Boja looked amused. “I could call you Amadeus or Digger or something else entirely, but it would be a bit useless to just shout something at you and expect you to respond.” Yes, she was teasing again. “I think I’ll stick with Mark. But… Flip?” Her brows rose, creasing her forehead against her ridge. She had no nickname here. the only nickname she had ever had her dear friend (and now ex-husband) called her and it sort of seemed to be his name. Teller had opted to not use it and while she hadn’t been opposed to the idea, it did seem… right.

Mark couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle. As much as he hated to admit it, and he would do his best not to, something about the CMO’s personality was rather disarming to him. The young doctor fought the urge to relax, reminding himself that she could read thoughts. He cleared his throat and looked down at the desk. “Yeah. I suppose that wouldn’t make the most sense, would it?” he said, looking back up at the doctor before him. Mark didn’t know why he felt so uncomfortable with being analyzed. It was always an aspect of medicine he was never quite able to grasp.

Mark smiled as warmly as his could muster. She asked about the nickname. he thought nervously to himself. There’s no way I can tell her the real story. Mark’s mind was in a rush to fabricate a story for the nickname. “Well…” He trailed off, buying him an extra second or two to think. “My friends always called me Flip....because when I was a kid, I fractured my T3 and T4 vertebrae trying to do a backflip.” Mark paused for a second. “I was trying to impress a girl.” He blurted out. Great. He thought sarcastically. Really great stuff.

“But…that was a long time ago.” Mark added, trying to fix the train wreck of a story. “That should have no affect on my abilities as a doctor.”

Did she look like she bought the story? Not even a little. But still, Satreya didn’t comment more than to say, “Well, thank goodness for that!” with a laugh. She leaned forward slightly. “But on to the important subject: you and medicine. What is it you love the most? And what do you hope to learn while you’re on the Saracen?” She wanted to know about him as a doctor and his motivation for being here in the first place. Once she understood that, she could figure out how best to aid his growth.
