Running the back of one finger over and between Pipkin’s ears as she greedily lapped up the water. “She’s almost out of food, where do you keep it?”

Roman pointed out where the food was kept. “I must have forgotten to feed her this morning.” That wasn’t surprising. Even before he fell, he hadn’t been in the mood to do anything.

“Do you want me to leave the door open for her?”

“If you don’t, she’ll bang on the wall.” Roman said, and then he yawned again. Laying down seemed like a good idea… He drank more of his water.

Returning to his seat he propped his crossed feet on the corner of the bed. “So Scott was going on and on in the galley this morning about all the goo she had to clean last night. The Goo Lizard okay?”

Randy

“She’s fine… Shedding her skin. Like an Earth reptile.” Why was he so tired all of a sudden? Randy had said eating might cause sleepiness. But this felt more than a little after meal sleepies. “What did you do?” He asked, looking at Randy.
