Roman spent the rest of his day doing anything but the last project. He hadn’t even looked at it yet. And that was why when 1700 rolled around he stayed in the lab, working. If he was ‘busy’ he didn’t have to do it yet. So he made himself busy. Rand wasn’t usually done until at least 1800 and Roman would rather be working than be alone.~ Roman
For whatever reason the reports arrived all electronically that evening. Normally Rand would have been thankful, and she was. However that meant she was stuck in her tiny office. Then after delivering the reports, she was back in her officer. She dozed off in her chair staring at the screen, before her headed nodded forward and jerked her awake. She ended up wedging the chair into the only other small space (next to the door, thank goodness it was a sliding door) in the room. She was standing up, bouncing from foot to foot, slightly bent forward to type. She wanted Scottish coffee, sans whiskey, warm pajamas and a pillow. Unless Roman couldn’t sleep, then she would stay up with him.
When she was finally done she had to wrestle the chair back into place. She stopped at Roman’s quarters to see if he had eaten yet, but he wasn’t there. Holding off on changing she headed to the lab. If she had to eat he had to try.
Rand
Roman was at his desk when she got there, still working on something. He had a data disk loaded into his computer terminal and his PaDD next to him and it looked like he was comparing data. It looked like he’d been there the last few hours, he was squinting a bit at the screen and as she walked in he stopped to rub his eyes like they were dry. Then he looked up and smiled when he saw her. “You’ve finished up for the day?”
~ Roman
When Rand walked in catching a glimpse of him rubbing at his eyes from staring at the screen for far too long an unexpected warmth spread through her. She loved him dearly, even when he was doing his obsessive scientist thing. She imagined she’d be chasing him out of his home made lab when they were old and grey and retired. The thought brought her up short and left her feeling…well she wasn’t sure how she felt. She smiled back at him and moved over to the table where he was working. “I am. What about you? You ready to stop and get dinner?”
Rand
“Oh, er, alright.” Roman gestured to the work in front of him. “This is busywork anyway,” he said and then he set his work aside, turned off the PaDD and stood, taking her hand. He wasn’t planning on eating but with all but the one project done and Rand off duty he’d rather spend the time with her. “Let’s go.”
~ Roman
The way Roman hesitated at first she thought maybe he wasn’t ready. He’d spent all week on those other projects, so he was probably behind on his work. But then he took her hand and walked with her to mess declaring his work as ‘busywork.’ The offerings were a very heavy chili or a lighter but filling pasta salad. Rand grabbed two of the pasta salad and then water and a tea. She didn’t want tea. She didn’t want to put the effort into making it. She turned to look at him, “Here or …” she almost said home. She was tired and being fanciful, “your quarters?” Roman might notice the circles that were starting to show as she stifled a yawn.
Rand
Roman followed her as she picked up their food. He didn’t mind the tea from the mess. It wasn’t as good as Rand’s, but it would do just fine. He looked down at her when she turned to talk to him. She looked tired. She paused before she said his quarters and he wondered what she was going to say instead. “My quarters. It’s quieter there.” Then she could rest. Looking at her, maybe she’d end up going to bed early.
~ Roman
Rand nodded and walked with him. She passed him the food to take after they got off the lift. She arrived a few minutes later, changed into comfortable clothes and her robe wrapped around her. She just didn’t feel like wearing her uniform all night. She sat down with the food after handing him his. She drank half the water, it was cold and woke her up a bit.
Rand
Roman took the food to his quarters and then changed out of his uniform before she got back. When she arrived, he was wearing a plain pajama t-shirt and a pair of soft shorts. He sat at the table and took his pasta when she handed it to him. Then he picked at the noodles, trying to convince himself to eat them.
~ Roman
Rand was tired which meant she wasn’t really worried about if she was supposed to say something or not. As always the food Chef prepared was delicious. She was ate slowly but she was eating. Roman was picking at the food, and her worry and exhaustion got the better of her. “Food on fork, open mouth, insert fork.” Her accent was thick and rich, she was smiling, teasing him slightly. “But I swear I wonna go ta sleep till ya eat, something.” Then she ruined the effect by not quite hiding a yawn behind her hand.
Rand
Roman looked up when she spoke. Her accent was thick and she was smiling and Roman smiled a little too. Then she added to her statement and his smile started to fade but as she yawned it turned into a grin. “I’m fairly certain I can outlast you.” Despite how little he’d been sleeping he didn’t feel like he was going to be able to. He wrapped some of the noodles around his fork, and then let them slip off back into his bowl.
~ Roman
“I am certain I am more stubborn than ye.” And another yawn escaped. Rand tried to glare at him as the food slipped off his fork, but she was simply too worried. “If ya donna eat, yer blood sugar will drop, while ya be in the lab. That’s dangerous.” She didn’t care how much he ate, just that he ate. “Do ya want me to get ya something else?”
Rand
Roman gave her a playful grin. “However stubborn you are, you look far too tired to keep it up.” He wrapped noodles around his fork again, inside the bowl, swirling them. The food smelled good, anything Chef made did. But the idea of taking a bite seemed about as appetizing as one of Mushu’s largest flies. “No, no. The pasta looks lovely.”
~ Roman
Rand ate quietly, waiting for him to eat. When she was finished and he hadn’t even started, Rand got up. She placed her dishes on the tray, and clenched her teeth slightly to keep from yawning. She rolled her shoulders slightly and made her way over to the small counter, and with slow, methodical movements began heating water for tea. It wasn’t the chamomile or citrus tea she took out, but the strong caffeine heavy black tea that Roman was partial to.
Rand
The noodles were getting cold, and Roman felt bad that they might go to waste, but he still hadn’t taken a bite of it. He looked up at Rand and watched her put the kettle on for tea. Then he saw which packets she grabbed and he stood and went over to the counter next to her. “That’s the morning tea. You need the chamomeal tea.” He hadn’t thought she was that tired, the packets looked completely different. His high caffeine black tea was in black packets with silver writing. The chamomeal was in a white packet with flowers on it and purple writing. And the citrus tea packet was also white, with black writing and a picture of a lemon on it.
