“I mean we’re supposed to be on a peaceful mission but history tells us that we will encounter hostile species no matter our intentions. That’s why all ships are equiped with offensive weapons systems and we have dedicated security teams that are armed. When I was at the Academy I bribed the hand-to-hand instructor for some lessons. Extra spots in classes were hard to get. He finally agreed.” Oh yeah it was a great way for him to stay in shape, it was a good way to make her distracted too....if she was lucky he wouldn’t ask why she was suddenly red and finishing her water. Clearing her throat and grinned at him a slight laugh to her voice, “It looked like you blew off plenty of steam. That poor practice dummy won’t forget the lab safety protocols ever again.” She was teasing him.

Rand

Roman nodded. “If you ever want it, you won’t have to bribe me to teach you,” he said and then he smiled. She turned a pretty bright red and his grin widened. “Watching closely, were you?” He asked, clearly teasing. “No, it certainly will not. I plan to teach Mr. Dummy another lesson on Thursday.”

~ Roman

If possible, Rand turned redder. She looked at him, away, and back. “Maybe…” In fact she had been watching so closely she had tripped over her own feet and almost fell while watching him. She glanced down at her foot, “I am sure that will be a lesson worth watching, but maybe next time.” She was sure she would love to watch him again, but she doubted there was much she could do in the gym in two days that her foot would be healed enough for. And just going to stare was too obvious and welcoming of gossip. She was excited about the idea of lessons though.

Rand

“Once your ankle is fully healed, of course. We don’t need any more accidents.” Roman greatly enjoyed her maybe. He knew how people saw him, and he was used to people looking, but the idea of her watching was pleasing. “But whenever you are ready, feel free.” He said. He did not usually teach anyone, that was what Security was for. But Roman would be more than happy to give lessons to Rand. Especially if it would keep her safer if she ever did need to go on a landing party.

~ Roman

As much as she would enjoy watching Roman just because Rand was also good at picking up information and details by observing....she wasn’t sure that justification would hold up with anyone. “I’d like that. I took a couple of Lt Fordham’s classes before he left. I wish it was standard for everyone. It’s not something I ever considered as a hobby. As Captain’s Yeoman I am expected to go wherever the captain does or even go in her place and report back. It’s scary to know that I am the weakest link. I doubt I would ever not be, but I don’t want to be a total liability.” She grinned, “That and a bottle of Tellar Vychet wine convinced the Academy instructor.”

Rand

“That’s why you make it your hobby,” Roman said. “You enjoy it, you’re more likely to keep it up. And the more you do it, the better you’ll be.” Roman shook his head. “Tellar Vychet wine? Man had bad taste, if you ask me. Too dry.” Scott already thought he liked her, her watching him excersice would be a field day for Scott.

~ Roman

Rand shrugged, “I have no idea, I never tried it. That’s what he wanted, so that is what I got him. Probably picked it because it was really hard to get. It was good practice though. Obtaining and trading for items like that is a skill we train for. Everything we need is provided by Star Fleet. What we want…we have to figure out ourselves. I guess in a couple weeks we’ll find out if I like it enough to make it a hobby or if I’m just too stubborn to give up.” She was relaxed again, her resurfacing accent testimony to that. She started to pick up her glass again, but it was empty.

Rand

Roman hoped she’d like it, because then that was another thing they could do together. But he wasn’t sure she would. “I’ve told you about my hobbies, what do you do for fun?” He asked, flipping the question to her.

~Roman

Rand was sure she would enjoy the lessons. She had the few she’d managed to take. Whether she was good at it or not was another question. “I like to read, and watch theatre productions when I can get copies. I like to run, but I love to run outside, cross-country. I like to bake. I am not nearly as good as my grandmother. My favorite are chocolate chip cookies and her Scottish Scones.” She had some small space to warm food or drinks, but she would have to beg the cook to use the kitchen if she really wanted to cook.

Rand

“Then someday I will have to try Scottish scones,” Roman said. “I could never do cross country.” He better at shorter bursts of activity, he’d certainly not be found running any marathons. But with how good Rand’s tea and coffee was, he could only image how her baking was.

~ Roman

“I have some, but they are from a couple days ago. They’re better when they are fresh.” Oddly enough scones were something she could manage in the small kitchen area. “I guess I’m used to it. We didn’t use a ground car growing up. Everything we needed on a daily basis was within walking distance. Dad only used the car if we had to leave town. So we walked, the Scottish countryside is beautiful. But I’m biased.” At his comment about cross country she shook her head at him. “I bet you could. It just takes practice, and you’re fit enough for it…umm…”

Rand

“I only travelled by car, or plane. I didn’t walk anywhere unless I had to,” Roman said. And usually, the car was driven by a chauffeur, not anyone in his family. He did know how to drive, but he’d learned after he’d moved to San Francisco. “There isn’t enough space on a ship. That’s why you run in the morning, isn’t it?”

~ Roman

“That’s part of the reason. Less people to run into, and I can keep my pace without having to stop a lot. Less people also means no one tries to stop me to socialize. There are hours designated on the gym deck for running, but ummm…after I went to Lt Fordham’s class, it was easier to just get up early. They…uh…put me in back of the group when we went to run laps. I ended up passing everyone.” She was slightly embarrassed over what had happened, but she wasn’t with him. “I kind of meditate when I run, and I didn’t realize I was showing everyone up. Lt Fordham didn’t mind and no one else seemed to, but they started teasing me. Not…not being mean, just friendly, but…”

Rand

“I always get more done when I go in early… or stay late,” Roman said. “It’s easier to focus when no one’s around.” He also understood not wanting to get teased because you were better than everyone. He usually just tuned people out, though, rather than avoid them.

~ Roman

“I prefer to get started earlier. The ship is quiet and even gamma shift doesn’t seem to be around. I guess they are used to working in quiet because most others are asleep. But working late isn’t the same. There are always people around and the noise of them coming and going, moving about as they move from duty to off duty. There is a stillness early in the morning.” Rand could sometimes tune people out, like when she was running. But being Cpt’s Yeoman she was aware she was viewed as a reflection of the captain. She should not, even accidentally, be viewed as being rude. So it was harder, sometimes, to tune it out. So she loved the quiet of the early mornings.

Rand

For Roman it was more dependent on when he could sleep. If he was awake early anyway, and unable to fall back asleep, might as well work. If he’d had better sleep the night before and slept later, he had the energy to stay later. Either way he had extra time to get everything done. Rand was right, evenings were noisier than late night or early morning. When most people were asleep, the ship was almost eerily quiet, except for where the night crews worked. “Mornings are quieter, but for me it’s about when I’ve got the time to work extra. Or run with you,” he said.

~ Roman

When working Rand would take the quiet when she got it, when she felt she could get the most done. For herself though she loved the mornings. She didn’t find the quiet erie though she understood why some people thought so. “You do so much you have to take the time you can get.” She knew the work load was less with Rogers on board now, but Roman still did quite a lot. “You are always welcome to run with me when you have time.” Thinking of running, she wondered if there might be some resistance bands in the gym to help gently work on strengthening her foot. She flexed her foot slightly as it was starting to feel stiff from being still, but she would rather that than be up and walking around. She was starting to feel the ache from the long day.
