Their guide nodded. “..Of course, hope you don’t mind trucking through the mud with this rain.” He said as they went back out of the cover of the collectors and into the still pounding rain storm. Lightening and thunder were echoing now and then too now.

Their trek to the mines was a slow muddy slog, about a half a mile or so made longer by the thick goop their boots stuck in. Finally though the mine came into sight. Haulers and Diggers, two types of vehicles used for hauling and digging obviously were present, but neither were in use currently. A pair of colonial security guards as mentioned were on a nervous watch near the gate but were looking like they were unwilling to get much closer. Turning sharply one seemed to half jump in surprise having not heard the groups slogging arrival. “..Oh sir! I see the Fleeters finally arrived. Thank goodness!” the young man said.

Nodding their guide replied. “..Yeah sorry for the delay we were checking out equipment faults in the solar collectors. Anything to report on this end?” He asked.

”..Just the storm, though I swear sometimes there looks like shadows moving near the mine entrance, might just be the trick of the lighting in there and the storm though. All this trouble is putting my teeth and mind on edge.” He replied.

Rand noticed the obvious relief of the guards. She wondered if Randy might have been a better choice to send. He was so good with people and his degree is psychology might help. Shrugging she continued to scan and record. At the young man’s mention of shadows near the entrance she turned her tricorder in that direction to see if it picked anything up and peered through the storm at the entrance to see if she noticed anything like what he described.

Nothing obvious was picked up, scans penetrated the mine entrance by about 200 yards before natural rock and mineral interference kicked in. In what they could read there was mostly clean air to breathe (it was a bit dusty and dirty in there!), and there was no signs of known life in the scans either.

Roman had been following the group, taking in information but so far had said little. He heard the worker mention moving shadows, and thinking it might be relevant, he asked, “Did you happen to catch what shape the shadows were? Any detail like that?”

Rubbing the back of his neck, the two security guards looked at each other, then back to the landing party. “..Sort of humanoid like?” one said.

”..No no! They were humanoid like up tope but......well slithery like on the bottom.” The other said.

”..How would you know you screamed like a girl the first sight you saw of them!” the other said back half jokingly.

”..Hey you shot at one and the laser shot went through both! So what’s it matter?” The other snapped back.

Once they were near the gate and conversing with the guards, Anderson took a moment to try and clean some of the muck off his shoes. It had been quite the slog getting over here. Man. Hopefully the travel would be easier inside. He let the others ask questions, glancing around and trying to get his own impression of the mine entrance.

Ford continued swiveling his head as he scanned the mine entrance area. “Do you have hand lamps?” he asked their guide, and looked to the security guard as well. “I’d prefer backups in case the mine lighting fails. And wish we could attach the damn things to the rifles.” He muttered the last part, looking at the shining copper tubes of the powerful weapon, mostly useless in the dark.

”..Yeah we got lamps, also hover light drones just inside the mine you can activate. If they’re still there I mean and operating.” The first said.

After an answer about the lamps, he focused on the security guards. “Do you feel like you see movement during the day, when it’s not raining?”

COS Ford

”..Saw movement day and night over the past weeks ever since this mess started.” The second said while the first confirmed nodding.

Cloelt chirped up “Sir. I might be able to jerry rig a way to get the light attached, it wouldn’t be 100% secure. But I might be able to mount it on the top side casing.” she said trying to help. While she waited to hear from Ford she peered into the mine. Her eyesight was far superior to humans so maybe she’d be able to see something the other couldn’t.

Something maybe humanoid, but ‘slithery’, that laser weapons passed through, and were active day and night? Roman found himself quite stumped. He’d never heard of anything quite like that. “Let’s hope we get a look at these things before long,” he said.
