The work load was back to normal, and it would probably be easier to keep up if Roman didn’t hate paperwork so much. “I will look forward to when you start running again,” he said. He did miss the morning runs, even though he wasn’t usually much of a runner. He wondered if it was because it was with Rand, or because he was starting to like running.~ Roman
It made Rand feel really happy to know that he wanted to run with her in the mornings. In truth, leading up to her accident, Rand had anticipated Roman joining her, and on the days he hadn’t she’d been both relieved that he was sleeping and sharply disappointed he wasn’t joining her. She squeezed his hand looking a little mischievous. The longer she was around him the more relaxed and like herself she felt.
“You know you don’t have to run with me. I’ll still help with your paperwork. But if you want Scottish coffee you’ll have to keep joining me.”Rand
“Easiest choice of my life,” replied Roman, smiling at her once again. Joining her was something he’d like to do anyway. And their nightly chats were probably the only thing keeping him sleeping adequately. Besides, Roman needed no excuse to spend more time with Rand. He opted for tea rather than the coffee some nights, but Rand’s Scottish coffee was one of his favourite drinks these days.

Roman’s comment made Rand feel like butterflies were fluttering around in her stomach and she smiled. She was quiet for a bit but she wasn’t as self conscious this time. She was able to simply enjoy his presence for a moment before she realized it was quiet. “If you settled on another planet, after star Fleet, what is the one thing from Earth you would miss?”
Rand
“I think just the familiarity of it. Every planet does things a little differently, even the ones with established colonies or cultures of their own. And some are better than Earth, but I think being away, you miss the faults as well as the good points.” Roman hoped his answer made sense. That no matter what the planet was like, it wouldn’t be Earth, and because of that, it would be quite different from living on Earth, and sometimes even ‘good-different’ could make one homesick.
~ Roman
Rand nodded thoughtfully, she understood all too well. “Better the faults you understand than the ones you don’t. I didn’t think about quite like that. When we meet new species we have to learn about each other’s customs and expectations. I didn’t consider that Earth colonies would mean having to learn all new expectations and social cues. It makes sense, but I never thought of that.” She seemed to really be contemplating that, teeth tugging on her lower lip. She had thought it might be exciting to live on another world for a year or so, but maybe it would be too anxiety inducing after all.
Rand
“It depends how long the colony has been separated from Earth. And what the purpose of the original colony was.” Most newer colonies didn’t have readily available space travel, though they did have the means to call for help. They would only be visited by supply vessels, the occasional visitor. It allowed their society to drift somewhat from Earth. But it would take hundreds of years for any meaningful changes, save for something like the Terra Nova incident of the 2100’s.

“I want to visit the Caldos Colony. They went all over Scotland, to each clan, and took cornerstones with them to be the cornerstones of the buildings. They want to preserve Scottish tradition. I would live to visit some time and see if they made it. It’s 200 light years from Earth, and a Terra forming project. But I don’t really understand what they’re doing.”
Rand
“I’ve heard of it,” Roman said. “Their terraforming efforts are going well, reportedly.” He wasn’t fully read up on the project, though, and that was all he knew. “Perhaps we could visit sometime.” The Sentinel had no business there, whenever they got the chance to visit, it would be personally.
~ Roman
“They said they were going to make the planet look exactly like Scotland. I don’t know how....” she started to ask him how they would do that when the rest of his comment registered. Rand was aware that they were not enroute to pass by Caldos, so that would…oh…oh like shore leave together…sometime, so not right now, but… uhhh…as in they might still be dating by the time they were close enough to visit?? Rand was more than a bit flustered, and it was probably obvious, but she wasn’t panicking, was she? “You mean together, just you and me?” She didn’t want to misunderstand, and had it been anyone else she would have been too anxious to ask. He liked her that much? Did she like him that much to consider the possibility? She glanced up at him while she considered it and was a little surprised (like it snuck up on her-again) that yes she did like him that much. To consider that she would want to still be dating that long.
Rand
“They introduce—“ Roman had just barely started his explanation when he noticed how flustered Rand seemed to be. He squeezed her hand a little bit. Her second comment referenced what he’d said about visiting together. But he didn’t understand why it made her nervous. It would be a while before they could… Oh. If it was going to be a while before they could visit, just the two of them, together, that meant they’d presumably be together that long. He considered it a moment, not wanting to answer on emotion alone. But he did hope this lasted that long. Maybe it was hopeful, but he liked her that much, and he hoped they would be dating long enough to go on shore leave to Caldos. “Yes, together.”
~ Roman
Rand squeezed his hand back just a bit and said softly, “I..I would like that.” Then she turned a little more in her chair so she was facing him more. She’d stopped his explanation with her stunned tangent. “I didn’t mean to interrupt what you were saying.” It hadn’t been that she wasn’t paying attention or find what he was saying interesting, she had just been caught off guard and flustered.
Rand
Roman smiled and shrugged. Rand always liked his science explanations, he didn’t at all think she wasn’t interested. “It’s alright.” He said, and then he finished the explanation about how terraforming planets work, and how he’d heard the Caldos terraforming was supposed to work to make the planet resemble Earth’s United Kingdom’s climate.
