“It would,” agreed Roman. He realised the only reason he hadn’t been the subject of any juvenile jokes was because of his position and he shrugged. To him, it was equally bad behaviour to bully the yeoman as it was him, and he didn’t like the idea that it was somehow ‘going further’ to prank him that to prank Rand. But he also knew most people didn’t see it that way. “It’s no problem,” he said, taking his seat back after she stood.~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
Rand reported the malfunction to engineering, opting to go in person and beg a favor directly. More on who worked on it than how fast. Her malfunction was not a priority, but she didn’t want the person pranking her to get it and make it worse. She opted to talk to one of the enlisted engineers. They never seemed to engage in the idiodicy that the commissioned officers did. She didn’t understand it. It could be a couple of days before they got to it, and that was fine, she could hand write the reports. But the crewman promised to look into the how, why and who had caused the malfunction.
She had almost twisted her foot again in her rush to try and get things done. So by lunch time she’d given up on catching up and focused on maintaining. She should probably stop to eat, but she had no desire to sit in the galley if the person playing the pranks was in there too. Watching her and anyone else, hoping to see her loose her composure. Besides she had someone else she’d rather see. Okay so she probably wouldn’t see him and that was something she knew would come out but with this other going on…Rand sighed, why did life have to be complicated? She didn’t know what to do now, and there really wasn’t anyone to ask. And there were no protocols concerning this tangent on the events. However, the other person…well mouse…she wanted to see was Nibbles. So later than her normal lunch arrival (making sure not to over do her foot) she stepped into the lab and right over to the enclosure, popping the lid and whispering softly.
Yeoman Rand
Shortly after Rand left, Roman had gone into the lab to do his usual work. The animals’ enclosures were newly cleaned, each of them had been fed, and his daily notes and observations were taken care of. After he started his normal paperwork, he’d gone to get lunch, half-hoping to see a certain someone in the galley. But she wasn’t there, and so he ate by himself and left, and on the way back to the lab, he’d been called off to deal with another issue, and then he was finally able to return to the lab.
And there was Rand, at Nibbles’ enclosure like always, playing with the little strange mouse. She had the lid popped and she was whispering, and he was reminded of the day a few weeks ago, the last time he’d overheard her little lunch chat with the mouse. But instead of backing into the hallway and listening, he came up next to her. “I take it she’s doing well?” He asked. There was another question he wished to ask, but he found the prospect of asking oddly nerve-wracking, and he lost his nerve.

Rand looked up quickly as if startled by his sudden appearance, but more because she’d been wondering where he was and he was suddenly there than because she was surprised. “She’s skittish. She’s not coming over like she usually does.” Rand shook out some of the food and scattered it around the cage and left her hand at the far end, like she usually did. However, Nibbles would only come a few inches from the small den, refusing to come anywhere near her hand, and when her finger twitched from the odd angle, the mouse ran back into her den. “She’s not used to me anymore.” She very carefully removed her hand so Nibbles would come out and get the rest of the food.
Yeoman Rand
Roman watched the little mouse as she poked her nose out and then scurried back into her den. “She’ll get used to you again. I’m surprised she’s this skittish, you were only out a week,” he said. The mouse had acted quite depressed most of the week, looking for Rand at her normal times. He was sure Rand would put it in her observations, she always did.
He paused for a moment, considering how exactly to phrase what he wanted to say, and finally decided on, “Do you want to do something tonight? With me.” As in, a date. He was asking her on a date. The question came out fairly smoothly, he could fake confidence even when he wasn’t feeling it. He didn’t think she’d turn him down, but he still waited in nervous silence for her answer.
