DaVinci had been waiting for the results of the blood sample obtained from the dagger that the Volga’s crew had given them.

Even though, the captain had his suspicions on who the attackers were, he was hoping the sample could confirm this. And because of this, he needed to discuss some options with the CMO.

The doors of sickbay swooshed open and closed as he stepped in. Moving directly to the doctor’s office, he rang the chime.

“Ally? It’s DaVinci. We need to talk.”

“What’s up,” Ally said looking at Colter with a slight edge to her tone. It was rare to see him here and even rarer for him to be looking for her on duty hours.

The CO stepped in and let the door close behind him As he sat down, he drew a deep breath.

“These people we’re up against, I’ve got suspicions on who they are. I’ve seen their tactics. . . .I’ve experienced . . .their tactics, about 400 years ago. And if it is them, we’ve got a tough job ahead of us. We’re going to need an edge.”

“You think they are Augments,” Ally stated more in surprise than a direct challenge to Colter’s assessment. The man was not one to jump to conclusions unless he had formed a hypothesis, proved it, and was just presenting the results.

“Okay if they are Augments, it is going to take more than a horse tranquilizer to take them down. The original Augments had a host of genetic alterations which essentially made my job obsolete in a sense. They are faster, stronger and have a vastly superior metabolism. They also have an immune system that is impervious to just about any bug, bacteria or virus however, you have me,” Ally said happily. “I will find something to take them out several different ways but they are fast. Inhalation is the fastest way past blood stream to get something into someone’s body. How long do I have to come up with my conk out cocktail?”

“As fast as you can, Ally. The bridge has detected some anomalies along our flight path. It could just be a blip, but I’m putting my money on somebody planning to stop us, maybe even try to take over the ship. I’m not gonna let that happen. Not my ship. Plus, there’s one more thing I need from you . . . . .”

“Anything,” Ally said immediately. Her response was faster than her head processing the request. Colter was the Captain so requesting was just a polite order. The two had known each other for years. She trusted him implicitly as he did her so this had to be a big request.

DaVinci hesitated with his next request, but dammit, if they were up against Augments, they were going to need any advantage they could get, even if it was in the morally gray area.

“Can you mix up a cocktail that will enhance our abilities? Strength, speed, stamina, durability. . . “

Ally raised a finger up as she began to put two and two together. It was not that she was saying no but more needing a moment to process what was about to be said. “Are you asking me to make some sort of Augment crack to dose the people on the ship with?”

”. . .I know I’m asking a lot from you, but we need to be able to fight them hand-to-hand if it comes down to it. I’ve fought them before. I got punched in the arm and broke half a dozen ribs. Something short term, something we can dose before going into a fight. . . .

“Essentially you are asking me to create Augments which is outlawed by every convention in the galaxy. Hell even the Naussicans don’t dabble in that shit. Orange is not my color and if I do this I could be wearing that forever.” The fact she was already talking about consequences meant she was not refusing his request. She crossed her arms over her chest but her mind was already thinking about the pharmacological pairings that would do what Colter was asking. Like a true woman, she just couldn’t say yes the first time.
