Rand walked into her shared quarters with Randy, not paying attention to anything around her. She was mad. She stomped over to the small kitchen area, where she could easily prepare simple snacks or coffee for the CO and XO if required. She pulled out cheeze-whiz and crackers and went and threw herself down on her bed. She grabbed Iòna, her stuffed Kelpie, tucked it into an elbow and popped the cap off the cheeze-whiz. She was muttering curses in Gaelic and totally ignoring the crackers and just oozing the cheeze-whiz straight into her mouth. The longer she laid their, the louder her muttering got, and the more colorful it became.

Rand

Randy strode into their quarters, his first day as head nurse was a colorful one to say the least he walked in and started to go “Oh. My. God. Rand you would not believe the things that medical has to deal with and I’m a therapist, not a nurse!” He said as he turned to the dulcet tones of Gaelic swearing as he said, “Dè fo Shealbh.....”. He grabbed the can out of her hand as he sat next to her, a wonderful spray of what claimed to be cheeze entering his mouth as he said, “You’re mad… what happened…”

Randy

Rand glared at him as he stole her cheeze-whiz. After he helped himself to some she snatched it back and started to squeeze more out but instead, finger still on the dispenser, she started waving the can around, thrusting it this way and that, to make her point. “Randy you are a nurse. Well a Nurse Practitioner. Which means you are just as good as a doctor. I know you prefer to be a therapist, but you are an incredible nurse too. You are just good at helping people.” She was avoiding his question.

“Ok just because I scraped by on my exams doesn’t mean I’m as good as a doctor. You where and always have been the better student Rand. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without you pestering me to answer medical questions at 0300…” Randy was, at this point, doing his best to try and cheer her up but also try to ensure that he wasn’t way too over his head. But those feelings of insecurity were pushed to the back of his brain.

Rand grinned, “Yes I stayed up and helped you study, just like you used to help me run lines over and over again. But you ARE a good nurse, Randy. It’s not what you are passionate about but it’s your compassion and your ability to talk to people that makes you so good.” She sat up and hugged her brother tightly. They both had their own insecurities. Randy was brilliant, was no astrophysicist but then an astrophysicist couldn’t do what Randy could do, either. “And guess what came across my desk this morning? Our new doctor arrives in two days! And another assistant doctor a couple days after.” She knew that would relieve some of Randy’s stress. An NP was not the same as a doctor but a lot of their schooling was similar so that an NP could step in for a doctor if need be. She hoped that news relieved some of Randy’s stress.

She was mad, but more she was hurt and feeling sorry for herself. And it was the same old issue. People belittling her and her job because they saw what she did as useless, pointless, or interfering. She would never tell them how to do her job. Everyone else sat in the rec hall complaining of long hours and no time. But they sat there for at least a couple hours. Rand might (if she could work up the nerve to go to the rec hall) sit 20 minutes if she was lucky before being called back to work. She was the reason they had their favorite meals, new games and music tapes in the rec hall, weird equipment that was at a premium to get, personal items got approved on cargo requests. They could not do what she did. But she was treated like…like less than crew. And it was all supposed to be okay because they used stupid terms of endearment that made her uncomfortable and nauseous.

“Tell me all about your day. I want the gossip.” She could hope that Randy’s love of gossip would distract him from her mood.

Rand

Randy read his twin like a book and knew exactly what she meant when she wanted gossip. “Ok so you want some gossip. I’ll tell you what’s going on with Jenkins and Patsy, if you tell me what’s got you so worked up?” Randy said as he held his hand out expectantly, almost like a diva, waiting to be handed the cheese whiz as he held court. “So you know that Jenkins and Patsy have been dating right? Low key stuff like holding hands or kissing when no one is looking right? Well both of them came to me in sick bay with a rather unfortunate rash…” Randy said as he let his words hang in the air for a moment, “So they’ve been low key in public but in private they’ve been up to some…interesting activities at home?” He said with a smirk, “So as they came to me, cheeks flushed with embarrassment as they told me what happened. It was steamy night in Jenkin’s quarters, temperature about 30C as read by the internal sensors with squeaking bulkheads abound in their flurry of activity.” He said as he figured he’d kept her in suspense long enough.

“So I’m sure you’re wondering just how much fun they were having? Well as it turns out Patsy wanted to make a muscle phad thai for dinner and didn’t know that they had a shellfish allergy, and also didn’t know that Jenkins had a peanut allergy!” Randy said as he smiled with a twinkle in his eye, “The temperature was the stove and the bulkheads were them trying to rearrange furniture to better accommodate a new couch!” Randy giggled as he continued, “So neither of them had dealt with their allergies before and it was easy enough to treat, the rashes where their first exposures, and I gave them the proper medications and a good recipe for gran’s cullen skink.”

Randy

Rand chuckled, “OH NO. Poor things. I bet they thought they had really gotten into the mire. I’m glad the reaction wasn’t too bad though. They are lucky. OH Gran’s cullen skink! Maybe the cook will let us borrow the Galley one night and we can make it? Do you think we could?” Rand would love an excuse to do something so ‘normal’ with her brother. But now that he had finished his tale it was her turn and she sighed and sat back against her headboard, knees drawn up, hugging her kelpie. “It’s that new helm officer Dagget. I was meeting the new navigator to do her welcome tour and paper work. Get her settled, welcome her to the crew. Dagget appeared out of nowhere, told me I was ‘just everywhere’ and far too busy to ‘do a simple tour.’ I told her I was happy to do it, that I don’t mind doing my job or meeting new crew. She can’t even be bothered to call me En Rand, she calls me Rand like she knows me, gets in my personal space and calls me ‘love’ all the time. I don’t like it. It makes me uncomfortable and no matter how many times I call her En Dagget she just keeps doing it. Then find out her and the new navigator were friends at Academy. So of course En. E’usha was nice enough but of course jumped at the idea of her friend giving her the tour. How was I supposed to say ‘no’ without sounding hateful and uptight and…and just a horrible person? So I left them to it....and Cmdr Alden saw. I got in trouble for neglecting my duty…” Rand hugged herself tighter. “And he was right, it was my job I was assigned to do it and Dagget hasn’t been here long enough to be considered familiar enough to do tours. No matter what they said it was no excuse to walk away from my duties. Why do people always have to make light of what I do, Randy?”
