Roman thought about the question a moment and then shrugged. “Now we’re getting more into medical sciences and I’m not really sure how exactly it works.” He said, looking at her. He was never afraid to say “I don’t know” or “I can’t answer that” to one of her questions if it was outside his field of knowledge. But in contrast to earlier, he now seemed a bit disinterested in talking about work, which was uncommon for him, but he was looking at her and instead of thinking about bacteria and illness and strange alien planets his mind had wandered to earlier in the day, in Rand’s little tiny closet when they were alone, and holding hands, and hugging.

~ Roman

Well, that made sense. It was a passing curiosity. She grinned, “Maybe I could ask in sickbay tomorrow. Make them forget why I’m there.” She looked over at him, sharing her amusement. That wouldn’t get her out of the appointment but she figured he would understand. But he was looking at her funny. It made her feel hot, and flush, and her stomach feel funny. She picked up her water, drinking about half of it very quickly. He was looking at her like he had in her office earlier, when he’d sort of admitted he loved her…

Rand

“I would, I’m quite interested in the answer myself,” Roman said, though he still sounded just about the opposite of interested. All he could think of was Rand, from earlier, saying “I do, too”. And the hugging. He loved the hugging. He was still giving her that look, but he wasn’t saying anything. Until what he was thinking made its way out his mouth before he realized what he was saying once again: “Miranda… I really do love you.” But this time, he didn’t feel or look nervous after saying it.

~ Roman

Rand turned a very nervously happy but lovely shade of pink. He was still staring at her, and it made her feel breathless. Then he spoke and that cocky, confident look was on his face again. The one that made butterflies in her stomach, and made her want to stand closer to him and hug him. She sat there silently, pleasantly surprised for several moments before she realized she hadn’t said anything. Her voice was quiet but sincere, “I love you, too, Roman.” It felt a little off telling him that while sitting next to him rather than standing close, next to him, his arms around her or holding her hand.

Rand

That was easily, and quickly, remedied, as Roman crossed the short space between them and wrapped his arms around her, loosely at first, bringing her into another hug. He’d thought it enough times this evening, but he had to again: he loved the hugging. “Oh, you do, do you?” He asked, voice soft and just above a whisper, giving her another look, something between his cocky confident one and the one he’d worn when he’d told her that in her office. It clearly wasn’t a serious question, he was teasing again.

~ Roman

Roman’s arms were warm and steady, and although her stomach felt all kinds of funny with the growing seriousness of their relationship, there was no painful anxious sparks making her feel sick or want to run. Instead, Rand put her arms around his neck, stepping closer, before she thought about it too much and chickened out. Rand loved the way Roman hugged her and being able to hug him back; they just seemed to fit together. She smiled, shyly, up at him flushing a deeper shade of red, not just because of his question, but the way he was looking at her and teasing her. Her voice was just as soft and confident as his, “Yeah, I do.”

Rand

Rand stepped closer to him, her arms around his neck, and Roman tightened his arms around her, making it a closer hug. He liked when she flushed, her face turning deep red. It was as if the color of her face was betraying how much she liked him. Her words made him smile, he seemed happy in a way he generally didn’t. Despite his normal confidence and stoicism, ‘happy’ was something more or less no one would normally describe him as. He wasn’t sure where he got the idea from, they hadn’t done it yet, but he was going for a kiss, moving slowly so Rand could stop him if she wasn’t ready or comfortable with that.

~ Roman

He looked…different - happy. Like everything that weighed on him was gone for just a moment. Did she make him happy, telling him she loved him? That was a humbling thought, that after everything Roman had been through, she made him happy. Roman tightened his arms around her, pulling her close enough she had to tilt her head up to look at him. Her eyes widened slightly as he leaned in closer and then her heart started pounding when she realized he was going to kiss her. Rand had no idea if she was ready for him to kiss her or not, but she was comfortable with it. Then she found herself leaning towards him.

Rand

It was definitely Rand that made him happy, both because it was her, and she just did, and because it gave him something positive to to focus on and look forward to. She leaned towards him as he was leaning towards her and then they were kissing, and that made Roman happy too, it was one of those moments he wished didn’t have to end.

~ Roman

Rand felt warm and beyond breathless. The way Roman kissed her made light headed and a little dizzy and it was a good thing he was holding her tightly. She might have seemed cautious but not hesitant at all. Rand didn’t want the moment to end. It seemed a perfect moment, calm and exciting at the same time.

=O=Yeoman Rand report to Captain Rogers immediately.=O=

Rand

The voice coming through the communicator made Roman jump slightly, ending the kiss. After all the nights and evenings they’d spent either just talking or having dinner, or whatever else, never had anyone needed Rand beyond duty hours, not while they happened to be together anyway. He was beyond disappointed. “You’d better go,” he said, not hiding his disappointment in his voice.

~ Roman

Rand jumped slightly at the voice intruding in such a private moment. The voice was NE Jenkins on the bridge. Rogers never called after her shift if it wasn’t important. Rand looked up at him, disappointment all over her face. “Yeah..” she kissed his cheek, and then walked over to the comm panel and hit the button. =O=On my way.=O=

She turned to look back at him, uncertainty and shyness, “I…I can come back, after if ..if you want.”

Rand

Roman nodded, almost eagerly. “Whenever you’re done, I’ll still be here,” he said. He’d known she could get called away for work but it hadn’t happened yet and he really hadn’t thought about it in a while. But somehow it had been what he felt was the worst possible moment for her to get called away to work.

~ Roman

Rand nodded and then slipped out the door. To say she was disappointed and flustered, would not adequately describe her. Rand already planned to being tea back with her. Why tonight? It was part of her job, but the timing…The call came from the bridge so she stopped to change back into her uniform, PaDD and tricorder in hand. Then reported to the bridge.

An hour and a half later, quick angry booted foot step came down corridor. Close to jogging, which she shouldn’t be doing until cleared by medical. Muttered Gaelic could be heard in the quiet, then the door to her office opened. She set the PaDD and tricorder down - Firmly. Rand did not throw or slam things, but she was tempted. She wanted to punch something. But that wasn’t her either…run…she was going running. And with that thought she shut and locked the door to her office. There was no way she could go back to see Roman like this. Her Scottish temperament was getting away from her.

Rand

Roman waited for her. The abrupt end of the hug, and the kiss, left him feeling cold in a way, and he couldn’t wait for her to get back. But a half hour went by, and she was still gone, so he picked up his PaDD and started reading his book again. Soon another hour had passed, and she still wasn’t back. He was beginning to wonder if she’d be back at all, whatever the captain needed must have been important for it to take this long…

~ Roman

The quick staccato of her boots on the floor sounded harsh and echoed back to her in the empty corridor as she headed back to her quarters. She really needed to be quiet, she’d already disturbed Rogers once tonight. She paused as she passed Roman’s door. There was no way anyone knew where she’d been when she’d been called away, right??

Coming back out, dressed to run she pac d back and forth passing his door several times. At this hour there was nowhere to run. Not that she should be running anyway.

Rand

Footsteps passed his door multiple times, missed at first because he was reading, but then they paused, just outside his door. Then there were some moments of silence, and then it sounded as though someone were pacing. Had Rand come back? Was something making her not want to come back? An irrational part of him wondered if Rogers had somehow found out about them. But there was no way. He went to the door, letting it open, and peered out, still dressed as he had been for their date. Rand looked as though she was ready to go running. “Rand? What are you doing?”

~ Roman

Rand looked angry, pacing the hall, hands fisted at her hips, muttering unpleasant curses in Gaelic. Hearing his voice she turned, and even though her stance was angry she relaxed some and smiled at him. The thought that she just really needed a hug came to her. But not in the corridor and she walked right into his room and let the door shut. “I’m really angry and dinner was amazing and I didn’t want to come back angry, that’s not going to help either of us sleep, so I’m going running but that just means I’m gone longer and that makes me more angry and disappointed.”

Rand

As soon as the door shut behind her, she got the hug she felt she needed, because to Roman it looked like she could use one, too. Like before she’d had to leave, he put his arms around her and hugged her tightly. That she said dinner was amazing was good at least, that made him happy. “What happened with the Captain?” He asked. She was obviously angry. And she knew she couldn’t run until medical cleared her tomorrow. But he didn’t bring that up, at least not yet.
