Crashing the pad

Posted by Ensign Randal ‘Randy’ Farquharson (Yeoman Second Rate) in Crashing the pad

(snip)

Rand was feeling better at this point in the night. She was totally embarrassed by her sudden panic attack. What was worse was that everyone seemed to notice. And then that impromptu ship tour for Lt Fordham, Ford. She had just enough time to step into the yeoman’s office, more like a closet, and download the reports from the data cards to a PaDD. Then she’d stepped over to Carmichael’s quarters to deliver them. They’d gone over the reports at length and Rand had taken notes and then, using the computer there, returned the signed reports to each department as they were finished. Luckily, she hoped, Carmichael hadn’t asked about what had happened. Maybe, unlike the doctor and Ford, he hadn’t noticed. So now, at 1920 hours Rand was finally walking back into her shared quarters with Randy. Totally wiped from the evening’s events and just wanting to curl up in her bed, under a warm blanket, and forget the whole thing had happened. She dropped the PaDD by it’s strap onto her desk as she walked in heading for her bed.

The door made that ever familiar woosh sound and it was either his sister returning finally or the security detail about to give the man some bad news. He rounded the corner, saw his sister and let loose with a “Miranda!” Randy snapped as he glared her down with a ferocity usually only down by their mother in dire circumstances, “where have you been?!?” He said, voice tense and his pace quickening, “I was worried sick! Stick I tell you! Not only does my sister freak out at the party I make a way for her to slip out right? Did she come back here? Nooooooo of course not. She decided to be god knows where!” Randy’s speech was quickening to a fever pitch. “ I hailed everyone I could think of and no one knew where you were! Leave a note for your brother? Nope! Can’t do that now can we?” Randy said, arms flailing in emphasis.

Randy, Concerned Twin

Rand stood there a moment listening to Randy rant and the longer he ranted the worse she felt. He was totally justified. Once, when she was 8 she’d totally disconnected and run, she’d ended up lost and had no idea where she was when she was finally able to think again. Randy had been the one to find her, but their mom and dad had been out searching for hours for her. Randy had taken it upon himself after that to make sure that didn’t happen again. She often wondered if her ‘problem’ forced Randy into counseling and psychology. He was a genius when it came to helping people and was really revolutionary about his approaches, he was, no he had changed a lot of people’s lives. Hanging her head, ashamed she’d gotten distracted she walked over and hugged her brother tightly. “I’m so sorry, Randy. I didn’t mean to scare you. I left just like the plan. I picked up the reports on my way, to stop myself from running, like you taught me, to stay calm and to focus on something. I…Ford…Lt Fordham stopped me. He wanted a tour of the ship and couldn’t find his quarters. I was late and had to go straight to the captain with the reports.” She felt awful and she’d had no right to worry him. “I am so sorry, Randy.”
Rand, unintentional mischief-maker

Randy wrapped his arms around his sister and held her tight. He listened to her apologies and whispered, “Tha cus dragh orm, dìreach mar a bha ar n-athair” He wanted her to know that he appreciated her understanding but that, much like their father, he was afraid for her. He was patting her on the back when the name hit him. Ford.... she called him Ford first… then corrected. Rand never corrected herself because she always got it right the first time. He pulled off and held her at arms length, looking her up and down. “He was a little too eager to follow you out, an do sheall thu dha an seòmar no an leabaidh aige? Do I need to remind you of Arvin Barclay?” Randy said with a grin. Arvin had been Rand’s first ‘boyfriend’ but given that everyone involved was 13 it was more a case of kids learning that they liked other people in the first place. Arvin had asked Rand to go to the movies and Randy was encouraging, Arvin had been Randy’s best friend since the boys were 5 after all. Well Arvin pulled the whole arm stretch around the back of the seat and leaned over to kiss her trick. Rand freaked out and got a hold of Randy who met them at the theater with the express intention of breaking Arvin’s nose. Well a couple of 13 year old kids punching leads to parents being called and it was the end of Rand and Arvin’s whirlwind romance. Arvin mustn’t have held a grudge as he was still good friends with Randy and the two were roommates in college so there’s that.

She nodded as her brother hugged her. She knew he worried and she’d been inconsiderate in her actions. She should have come straight back. Rand tipped her head to the side as he pulled away. “What are you talking about, eager to follow me?” Her face turned bright red, “Randall Oyne Farquharson! Cha do dh ’fhosgail e an doras eadhon!” She remembered Arvin quite clearly. She’d avoided visiting Randy in college because of Arvin. Arvin as a very nice young man but she’d embarrassed them both, put a strain on his friendship with her brother, and gotten everyone a stern talking to from their parents. All because she had expected to go to the movie with friends, and Arvin had expected a date. She shook her head adamantly, “Cha robh e mar sin!!” It wasn’t like that, was it?

He looked at his sister with a wide grin, “Remember that you’re about as good at seeing other people’s intentions as I am at wearing trousers.” He gave her another hug before letting go and saying, “You’re an adult and I don’t need to hover, but I worry about you sis.”

Randy, Concerned Brother

Randy was right, she was a horrible judge of people. That’s why she did so well with the military regulations of Star Fleet. There were expected actions and reactions and strict protocol to follow. She smiled just a little and hugged Randy again, kissing his cheek. “Is tu mo bhràthair, faodaidh tu faighinn seachad air na tha thu ag iarraidh.” She walked over to the small pantry and pulled out two strawberry milks and set them on the table. Trying to be very nonchalant about it, “Why…why do you think he was eager to follow me?”
