Roman would never admit it, but Randy had earned his trust. All these months of seeing Randy and he was confident no one knew about it. And, another fact Roman would never admit aloud, it had been helping. There were several scientists who worked under him that Roman trusted professionally, none of them would he entrust his own project to. There was only one person that fit Roman’s description. It would almost be Randy, surely he would listen to him, but Roman wasn’t comfortable with him the way he was with Rand. It would have to be her. He nodded slowly. “Rand. She would do it for me.” Roman couldn’t think of a thing she wouldn’t do for him.~ Roman
“There is nothing she wouldn’t do for you.” Rand was just that kind of person, but it was saying a lot because she was extremely smart, connected and resourceful. “That will work out well. With her schedule being what it is, you will have a few breaks already throughout the day. Unless of course she takes her leave time. We’ve been out of the Academy a year now. She has a whole week built up.”
Randy
Roman shook his head. “She doesn’t need to waste her leave time babysitting me while I work.” He would already feel bad making her use all of her free time to do this. “I’ll ask her later today.” Then he looked at Randy for a long moment, like he was contemplating saying something. Finally, “You’ll… be available as well?”
~ Roman
Randy almost snorted. “Babysit? Hardly. It goads me to say it, but despite the activity I don’t think Rand could imagine a better way to spend her ‘vacation time’ than 24 hours a day for a full 7 days with you.” Randy waited while Alden seemed to be deciding something. “I will be. Just send Rand, everyone is used to her coming to see me. That’s assuming of course, she doesn’t kill me first.” Randy was grinning enough at the last part that Alden would get the impression that he thought the punishment was worth it. Randy was wise enough not to ask what happened after though.
Randy
Roman thought back to when he was on bed rest. Even after they’d let him move back to his quarters, Rand had spent any free time she could make with him. He couldn’t help but grin with Randy. “Oh she is most certainly going to kill you.” Roman could tell Randy thought it was worth it. It had definitely been worth it, he could agree.
~ Roman
Randy got up from the chair pointing at Roman’s grin and laughed. “And just think, you keeping her busy extends my life for a few days.” And with that he headed out the door, a moment later, “Randall faigh air ais an seo! (Randall get back here!)” And then Randy’s laughter and the sound of his foot steps said he was running. However there was no sound of a chase being given.
Randy
Randy exited and then Roman heard Rand shouting for him, and Randy’s footsteps receding down the hall. He did not hear Rand follow though, so he stood and stuck his head out the door. “Rand? A moment, please?” Then he went back into his office and sat down, waiting for her.
~ Roman
Rand had already turned around to go back to what she was doing. She was not chasing Randy, she knew where he slept. Then she heard Roman call her. Oh boy, was she in trouble? It was bad etiquette to yell down the corridor, very unprofessional. He didn’t quite have that tone of I’m still your boss. The one he used the last time Nibbles got attached to her. She was in trouble and knew it and so did he and everything was fine. She did a neat about face and walked back down to his office and entered the open door. Not sure how official the summons was, “Yes, Cmdr?”
Rand
Roman smiled and shook his head. “Nothing official.” He looked a bit nervous, like he was wanting to ask something but unsure how to phrase it. He nearly chickened out entirely. The words Nothing, nevermind suddenly seemed very convenient. But he’d already called her here, from down the hall. He wanted to continue to avoid it. To leave it alone. That would be easier.
Nothing official and Roman looked nervous and he called her in, in the middle of their shifts. That made her nervous and extremely curious. She moved in so the door would close and sat down.
No, he couldn’t do that. He needed to get it done. He took a deep breath. “I need your help… with my… the last project up for review.” He sort of half-pointed to the related data disks, still covered by a piece of blank paper.
~ Roman
She glanced at the paper she knew which disks were under there. She had never read them though, so she didn’t know the specifics. She looked back at him. Her answer was immediate. “Of course. What do you need me to do?” Rand would do all of it for him if she had the expertise.
