She grinned Juliet’s line coming instantly to her lips, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name, Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.” Her eyes went a little wide and looked away flushed, biting her lip. Though the quote was accurate in context to his joke, the line was far more serious than appropriate to their situation…right or not? She wasn’t sure and nervousness brought another quote right on the heels of it, “O thou teach me how I should forget to think.” That’s how she felt, being this close to him made her muddle headed and she said things maybe she shouldn’t. But despite nervous she couldn’t bring herself to move away from him.

It took Roman longer to come up with the next line that felt applicable to play along with, but he recalled it in the end: “I take thee at thy word. Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized. Henceforth I never will be Romeo.” If it was too serious, Roman did not seem to notice or mind. In fact, he seemed to like it, because he hugged her a little tighter as he spoke, the line a little jolty as he tried to remember it word for word.

Rand gasped very softly, totally enraptured by the moment. She leaned in closer as he hugged her tighter and looked up at him. The line that came to mind was out of order, but…”So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, Retain that dear perfection which he owes, Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name, which is no part of thee, Take all myself.” Why was it so easy to say when reciting lines, but not find her own words? The inability to know what to say was anxiety inducing and frustrating.

“My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself / Because it is an enemy to thee. / Had I it written, I would tear the word.” It wasn’t the next line because he’d already used it, but it was shortly after. Roman heard her gasp, but she leaned in closer so he was sure she was comfortable. He wasn’t sure he knew what came after that, he was recalling lines from English class, or from re reading the Shakespearean plays for fun. But he was enjoying the moment.

Rand hesitated. The next lines were all about how their families hated each other and what would happen if he was found. And despite Randy’s over protectiveness, it wouldn’t come to that. But after that…oh after that, Juliet begs Romeo to tell her how he feels, does he love her. She worries and rambles that her own declaration may have made him not live her. That she should have done or said so many other things. But she was enjoying the exchange and the line came out before she could have thought better of it. “Dost thou love me? I know thou wilt say “ay,” And I will take thy word. Yet if thou swear’st Thou mayst prove false. At lovers’ perjuries, They say, Jove laughs. O gentle Romeo, If thou dost love, pronounce it faithfully. Or if thou think’st I am too quickly won, I’ll frown and be perverse and say thee nay.”

Roman couldn’t remember what exactly happened next in the play, what Romeo actually said. He recalled something about Juliet telling him actually not to swear it. He couldn’t think of a quote which stated what he wanted to, though he didn’t want to stop. Finally he said, somewhat unceremoniously before he could stop himself, “I do.”
