DaVinci had been waiting for the results of the blood sample obtained from the dagger that the Volga’s crew had given them.Even though, the captain had his suspicions on who the attackers were, he was hoping the sample could confirm this. And because of this, he needed to discuss some options with the CMO.
The doors of sickbay swooshed open and closed as he stepped in. Moving directly to the doctor’s office, he rang the chime.
“Ally? It’s DaVinci. We need to talk.”
Captain Daniel “DaVinci” Colter
CO USS Saracen“What’s up,” Ally said looking at Colter with a slight edge to her tone. It was rare to see him here and even rarer for him to be looking for her on duty hours.

The CO stepped in and let the door close behind him As he sat down, he drew a deep breath.
“These people we’re up against, I’ve got suspicions on who they are. I’ve seen their tactics. . . .I’ve experienced . . .their tactics, about 400 years ago. And if it is them, we’ve got a tough job ahead of us. We’re going to need an edge.”
Captain Daniel “DaVinci” Colter
CO USS Saracen“You think they are Augments,” Ally stated more in surprise than a direct challenge to Colter’s assessment. The man was not one to jump to conclusions unless he had formed a hypothesis, proved it, and was just presenting the results.
“Okay if they are Augments, it is going to take more than a horse tranquilizer to take them down. The original Augments had a host of genetic alterations which essentially made my job obsolete in a sense. They are faster, stronger and have a vastly superior metabolism. They also have an immune system that is impervious to just about any bug, bacteria or virus however, you have me,” Ally said happily. “I will find something to take them out several different ways but they are fast. Inhalation is the fastest way past blood stream to get something into someone’s body. How long do I have to come up with my conk out cocktail?”
Ally Scott CMO
“As fast as you can, Ally. The bridge has detected some anomalies along our flight path. It could just be a blip, but I’m putting my money on somebody planning to stop us, maybe even try to take over the ship. I’m not gonna let that happen. Not my ship. Plus, there’s one more thing I need from you . . . . .”
“Anything,” Ally said immediately. Her response was faster than her head processing the request. Colter was the Captain so requesting was just a polite order. The two had known each other for years. She trusted him implicitly as he did her so this had to be a big request.
DaVinci hesitated with his next request, but dammit, if they were up against Augments, they were going to need any advantage they could get, even if it was in the morally gray area.
“Can you mix up a cocktail that will enhance our abilities? Strength, speed, stamina, durability. . . “
Ally raised a finger up as she began to put two and two together. It was not that she was saying no but more needing a moment to process what was about to be said. “Are you asking me to make some sort of Augment crack to dose the people on the ship with?”
”. . .I know I’m asking a lot from you, but we need to be able to fight them hand-to-hand if it comes down to it. I’ve fought them before. I got punched in the arm and broke half a dozen ribs. Something short term, something we can dose before going into a fight. . . .
Captain Daniel “DaVinci” Colter
CO USS Saracen“Essentially you are asking me to create Augments which is outlawed by every convention in the galaxy. Hell even the Naussicans don’t dabble in that shit. Orange is not my color and if I do this I could be wearing that forever.” The fact she was already talking about consequences meant she was not refusing his request. She crossed her arms over her chest but her mind was already thinking about the pharmacological pairings that would do what Colter was asking. Like a true woman, she just couldn’t say yes the first time.

“Think of it this way, Ally. You’re not making Augments. There is no genetic manipulation going on here. We’re not messing with DNA. You’re just increasing our own abilities to their limit, AND only temporary.”
“Well that is either by drugs or genetics,” she replied taking a deep breath.
DaVinci stood and leaned onto the front of her desk. “It’s a request, not an order. If you find it’s morally compromising, forget I asked. No harm, no foul. But, better than anyone on this ship, I KNOW what it’s going to take to stop them. We NEED every advantage we can get. “
She dropped her hands and moved around to her desk pulling out a small flask. Lifting the bottle to her teeth, she pulled out the cork and spit it on the desk in a very unladylike manner. “Oh I am going to do it,” she said taking a huge swig. “I just needed to be the lady that doth protest too much. That way when I do make us super soldiers you don’t think I was too eager to do it.” Passing the bottle to him, Ally added. “And you never have to think twice about asking me anything…ever. I mean that. I am with you through thick and thin.” Before the Saracen, Ally had only ever served on the Ogawa. It was a far different ship and she had not made the connections with the crew like she did this one.
The captain accepted the flask and took a swallow.
“I knew I could count on you, Ally. You don’t know how much I appreciate knowing you have my back. The same goes for you. I’ll always have your back as well.”
Reaching over to her desk she picked up a scrap piece of paper and scribbled IOU on it before handing it over to Colter. “Excellent here is the contract.” The tension was thick in the room but the small personal interactions between them added a bit of levity and security to the space. Sometimes matters were all rank and file with yes Sir’s and snappy salutes. Other times it was a quiet agreement between two friends were rank stayed outside four walls.
He turned and ran a hand through his hair. “Dammit, I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m pretty sure we’re up against Augments, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet.”
Captain Daniel “DaVinci” Colter
CO USS Saracen“It’s better to be safe than sorry,” she moved to the small couch in her office flopping down. Grabbing a throw blanket, Ally balled it up in her hands until it was a huge ball which she tossed onto the floor to make space for Colter. “It should only take me a few days. Crazy enough most of us have all the genes to be super people. It is just a matter of expressing them. Take us for example. I was blessed with sunny good looks and you the reflexes of a cobra.” She winked at him teasing the man. “We just take a little of this and a little of than and come out on the other side. For the record I don’t think you are wrong. The only people I have seen that moved like those soldiers were super soldiers.”

DaVinci leaned down and moved her leg slightly before plopping down beside her. Looking into her face, his hand stayed resting on her knee.
He sirked and added, “With that sunny disposition and looks enhanced, you’re going to be so sweet you might give someone diabetes.”
“Oh I will take them down to their knees with a myocardial infact wbefore they can grasp their chest and say “why Rachel why? Rachel by the way will be my diabolical alter name. Worked well enough when I was in the academy making poor choices on a shore leave.” She could not help but let out a laugh.
He took another draw from the flask and handed it back to her. “When we get this mess cleaned up, you know we’re gonna have to celebrate, because your little cocktail you mix up is going to work.”
Captain Daniel “DaVinci” Colter
CO USS SaracenDowning a large swig she coughed and held the flask loosely in her hands. “We are gonna party like a rockstar,” she half sang the sentence to the song. “I say we go with our souped up selves and do something none of us would do without it. Like base jumping but not with all the fancy equipment. More like they did in the old days where you strapped some silk to your back wrapped like oragami and pray to hell it opens from the tiny fabric straps attached to our bodies. You know live like Larry.” The kids show Spongebob had a lobster that was all brawn and little brawns. Many an episode the poor sponge would attempt daring things screaming “living like Larry” before failing miserably. She wasn’t sure Colter was around kids young enough to know the reference but Ally had nieces and nephews right in that range.

“Hahaha, kids still watch that? I’ve seen vids, but that show came out not too long after I left Earth. Right around the turn of the century . . . 20th century, that is.”
He grinned at her excitement while talking about risk-taking. “Surprisingly, I’ve never tried BASE jumping. Done tons of HALO jumps with the chute opening around the 2000 foot mark, but then you’ve got to open the shoot sooner when you’re falling around 150 mph. That’s part of the rush.”

“I only come off the ground as far as the waves take me,” Ally laughed. She surfed and while the wave could be high, it was soft water underneath and not unforgiving ground.
