Soon they were ready to go, and Randy sent Rand away. Roman understood why. Watching him, especially if it didn’t go well, would be distressing to her. Roman was balanced on the crutches and ready to go. He nodded to Elbbirt. “I am.”The walk was far from incident free. The pain made it difficult to focus on balancing on the crutches like he’d practiced with Randy. He kept jamming his foot into the floor. He’d narrowly avoided falling over. Each incident made the pain worse. When they got to the lift, he leaned on the wall while they waited for it.

Elbbirt went with them, once they were on deck 3 half way to his quarters Elbbirt almost made Alden stop. He was going to fall again if he didn’t slow down. Then he seemed to catch himself, without landing on his foot this time. Finally they made it to the door. Apparently Rand was in her office because she appeared from across the corridor and she appeared at his side. Between Randy, Elbbirt, Rand, and Roman his quarters were crowded. Along with the pain he was in he didn’t notice the surprise in his quarters. They got him settled and Randy and Elbbirt were leaving. Rand looked from Roman to Randy to Elbbirt and stopped Randy. “When does he get more?” Randy patted her shoulder, “I’ll be back when it’s time.” Then they left.
There were too many people fussing over him and it made Roman uncomfortable. Each time he nearly fell two or three sets of hands reached for him. His leg hurt and he was grouchy, and this close to telling everyone to back off when Rand appeared out of her little office. He did not notice what was different about his quarters between way too many people trying to help settle him in on his bunk and the throbbing, tearing pain in his leg worsened by the disastrous and long walk to deck 3. The quarters was larger than a junior officer’s but still really only made for one person. Four was a crowd. Soon he was settled though, and Randy and Elbbirt headed for the door.
Rand sat down in a chair next to him and placed the cold compresses on his leg. She fussed over him being very careful, but trying to make him feel more comfortable. Finally she couldn’t stand it anymore, “I might have something that will make you feel better.”
Rand
Finally everyone else was gone and it was just Rand fussing over him, covering his leg with a compress and messing with his pillows and blankets, trying to make him more comfortable. “Really, Miranda. I’ll be fine.” He said at last. The cold from the compress was helping a little, at least. He looked at Rand questioningly. She looked excited. “What is it?”

Rand sat back and looked at him, “Yes you will be, in a few days. But you decided to use the…crutches,” he would get the correct impression she stopped herself from swearing. “I’m going to fuss, deal with it.” Then she kissed him. She got up and walked over to the far side of his bed where there now was a wall to wall floor almost to the ceiling, multi-leveled cage. Rand kneeled down and opened a door cooing softly. She came back to her chair, but before she sat she placed a white and bright orange ball of bunny fir against his chest. She waited till he had a hold of her and then stepped back and sat down. “She’s very friendly and curious. She got here yesterday.”
Rand
Roman smiled sheepishly as Rand paused, clearly biting back a less than pleasant word to describe his choice of mobility assistance. “Did you really expect me to let them push me around in a wheelchair like my legs don’t work?” He asked. Then she told him to deal with it and he mock pouted before she kissed him. Then she headed to the far side of the room and he craned his neck to see, a little too reclined to see well at that angle. There was something against the wall. Or more accurately, something making up a new wall. An animal enclosure.
Rand shook her head, “No, I didn’t, but I could hope.”
Rand kneeled at the enclosure’s door for a moment, and then came back next to him, placing something small and soft and warm and squirmy in his arms, against his chest. The bunny was white and orange and by the looks of her, still pretty young. Once he had a good hold of the little bunny, Rand sat down in her chair. “She’s adorable! Where did you come from?” He asked, carefully stroking the little bunny, talking to her with an embarrasingly high pitched ‘animals and young children only’ voice. “When did you have time to do all this? And what’s her name?” Roman asked Rand, unable to keep from smiling.

Rand grinned, “She came from Deneva colony. Chief Helpful helped me find her. She doesn’t have a name yet and she’s about 6 months old.” Rand suppressed a small chuckle at the way he was acting and his voice. It was almost too much. But they obviously liked each other. The rabbit was eagerly stretching up and to the side to sniff at anything with in reach. Rand got up again and came back with a small container. “Apparently she really likes these.” Written across the top was ‘favorite’. She popped open the lid and handed Roman something that looked like a dried yogurt bite. “She was supposed to be for your birthday, but she arrived early.”
Rand
Roman was fawning over the rabbit, not listening to Rand as much as maybe he could have been, cooing at the rabbit and talking to her in the same high pitched voice. He looked up when Rand brought over the little container marked favorite, and took the treat when she handed it to him. Then he offered it to the bunny. That was right, his birthday was in about a week, wasn’t it? Roman had honestly forgotten. “There’s nothing better I could’ve asked for,” he said to Rand. “What should we name her?”
