Roman smiled and shrugged. Rand always liked his science explanations, he didn’t at all think she wasn’t interested. “It’s alright.” He said, and then he finished the explanation about how terraforming planets work, and how he’d heard the Caldos terraforming was supposed to work to make the planet resemble Earth’s United Kingdom’s climate.~ Roman
Rand listened and at the end just shook her head a bit bemused. She understood his explanation, she couldn’t do it but she understood it. “How do people come up with these ideas? I understand how they go about proving it and perfecting it, but to come up with the basis and initial procedure… it’s mind boggling. For me anyway.” Such amazing minds to come up with how to make a planet have life where it could not before. Or create a cure for a poison or how to create a bone fuser to increase healing and shorten recovery time. Rand couldn’t fathom how they came up with it all.

“It is to me as well. To most scientists. That’s why we want to do our part to make it happen. To study until the impossible becomes possible.” Roman was always more interested in natural environments, animals. How species evolved over time. That was why his specialty was zoology. But he had always had interest in other branches of science, and during his time studying, he’d taken at least one class of chemistry, physics, ecology and environmental sciences, planetary science, biochemistry… He didn’t know enough in anything but his specialist to be considered any sort of expert, but he knew the basics of several fields.

Rand grinned, “It makes my vinegar and baking soda volcano from 1st grade look really uninteresting.” She was impressed by how much Roman knew. She supposed she knew just as much just about different topics. But then great literature wasn’t going to help transform a world. She yawned softly behind her hand. She wasn’t really tired, okay maybe with her foot and all she was, but she didn’t want to stop talking to him.
Rand
“What do you think my first year science project was?” Roman said and smiled again. Rand yawned, she must’ve been getting tired. It was getting kind of late, after all. He didn’t want to stop talking to her, but he didn’t want to keep her here if she wanted to go to sleep, so he said, “You’re getting tired?”

She bet his spewed fire and ash and small dirt and pebbles and smoked and everything. She remembered Arvin’s, Randy’s best friend, volcano had been a recreation of Pompeii with all the destruction and preserved bodies and everything. It had been impressive. She also thought that maybe Arvin’s dad had done most of it. Rand grinned though, “It was fun watching all of it foam up and go everywhere. We added food coloring and it stained everything it touched.” Rand shook her head, “Some from all the walking on my foot, but not sleepy.” She was tired, more like physically worn out, she never really noticed how much she walked and traversed the ship in a day. And she knew Roman was tired, that seemed to be a constant state for him recently, it was just a matter of degree. “Should I make us tea?”
Rand
It had, he’d even managed to make it so that the “ground shaking” (him shaking the table) set off the eruption by triggering the chemicals to mix. There wasn’t allowed to be any real fire, because fire and six year olds aren’t usually a good mix, so instead he’d used something that flows and gotten the volcano to launch it out with the eruption. “Everyone should do that project, we’d have a lot more scientists.”
“More experiments are a must. We did another one that year where we made slime and it was magnetic. My mom couldn’t get rid of that stuff fast enough. It attached to everything. I always understood better by doing. I think that’s why I liked theatre so much, you had to do, not just read about it.”
Roman was glad to hear she wasn’t sleepy yet, and her offer of tea was one he couldn’t refuse. Being tired was more or less a constant state, and he was getting a little sleepy, but he didn’t want to go straight to bed just yet. “Please, do,” he said.

“Okay,” Rand smiled and then stood up carefully to make sure her foot wasn’t going to embarrass her. Then without realizing what she was doing, before she let go of his hand, she leaned over and kissed his cheek. Her eyes went really wide and she backed up a quick step, having surprised herself, and she stammered, “Uh…oh…um…I…I’ll go get it.” She turned quickly for the door.

Before Roman had realized what was happening, Rand had leaned over and kissed his cheek. The action surprised him, and he paused for a moment. Not at all upset, actually he was quite happy about it. But her eyes went wide and she backed off, and Roman didn’t want her to leave. “Miranda, wait,” he said, trying to catch her before she left. “You gave me some of the tea, remember? And I’ve got a kettle. We can make some right here.”
