Posted by… suppressed (3) by the Post Ghost! 👻The day proceeded fairly normally. Rand was up early as always, her hand better but still hurting. Randy had looked at it, chastised her about doing too much, and then had some inventive ideas about what to do with the prankster. Luckily the reports were not as extensive as they had been. The morning moved smoothly and Roman supervised her time with Nibbles. She still couldn’t find the sleeve remnant. She finally figured it must have been tossed out when the cage was cleaned last.
But as her afternoon moved on she found it was moving faster than she wanted and she was making work, trying to postpone the inevitable. Randy found her and reminded her, but he had his own duties to perform and would check on her later. At 1545 Rand was wondering everywhere but deck 9 and Sickbay until she resigned herself to having to go for her appt. and she took the lift and stepped off on the far side of deck 9.

The day went quickly for Roman as well. Unlike usual, he slept all the way until his alarm went off, which was quite a nice way to start the day, though he’d planned on using the extra time so he could be done by 1600. He made his way down to Deck 9, where he worked in his office instead of the lab, to minimise distractions.
While he was supervising Rand’s visit with Nibbles, he worked in the lab. Then it was back in his office until he was finished with paperwork at 1400. Two hours to do his usual science stuff. He fed the animals only he was allowed to feed, and did his necessary work only. Finally he was done by 1605 and by 1610 he was in Sickbay, looking for Rand.

Rand had arrived only a moment before and was getting a stern but deserved lecture about arriving on time for her appointment from Nurse Shrine. Additionally the nurse was not buying Rand’s appology that she was busy and that’s why she was late. Rand was never late. The nurse shook her head. “Up on the bed and get that boot off. Dr Elbbirt will be by in a moment to take x-rays.”
Rand
Roman waited for Rand to finish getting a rather stern sounding lecture from one of the nurses, hoping no other nurses saw him. Or at least, didn’t talk to him. Then he headed to Rand. “I take it I am no later than you are?” He said, glancing around as if uncomfortable. But he was clearly trying to hide it.

Rand was happy to see him. He’d said he’d come if he could, but she was conflicted. As much as she wanted him there with her, she knew he hated it. When he wasn’t there when she arrived late, she’d half hoped he was busy in the labs and half disappointed. She nodded looking up at him from where she was sitting. “I was…busy.” She pointed subtly to the door, he could leave it was too hard, it was okay with her.
A small shake of his head was meant to tell her he wasn’t going anywhere. Roman had said he’d be here and he was too stubborn to back out now.
“Ah! En Farquharson let’s get started.” Dr Elbbirt entered the room with the portable x-ray machine and got right to work. He glanced up, “Lt Cmdr Alden. Making sure she doesn’t fall and break her other foot?” Elbbirt was quite serious; Rand’s penchant for being ‘clumsy’ wasn’t lost on the medical staff. At least this time it didn’t hurt as he moved her foot this way and that to get the x-rays.
Rand
“Ensign Farquharson may not report directly to me, however, she does make a habit of helping with my paperwork. I would rather her with two functional feet,” said Roman to Elbbirt. It may not have been the strongest excuse but there was no reason for his words to be doubted. He stood quietly, resisting the urge to reach for Rand’s hand while the x-rays were taken.

Elbbirt nodded. He applauded Alden. The crew and personnel fell under his jurisdiction, and he thought it was well done that Alden was concerned over the health of the crew. Of course it wasn’t like Alden was coming in and checking on other crew. Then again, Alden was the one who’d found Rand and helped her to sickbay. Perhaps he felt obligated to see it through. Shrine on the other hand had heard all those annoying questions Scott had asked every time she came in to see Rand. Now she was starting to wonder.
Elbbirt looked over the images, “You stay right there, I’ll be right back,” and he left taking Shrine with him. They returned, Shrine with a hypo and Elbbirt with the bone fuser. Rand sat up straighter and scooted backwards, her eyes going wide. Nope, no more hypos no more bone fuser. “It’s healed up very well, but there are still a few very small weak spots. So we’re going to take care of those.” While Elbbirt set up his torture device, Rand tucked her foot under her opposite knee and placed her hand on her shin. “Dr Elbbirt, you know I get to read all the reports from the different departments, and there was one from planetary sciences. It mentioned bacteria, and I was just curious. It lives in a different environment than we do, how would you go about safely testing its effects on humans?” Rand was totally trying to distract him from what he thought he was going to do to her foot.
Rand
Elbbirt paused in setting up the machine, “Well of course we would have to set up a special environment for it, so it didn’t die. Bio hazard suits of course. We could use blood and tissue samples…” He was gearing himself up for a wonderful lecture. It wasn’t often that other members of the crew were interested in the research side of medicine and he was happy to share. Rand was such a nice young girl.
Roman had to hide his smile. She was trying to get him to talk instead of fix the foot. “Come on, R- er, Ensign, rip the bandaid off, as they say, and it’ll be done with.” He had his hand conveniently close, so she could grab it if she needed to, but in a subtle way so it might look like she just grabbed on to whatever was nearest and it happened to be his hand.

Elbbirt was talking away and Rand was clearly happy about it. All she had to do was let him talk long enough and she’d just get up, thank him for taking the time to tell her about it and walk out the door. Shrine however wasn’t falling for it. She remembered all too clearly Rand’s stubbornness and uncooperative behavior. She was contemplating a tug of war with the young Yeoman when Alden spoke up. Shrine paused…’Rand’? Really now? How interesting. Maybe Scott wasn’t so crazy. Elbbirt stopped talking and chuckled to himself. It was a good ploy but what was more telling was that Alden called Rand out on it, and of course the absolute horrified and betrayed look on Rand’s face that the Cmdr had called her out.
Roman felt a little guilty, after all it wasn’t like he was the world’s best patient, either. But it had to get done, he assumed, or they wouldn’t suggest doing it in the first place.
Rand looked up at him - how could he? He was supposed to be on her side. She hated this machine and she would rather miss running for a year than have to go through that again. Well maybe not - she’d miss out on morning runs with Roman. Shrine took advantage of Rand’s distraction to give her the hypo and then grab her leg and straighten it. She and Elbbirt shared a knowing smirk. They were on duty so it was kind of like he’d given her an order and she couldn’t refuse…could she? She couldn’t be that cowardly in front of him. “I can’t…I’ll…I’ll come back. I have reports due in two hours.” She scooted back away from the machine. She had to keep her foot still for 3 to 4 hours after each session. She had work to do.
Rand
“The captain will understand your lateness-” he almost said ‘Rand’ again, or worse, ‘Miranda’ but this time he caught himself first. “She knew about your appointment, and she’ll know why you’re late.” He could recognize his own excuse making behaviour in the way she insisted the due reports were more important than her treatment. But he wasn’t going to tell anyone else that, least of all Rand. Judging by how she looked at him, he was ‘in trouble’ already for ruining her plan to distract the doctor.

Elbbirt nodded, “The Cmdr is quite right, Ensign. We made due for a whole week, we’ll make due for a night. Rogers is very serious about the health of her crew. Now put your foot over here and let’s get started.”
Rand wasn’t horribly upset with Roman, not really. Well maybe just a bit. But Rand knew if it was him, she couldn’t exactly order him to go to sickbay but she’d try. She looked away from him and down at a spot on the bed in front of her. She was going to be sick or cry, probably both. It had absolutely nothing to do with Roman or the fact that Shrine and Elbbirt were looking like they knew more than they should. It had everything to do with that machine and how much it hurt. To the point the pain made her sick. She was stubborn though, gripping the edge of the bed, until Elbbirt turned it on. Then she squeezed her eyes shut, biting her tongue to keep from crying, and then grabbed hold of his hand.
Rand
She grabbed Roman’s hand, and he let her squeeze it all she needed, though he watched the medical staff, hoping they were too focused on their jobs to notice that they were holding hands. He knew coming would probably start the gossip mill, and he’d prepared himself for that, but now, it made him more uncomfortable than he’d like to admit. Then again, maybe it was just being in Sickbay at all that made him feel so uncomfortable.

If Rand was really thinking about it, this would not be how she’d have the ship find out. But then again, maybe it was the best way? Better the med staff than Scott. At the moment though all Rand was worried about was making it through this last unexpected round with the fuser. Finally she heard Elbbirt turn the machine off. “Alright, Ensign why don’t you lay back.” Rand shook her head, if she did she was going to be sick. She just wanted to stay right there and breath. Recognizing the signs of nausea he ordered Shrine to give her a low dose of Zofran, which she refused, saying it would pass on it’s own. And it would, but Zofran also had the nasty side affect of putting people to sleep and Rand was NOT staying in sickbay over night. They propped the bed up for when she felt she could sit back.
“Alright Ensign. You can start running again in the morning, BUT only a quarter deck at a time and no more than 2 laps the first 3 days. And wrap that ankle securely before you do.” Rand nodded she’d remember. She was still holding onto Roman’s hand when the doctor and nurse left.
Rand
Roman was happy to hear she was clear to run, and assuming he was going with her, he’d hold her to the limits the doctor set. And he understood refusing the medication, he would too. When they finally left, Rand was still holding his hand. “There, see, you’re done. Now you don’t have to think about it anymore.” That was always the hardest part for him, with physicals anyway, the looking ahead to it. He hadn’t actually had to stay in Sickbay in the last three years.
