Quinn pushed her fingers into her temples and rubbed, trying very hard not to express her frustration vocally. Or at all. The Rec Room had been converted into a classroom… of sorts. The four other helm officers - everyone minus Violet Chen, who was on duty tonight, sat in a semicircle around her, trying to answer the questions she posed. “Okay… let’s try this again. Um…” She looked at the list of questions. They were from the study guide from the Academy, she’d decided to start with the basics, just… to make sure everyone was on the same page. She’d assumed they’d be through the guide in ten minutes and on to more complex… teaching. She didn’t know what she was doing or why she’d decided to waste her time with this. Something about making the XO happy, even if he didn’t know the hell she was going through.“Okay, let’s… move on to the next question. Your shuttle is running low on energy and you have to make it through a heavy debris field to land on the planet. What do you do?”
Kyle Jeeter raised his hand. “Ask the Nav officer to plot us a course through the debris.”
Quinn twitched.

“Come on, we all passed the academy course,” said another NE, Deena Grey shooting a glance at Jeeter. “You don’t use too much energy accelerating and you don’t want to go too fast anyway, so you can maneuver around the debris.” The NE thought she was right. Whether she was or not… that might be up for debate.

Quinn smiled at Deena, glancing down at her notes. “Good. There are a lot of good answers to that question. What would you do, T’eelo?”
The Caitian Helm officer froze for a few seconds before speaking. “I’d turn off the shields and use the extra power from that to slow the shuttle down even more - so I can maneuver better.”
“I was gonna say that,” Jeeter grumbled, earning a little hiss from T’eelo.
“Ok…” Quinn looked up at the clock. She’d only promised to work on this for an hour and they were… oh so close to the end of this. “Okay, okay… next one. Your ship is hit by a energy blast and is tumbling. How do you stop the motion and how do you re-orient your ship to her previous heading?” This one wasn’t exactly on the exam. The idea of tumbling wasn’t covered much, ships weren’t expected to go off-axis.
