[snip]A check on sensors did indeed show that the system from before was just ahead, that they had indeed dropped from warp and were by sensor scans at the border of the system’s solar wake. The fifth planet they though they had seen earlier wasn’t there, just a reflection off some stellar gases it seems. But yet if they dropped the view screen to peer out visually with the naked eye the system was utterly lacking in evidence, just swirling murky orange-green-grey tones of the Abyss. Yet another check on travel time did show they had moved at warp and were obviously deep in the abyss, but concerning on sensors too was their own warp trail died off about 1,000 meters aft of where they had come from!
Could it be they somehow were.....lost?

E’usah heard the comment on the comm and quickly checked the Nav computer and then checked her plot calculations for the third time. She turned toward the command chair behind her. “Ma’am the Nav computer shows we were exactly on course and speed, and my plot was spot on, we should be right where we are supposed to be.” E’usah had no explanation for the oddity that had just occurred. Her world was one of absolutes, 1 + 1 = 2, always, there was no room for maybe or pretty close, she unscrewed the cap off the thermos of mint tea, and for once wished that it held something a bit stronger, maybe.

Quinn began quietly but thoroughly checking her station, looking for any possible chance of mistakes from herself or E’usah. She find anything obvious, so she went back with a fine tooth comb. The only thing she could think of was that, perhaps, the planetary system they were looking for might not actually exist? It could have been some kind of sensor ghost? Then again, she wasn’t an expert in that kind of science stuff, and her idea could be just plain boloney. So she didn’t say anything.

Shirly softy tapped her fingers along the arm of her chair as she was contemplating her next move in the situation at hand. After a few moments of thought, she glanced up at her first officer, “Number One, I want you to work with Ensign Sweeney on what the scientific cause of all of this could potentially be.” Her eyes then darted to Quinn, “Full stop Ensign Dagget. It would seem that we have to put our journey on ice for the time being and formulate a plan. Put the Sentinel in park.” A slight grin came across her face after that comment and then looked to E’usah, “Ensign E’usah, run through your navigational coordinates a second time while we await the science team’s analysis. Perhaps a mistake was made and if so, it happens from time to time. There is nothing to be ashamed of, but I am sure you were correct from a navigational standpoint. I would definitely bet on you at the casino.” This served as a reference from her past history of growing up in the Las Vegas area prior to joining Starfleet.

E’usah glanced at Quinn then grabbed her PaDD and connected it to the Nav computer, she began running a diagnostic program, entering variables to see what the Nav computer would do. It should automatically detect any errors and make the necessary corrections, while informing the Navigator of the error. The Nav computer performed as advertised and always made the corrections which it announced with a small “chirp” and a blinking yellow icon on the nav panel. E’usah took a sip of her tea and entered her original plot and way points and the computer came up with the same course they had followed up until now, then she did it all again with the same results. She would wait and see if the science dept. came up with anything that would explain what had happened.

“Sensors are still showing the system, Captain, by my calculations we should be just at the edge of it. It seems the fifth planet was a reflection, but I have no explanation for the difference between the scanner results and… what’s there.” Or, what wasn’t there, anyway. A fault with the sensors would be Roman’s first guess. “Perhaps we should run a diagnostic scan of the ship’s sensor system?” He glanced one more time at the scans, and then the view screen. “Another concerning piece of information, our warp trail died a thousand meters away from where we came.” He was quite frankly just as lost as the rest of the crew.

“Maybe it’s cloaked,” Quinn joked, remembering how certain Klingon vessels had the capacity to hide their existence. Her dad’s ship had a small cloaking device. It hadn’t been operational when she left though. It’d be really silly to think that a whole planet was cloaked, but anything was possible in this weird world.

OOC: Crap! Has it really been 11 days since I last posted on here?!? ARGH so sorry!
For everyone doing checks and rechecks everything kept coming back in the green. No system faults seemed to be detected. They had moved, they had traveled, and they were in place where they should be. It more so seemed like everything else in the universe was out of kilter! Whether this system was there or not, was there but in some kind of phase, or cloaked they couldn’t say. They equally couldn’t say how their warp trail just poofed without reason nor what caused it. It truly was a great mystery.
The big problem now was what could they trust? Was their visual sighting at fault? Were their sensors? Were both??? If they couldn’t trust which was truth and which was fiction how could they move? Whether forward or back or whatever, who could say if they would plow right into something they could see or couldn’t see!! Truly the Abyss was a horrible terrible no good place.
As if the universe was just going to throw more nonsense and misery their way sensors beeped again by the science console. Ahead within the system, assuming it WAS there that is, sensors reported a low level warp pulse had just been picked up from the third planet along the northern hemisphere. The pulse barely registered as warp 1, but it SEEMS someone or something had just broken for about 3 seconds at least the warp barrier. Sensors though were unhelpful in plotting what had caused the pulse, other then pinpointing that it was ON the planet not in orbit or such.

Upon hearing the beep of the sensor, Roman turned back to the screen. “Detecting a warp pulse, Captain. Low level, but someone’s definitely broken the warp barrier for just couple seconds.” He paused as he continued reading the sensor readings. “It came from on the planet, near the northern hemisphere, not above it.”

Rand was standing off to the side, in her usual spot watching everyone run checks and diagnostics and she kept looking out at the screen. She should probably go inform the galley that they might be lost and unable to find their way out for a bit and go to emergency rationing. Better to start now than when things got really bad. Today was already prepped and cooked though so she could wait till she was dismissed. Something was niggling at her mind though, but she hesitated to say anything. She was a yeoman after all and what did she know about space anomalies and ship’s sensors? However it was her job to support that captain. Rand wasn’t sure it was a valid point or not....after a few moments of arguing with herself, Rand quietly appeared next to Rogers’ chair, and in a very quiet voice, “Captain? Could…it be possible that the strobe-like effect that Dr Haadok mentioned is acting like…one of those old decoder messages in kids comics? Where you need those special red colored glasses to see the image? Could applying a filter to the view screen allow us to see what’s there?” She was probably so totally wrong, and it was probably an idiotic idea, but Dr. Haadok did say the crew might need UV-Vis filters.

E’usah disconnected her PaDD from the Nav console and looked at the calculations once again. Shaking her head she turned her chair toward the command seats just behind her. “Captain, I’ve checked everything a dozen times, everything is as it should be. No errors or burps or hiccups at all, and by the way, they won’t let me in any of the casinos, I can’t help it I memorize all the cards played, I extrapolate odds on dice and other games of chance, I can even predict the probability of scoring on a slot machine after watching a spin or two. I’m banned from all gambling establishments, I couldn’t even get my fellow cadets to play poker with me after they had lost several times. Any way ma’am we’re exactly where we’re supposed to be.” E’usah realized that she had been rambling and quickly turned her chair back around, slightly embarrassed.
