“Can’t you just cast it and let it heal naturally?” Rand could wait, she really didn’t like that machine. Grat shook his head, “No. Now hold still.”Rand held still, teeth clenched, eyes closed. A couple minutes in she looked pale and maybe a bit I’ll. At some point she’d grabbed his hand again, but she didn’t make a sound the whole time. At one point, the pain got to her and she squeezed his hand tighter, and a single tear leaked out, but not a sound. Later she she could be mortified that she was holding onto his hand a crying from the pain.
Yeoman Rand
He was pulled out of his own mind when Rand grabbed his hand again, and he saw she looked quite pale. She squeezed his hand and he let her, holding her hand gently. “Take the pain medication this time, Miranda, it’ll help.” His voice was gentle and caring, he hated seeing her in such pain. Knowing why that was only made it worse. He just wanted her to be healed, but that would take time.

No she didn’t want the pain medication, it made her sleep…what? She turned her head to look at him. Did he just…oh wow…he did. He actually knew her name. Well of course he had access to her file, but no one rally knew her first name, or didn’t use it anyway. She liked the way he said it. He’d never called her that before.
What did he say? Oh, take the meds. “Okay.” Her voice was soft, strained from the pain, and a little surprised. She squeezed his hand again as the fuser did its work. “Yeah, okay.” Finally, eventually, Grat removed the fuser and put the boot back on. Rand felt wiped. When Temple came over with the hypo of pain meds she let the nurse give them to her. “Did you…have other animals that were pets?” She wasn’t sure if he would answer, but she was trying not to think about the pain in her foot and she wanted him to stay, at least a little longer?
Yeoman Rand
Roman kept a hold of her hand, letting her squeeze it. He was tired, he’d been here way longer than he’d planned to be. But he really didn’t care just then. “No. No more pets,” he replied, “I volunteered at a shelter, once, for school.” All students were required to volunteer for a period of time. Their choice where. He didn’t expand on that story just then, but he would if she asked him to. He was going to sit there until she fell asleep again.

“Is that why you decided to study biology and zoology?” Yes Rand knew the subsection of biology that his work focused on. She’d been doing some research and study on her own. It seemed, to her, to fit him exactly, to give of his free time to care for innocent animals. She wouldn’t tell though.
A small smile appeared on his face. “Not exactly. We were already interested in biology by then, zoology only made sense. I’d have done it longer, but we started dedicating all our time to the Academy entrance process, preparing for it.” They had actually volunteered longer than required by the school, but had to quit when they started preparing to do the academy entrance process, for which they had studied for two years.
“I bet you always knew you wanted to go to the academy. Study strange planets and alien animals. Did you always want command too?” She bet his family was really proud of him. He’d made XO quickly in his career. But he never talked much of them so she didn’t say anything. She couldn’t think of why though, at the moment.
It had been Jay’s idea, his father was a starship Captain. But Roman had latched on to the idea quickly. They were just kids then, five or six years old. He supposed he did say that, that he’d always wanted to do Starfleet. Her second question reminded him of the games they used to play, where they’d pretend to be captains and first officers, and the memory made him sad, so he just nodded wordlessly.
The thing about hyposprays was they worked fast. So the pain was already starting to dull, and the sudden absence of pain made her sleepy, and she blinked several times while she listened to him talk. Her grip relaxed but she didn’t move her hand away. Eventually, sooner rather than later the meds knocked her out.
Yeoman Rand
Roman kept hold of her hand even as her grip relaxed, not wanting to let go until she was fully asleep. He could tell she was quickly headed that direction as she blinked and then it seemed her eyelids were drooping, and eventually, she seemed completely asleep.

Rand was too stubborn for her own good. She fought to stay awake for a few minutes, trying to continue the conversation. But after 5 minutes her responses were choppy and her voice heavy as the medicine forced her towards sleep. Then a few minutes later, she thought she was responding to him, but she wasn’t, she was already asleep.
Yeoman Rand
Roman waited until she was definitely asleep, and no longer responding, before he left and returned to his quarters. A short nap later and he was to be up anyway, and then the next night he was at the computer, reading Starfleet Rules and Regulations.

Rand slept through morning reports and breakfast. When she did wake up she wasn’t surprised he was gone. Did he sleep at all? He shouldn’t have stayed with her so long, lack of sleep, over several days, messed with his work. Rand DID wonder how Nibbles was doing. The mouse was her responsibility, but more she wondered if he had managed to get all of the morning reports and his XO duties done. She had no doubt the science stuff would get done. She wondered about Rogers and her insistance that the ship would survive without her for the week. And she wondered about Willow and if she was drinking the formula Alden gave Rogers.
She had every intention of repeating her insane comm circus that next day, but her communicator was gone. When she asked, Shrine laughed, “Temple took it and we have it all safe and sound. Today you are going to rest. AND you are here for another night. You didn’t respond well to one of the sessions, so you aren’t healed enough to leave.” Rand spent most of the day asleep because of the pain medication. Awake long enough to endure another two painful sessions with the bone fuser and to eat. She was awake late that night again. She heard foot falls two or three times and she though it might be Cmdr Alden, but it wasn’t. She was disappointed, and then berated herself for being silly and unrealistic. She tossed and turned for awhile, as much as one could with a broken foot. Then Temple gave her another dose and she was asleep again.
Yeoman Rand
Roman had wanted to go and see her, really he had, but he was confused about his own feelings. He wasn’t very good with these things. Instead he’d spent the whole of the night researching the regulations of Starfleet, specifically the parts pertaining to fraternization of officers. Not great for his sleep schedule, but he was too distracted for that anyway. Roman decided the next night, he’d focus on sleeping. Or at least try to.

Randy had looked at the results and knew exactly what had happened. Rand had tried to walk around. He didn’t tell on her, but boy did he give it to her. He threatened to keep her in sickbay the whole week if she tried it again. But she behaved and the third day she was allowed to go back to her quarters, no more sessions with the bone fuser. She wasn’t allowed to walk all the way back, and that was embarrassing, but they didn’t meet anyone along the way. She was allowed to work at her desk, and the reports waiting for her made her cringe. She worked for a little while, until she was too tired. She thought maybe now that she was out of sickbay there would be request for coffee, but nothing. Maybe he was sleeping alright, and that was a good thing.
Yeoman Rand
His reports would suggest she was wrong, there were no major errors however one of them was dated a month in the future and another had the wrong name on it. On the fourth night, Roman ultimately decided that the last thing he should do is avoid her, which might make her think he didn’t like her, and so on the fifth night, he showed up for coffee.
~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
Rand corrected the reports, and didn’t think much of it, it wasn’t like him to make such simple errors, but he was handling everything without her assistance. She noticed similar errors across the departments so it didn’t stand out to her that maybe it was out of the ordinary for him given the circumstances.
When the chime rang, Rand called, “Come in.” She was sitting on her bed, leg stretched out and propped on a pillow, on the left side of the room. On either side of her bed was a small night stand and then another twin sized bed past that. The quarter were divided by a half solid/half latice wall. The right side of the area was a work/eating/prep area and a door to a lavatory on the far wall. Looking up see saw him enter, “Cmdr Alden.” She smiled and then realized she had her stuffed kelpie on the bed next to her which she promptly hid behind her pillow. A glance at Randy’s bed told her his giraffe was still on the floor on the far side where she’d thrown it back at him earlier that afternoon. “Come in.” She pushed herself up to sitting straighter. “Would you like to sit down?”
Yeoman Rand
The door opened and Roman stepped in, peeking quickly to see if Randy was there. Seeing that he wasn’t, Roman relaxed somewhat. He’d never actually been in Rand’s quarters. Her quick stash of the stuffed animal did not escape his notice and he smiled slightly. “I would. I would’ve visited again but- I was busy,” he said, feeling the need to explain his absence. It wasn’t like it was an unbelievable excuse after all.
~ Lt Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
Looking around would show the quarters were neat and set up for as much efficiency as possible when two people who were always on call was capable of. There were several photos around, most depicting Rand,Randy, or both with other people who shared a family resemblance. There was a set of bagpipes on the dresser, the bag in the same design as Rand’s sash. There was also a family crest on the wall and a couple of tartan throw blankets.
Rand nodded her understanding. She knew everyone was probably busier than normal. Someone had to complete the reports and deliver them, run deliveries from one department to another, to the department heads, the galley, to the captain, to Alden as the XO, run reports and requests between sections and individuals. “I’m allowed to work from my desk now, but not wander all over the ship, back and forth, as Elbbirt put it.” She realized the only place for him to sit where she was, was her bed. She turned and put her feet on the floor and stood up very slowly. She was allowed to walk around her quarters, she just had to be careful she didn’t move too fast and her ankle give out or stand on it too long. She moved toward him. She was wearing a soft cotton peach knit sweater and thick comfortable heather grey lounge pants. Her hair down rather than in a bun or a pony tail. She kept one hand out ready to grab onto whatever was near by just in case, and moved to the table so he could sit with her. “Do you want coffee?”
