<SNIP>Approaching the CMO Daye cleared her throat. “I take it you are the new big dog around here,” she said with a smile. “I’m Natasha Daye. Welcome to the Saracen.”

He had taken a couple of steps into the disappointingly small room and turned as he heard footsteps behind him. He had briefly scanned the personnel files on the transport to Starbase 257, but personnel records were rarely representative of a persons reality. His certainly weren’t. He smiled warmly and extended his hand “Good morning, Doctor Daye, yes indeed, Doctor Nathaniel Harrison, a pleasure to be sure. I don’t stand on too much ceremony, come, sit, pull up a square inch”
He gestured to one of the two seats sitting before the sliver of replicated wood that laughingly called itself a desk, before taking a seat himself. He shuffled a little in the seat, once again realizing that he clearly wouldn’t be spending too much time in this office.
“Don’t mind if I do,” she said taking a seat. Giving him a smile, Daye decided to test out how the humor level of the new CMO. “Yes but you don’t have to walk ten feet to the replicator for a cup of coffee,” Daye laughed. “You can just sit in your chair and leeeeeeannnnn baaaackk,” she said as she extended a hand to the opening of the replicator. =/\= Computer give me eight ounces of coffee in a 24-ounce travel mug with cream and sugar=/\=. As the replicator made the drink, Natasha balanced it in a strange like yoga way back so that she was now sitting back upright with a drink in her hand.
“Try that with square feet,” she winked at him taking a sip of coffee.
He chuckled softly, “I do appreciate an optimist, Doctor. I doubt I’ll be spending too much time in here anyway. I have a heavy research schedule that usually keeps me in the lab most of the day beyond rounds and I tend to catch up with my administrative duties when I’m eating or off duty. It’s one of the reasons I make a point to always go to the mess hall for meals.”
Oh boy. Well, this is a good-bad thing Daye, she said to herself. Either this guy has won the Starfleet sarcasm award ten years running or he really doesn’t care about being the CMO. Either way, it is good news for you. He will stay out from underfoot and not have a billion and one plans to improve a perfectly capable department. You know how the new boss can be. They always think mixing things up is good. Since he wants a hands-off approach then things will stay the way they are and no one has to point out the old saying of why fix something that isn’t broken. This is gonna be a win win for the department she thought to herself.
He focused on Daye again, his smile returning. His voice contained no particular accent. It could best be described as lightly musical, or lilting “so, Doctor, assume i’m an idiot and give me a brief rundown of ship, crew and sickbay”
Doctor Nathaniel Harrison (CMO)
“Do you want the polite officer version or the NCO version? NCO’s know more about a ship than officer’s ever do unless you get in with them on the ground floor.” Natasha waited for his reply. She could answer the way he needed and his reply would tell her oodles about the man in front of her.

He leaned back in his chair… or attempted to before hitting the replicator and being knocked forward again. With a sniff of frustration, he stood up and gestured out the door “Why not take a stroll with me, before I get a reprimand in my file for misuse of a photon grenade.” Stepping out of sickbay entirely, given that he’d not found the time to really walk the generic Starfleet corridors of the Saracen yet, he set a meandering and unhurried pace before picking up their conversation again. “The officers version I can get from reports and personnel files. I want the boots on the ground copy. I want to know who is a useful research staffer, who is cool under fire, who has the best hands for surgical theater, who is a detriment to the team. Who are the troublemakers on the crew? Does the Captain evade his physicals like the plague? What are the most common cases that crop up? I want to hear it all..”
Doctor Nathaniel Harrison (CMO)
“I’m the captain’s live in as the crew puts it. I took this job from a position at Outpost 42 and there was no way we were gonna sneak around like a couple of cadets after hours. We have been together for 15 years and a series of missteps twice at the altar has us going for a third time down the aisle. We haven’t set a date for the old three’s times a charm wedding but I thought it would be best for you to know the 911 as they used to say on Earth. Ultimately that means he doesn’t miss any physicals because if he dont show up here he can’t come home and one can only last so long in a space suit before you need more oxygen,” she laughed wearing a smirk. “Dante runs a tight ship. He is capable and probably right up your alley with the whole by the book type of thing. I can’t say anyone is bad on the medical staff but I can tell you that Old Man Jenkins as we call Senior chief Jenkins comes down for a hangnail and looks to get a few days off any chance he gets. NE Chad Roberts has the steadiest hands I know but is still green being only two years out of the academy. Give him another five or six years and he will be after your square inch of an office. Nurse NE Felicity Longstreet has one of the sharpest tongues around. She is going to put you through the paces if you cross her but she is probably one of the most capable nurses I have ever met. The woman misses nothing that occurs in sickbay from an overlooked allergy to who is sleeping with who on the crew. If it happens on the ship the woman knows about it. I would not say it is a problem but the biggest medical issues we have had recently has been bat and snake bites from the vivarium. Ensign Kane has sent up what is equivalent to a floating zoo. You should check it out but beware. The Calpernia Caterpiller does have teeth and bites and this may or may not require suturing.. Any more questions,” she asked pushing him to the right down a hall. Well it was not a push exactly but more of a solid nudge in the direction Daye wanted him to go in.
“So my turn for the questions. Are you a beer drinker, tea tottler or can you handle something that puts hair on your chest? Are you a fan of large lizards? Do you have an undisclosed allergy that I am only going to find out one day at the most inconvenient time and place? The last question is if you were a superhero who do you most identify with,” Daye asked as she and the CMO entered the turbo and she programmed the transportation device to take her to the mess hall.
