Finally! Mark thought to himself. A question I can answer! “The thing I love most about medicine…” He started. “…is that it never gets old. You’re constantly being tested, no matter what your experience level.” The young doctor grinned.
Mark leaned forward in his chair, clearly getting excited as he spoke passionately on the subject. “I had this one case when I was doing my residency. A 46 year old male human was brought in by the paramedics with multiple puncture wounds. Well, long story short, the doctor on call was so focused on stopping the moderate bleeding from the stab wounds, he never noticed the paridoxical rise and fall of the patient’s chest and his labored breathing.” Mark smirked, knowing the CMO likely already knew what he was going to say.
“A Tension Pneumothorax. Easily treatable, but completely missed by the paramedics and the doctor, was about to take a man’s life.” Mark finally leaned back again in his chair and straightened his uniform. “But an annoying, recent med school graduate noticed.” He said, trying to sound modest. “That’s what I love about medicine. It doesn’t matter whether you’re new to the game or you’ve been in your whole life. It never ceases to try and trip you up.”

“That it can,” she agreed with a nod. “And it’s a good reminder that the basics are still really important no matter how long you’ve been working or how advanced our technology. Breathing always comes before circulation in emergency medicine. That and having a tricorder on hand to alert you of respiratory issues is also handy.” Satreya leaned forward in a conspiratorial way. “I’m glad you already know this stuff. I really don’t like hand-holding my doctors,” she joked.
Leaning back in her seat, she gazed at him. “What’s your experience with things out of the ordinary?”
Lt. Boja, CMO
Mark thought for a second. His only experiences were with basic emergencies regarding mostly humans. He desperately tried to leave Earth for his residency, but he was needs of the Federation. He didn’t have much of a say. “To be honest with you,” He shifted in his chair. “There isn’t much to speak of, but that’s why I’m here.” The doctor grinned. “You don’t need to worry about holding my hand. I’m a quick learner.”
