“Yes, go to Nana and Papa. We have a few hours till her shift ends, I got some people to call…” Jarred said as he kissed his little girl on the head as he patted her off her bed. He knew it would take a while to put his plans in motion, but there was something he felt he needed to do first.
Exiting Lizzie’s quarters Jarred made his way to the desk as he pulled the chair back slowly. The ship luckily ran on the same time as all Federation facilities. It made times easier if everyone followed a standard time. This meant he should find who he needed awake if he was lucky.
Bringing up the directory Jarred waited, it could be a few moments as the subspace request took it’s time to reach the intended target. It wasn’t after a few minutes he her the familiar ring that let him know that his target had accepted.
“This better be important K-bell, you’re mom was almost ready to go to the Klingon restaurant and I don’t like missing my gagh.” came the answer from Robert Kane, Kalani’s father as he looked surprised to see Jarred instead of his daughter. “Jarred.” he said quickly, he didn’t seem to excited once he realized who it was on the other end. “Can I help you? Is Kalani okay?” he asked as he looked at Jarred with a discerning look.
“What I can’t call? Come on I am hurt, you know you love me Mr. Kane I growing on you.” Jarred said as he smirked slightly as he took a deep breath. He didn’t have time to ask make this take long and he could already feel his stomach lurching slightly. This was a big step, he couldn’t back away from this moment. It set into motion everything.
“Yes… I need something.” Jarred said, the silent tone from Robert let him know the joke wasn’t nearly as funny as he thought it was. “I need you to come to the ship in a week, but before that… I need to ask something. I am… utterly in love with your daughter sir, and in a week I plan to propose to her. I want you here and I want your permission, but to be honest sir I don’t care if you say no I will ask her to marry me. I really just hope you will say yes cause I know I will feel much better about all of this if you do.” Jarred said, he wasn’t passive in anyway and as intimidating as Robert could be Jarred wasn’t a pushover himself.
“That all?” Robert said as he looked at Jarred with a sharper stare as the silence seemed to stagnate. Jarred nodded as he took a breath readying for a barrage of demands but found himself shocked at the words next. “It’s about damn time, a year together and you two should have been talking about this much sooner.” Robert replied as Jarred felt his jaw drop.
“Is… that a yes sir?” Jarred asked, he was trying hard to compose himself but he wasn’t certain how to take this. He somehow expected something far worse here.
“Yes, now… I will tell Halia, but I am not missing Gagh, she will want to call you. Prepare yourself, if you were worried about me she… well she is much more fierce than me.” Robert said as he had the smallest hint of a smile as he clicked off from the call leaving Jarred sitting in a stunned silence.
From behind him, the sound of steps could be heard. He was sure it had to be Lizzie and his parents as he looked back to see who was entering.

============“Who were you on the phone with we are going to…be....late. You aren’t wearing that are you,” Halia said slowly drawing out each word as she put in an earrings. His outfit was fine. It was just a convenient excuse as to why they were going to be late and. It the fact she hadn’t been ready. Klingons has short tempers anyway. Being late for a reservation was bound to put the maitre d’ in a foul temperament. Luckily her husband spent the past thirty years dealing with people in foul moods. He had survived his daughters teens years so a pissy Klingon was no match.
“What? You don’t like this? You bought it for me, you made me wear it to every damn dinner your mom asks us to go to. I swear I am not going to another one, that family home is horrid. I am not going to eat something she forgot a recipe to and taste half the flavor… she cooks with indifference Halia!” Robert said as he looked at her sternly as he moved beside her to kiss her on her cheek.
“Fine don’t change. You look alright and chef Otraw Ino will not hold our table past 7,” Halia acted like she had deftly negotiated a cantankerous diplomatic event.
“Damn right I look good… and the Klingons will be fine. What’s the worst they going to do make me fight to the death? I think we outlawed that anyway in federation space anyway.
“So who were you talking to,” she asked again fixing a stray hair in the mirror.
“That boy…” was all he said as he shook his head, he was clearly annoyed but there was the smallest of smiles on his face. Holding a secret like he had was a wonderful moment he got over his wife. He didn’t always get a chance to know something before her.
“Oh. Oh. Oh,” she said a bit more surprised with each word she uttered. “You mean Jarred and Kalani,” she said looked at her husband’s reflection in the mirror. It was not like she hadn’t met the man Kalani was seeing before. There was the official comm call where Kal had introduced him. The boy had seemed nice enough but slightly on edge. The second meeting was a little more relaxed but he had been called away twice due to a concern with the ship. Each time she saw more and more why her daughter loved him. The meetings after that Halia watched as the doting boyfriend turned into a typical boyfriend.
“No, not Kalani… just him.” Robert said as he walked into the bathroom as he began to shave and finish the last couple of things he had left to do. “You want to remind me again why we like him? Ex wife, former alcoholic, secret kid… I swear at times you have been giving him too many chances Halia.”
A few hello Robert And Halia’s tossed at the screen as he passed by to somewhere else within the quarters. This told Halia all was good in their relationship and Kalani was happy. When her daughter wasn’t happen with Mr. Alindor it was obvious.
“Is she okay,” Halia instantly went into mom mode. “Did she get bitten by that damn palooian spider thing again. You know I told her she needed to get rid of that thing. It is not cute with big eyes,” she grumbled clearly annoyed.
“Well there is something…” he said as he came from the bathroom as he saw his wife, looking her over the smallest of twinkles in his eyes.
“Then the Risan shrimp?”
“No nothing like that… she…” he said as she got cut off once again.
“Aldebaran mud leech?”
“A what? No woman she’s…”
“Cardassian mole,” she continued to fire off all the critters in that zoo of horrors.

“She’s fine woman, Jarred asked me if he could ask her to marry him.” he said, cutting the topic short there he didn’t seem like he wanted to add more details. He knew sometimes you just had to make a woman want more first before giving it to her.
