Nyman shuffled down the hall, a small PaDD in hand. Classified information about his medical condition. The directions were clear, he was to report to medical ASAP and deliver the information while also undergoing his standard onboarding physical.

It somehow felt so… violating. Before he could skate by acting normal, hiding symptoms, only coming in when something serious happened. Now, he was to be essentially under constant medical observation. Monthly check-ins, detailed physicals, being poked and prodded and having everything recorded for medical research.

It was embarrassing. Especially for Vendorians, who often viewed such incurable conditions as weaknesses.

He took a deep breath before crossing the threshold into sickbay. Then, ignoring the pit in his stomach, he put on his best fake smile, approached once of the medical staff,

“Excuse me, ma’am, I’m looking for Dr. Allison Scott. Would you happen to know if she is available at the moment?”

“Mhmmm hmmm,” a deep but feminine voice stated from behind the nursing station along with a finger. Her head did not lift to meet the voice asking the question. The finger that was raised moved slowly as if directing the person’s gaze to a PaDD with the message. If you are reading this I am on break. Take seat. Nurse Washington was a standard in sickbay. She was a sassy black woman from Chicago and it radiated off her like a spiritual aura. It was not that Nurse Washington was angry or hostile. She was one of the most caring and considerate people on the ship as long as you didn’t rile her up or bother her during her holoshow: GalFlex’s Chad McNair Space Cop.

The sound from the show was loud enough for anyone listening to hear it. The camp dialogued explained the show in minimal sentences. What was more interesting was Nurse Washington’s comments. “Oh baby,” Nurse Washington said with a devilish tone to her words. “You can come to my Sickbay any day.” The scene played on with phaser shots ringing out and predictable crashes as Char McNair battled his way out of the predictable storyline with predictable bad guys.

Nurse Washington.

Todd must have been distracted, because he usually would have noticed something like that.

“Oh…sorry,” he whispered, before making his way over to an empty chair. He began nervously drumming his fingers against the PaDD. A brief thought occurred that maybe, if he just set it on the nurse’s station and left it would get lost, even though he technically delivered it.

He probably wouldn’t get away with it. So instead he sat and half listened to the holoshow.

He was familiar with the series. His first few weeks after entering into Federation custody, before officially applying for citizenship, he was kept at what was essentially a protection facility for defectors. There was very little to do there besides watch holoshows, read magazines, or do the same three jigsaw puzzles over and over. Not something he remembered fondly. But the show itself was okay. He even found himself making a game of predicting what the next line was going to be or what the next ‘plot twist’ was.

Shavonne Washington peeked up and saw Nyman’s interest in the show. Standing up, she put her hands on her ample hips and said in a deep soothing voice. “You Team McNair or that dastardly fella Sloanman Fell. I hope you are a fellow McNairian?” Her voice had a playful tone that while still had a deep sassy ring was no longer slightly sharp. Depending on his answer, Shavonne looked at the empty chair next to her and waited. If he was Team McNair, he would be invited over. If not, he could sit where he was.

Shavonne Washington

“Oh, yes ma’am, you could say I’m a fan,”
he said with a glint of a smile.

He wasn’t trying to trick her per se. For him, being friendly often meant blending in and doing what everyone else was. Even if you aren’t as interested as they are. He shuffled over and took a seat offered. Again mostly to be polite.

Shavonne was a holovid chatter, commenting all through the episode and at time yelling at the screen as if she could control the main character. Occasionally she asked for Nyman’s opinion about the episode. As it wrapped up, another officer walked into sickbay announcing his appointment and where the CMO was. This spurned a new exchange out of Nurse Washington.

“Yeah your appointment has been cancelled,” she replied glancing at the time. There was only one appointment left in the day and that was going to her new found friend Nyman.

“How I made it two weeks ago,” the crewman said sounding frustrated.

“Yeah and I am sorry about that. I can get you in two weeks from next Thursday,” she said pretending to look in the logs. Her action drew a scowl from the man as he stormed out of the space.

“Bed two,” she said looking at Nyman. “Ally,” she belted out in a loud and firm tone. “Your three o’clock is here and waitin’.”

Nurse Washington

“Thank you, ma’am,” Nyman said with a wink, exuding a mix of Midwest charm and Hollywood elegance,

“We should do this again sometime.”

“You watch Love Risan Style? We have a group that meets in the Lounge. I’ll put in a good word for you,” Washington said with a hearty laugh and warm smile.

He was only mildly interested in the show itself and more entertained by her passion for it. It was fascinating to watch. But he wasn’t trying to imply anything more. Sometimes he forgot that, as an above average looking man, people often perceived his genuine interest in getting to know someone better as ‘coming on to them’.

“Ally,” Washington belted out in a tone and volume that would do a drill sergeant proud.

With that, he left, sitting down on the bed. Anticipating the CMO.

“Oh my god Shavonne,” Ally stated coming into the room, “I said I would be right back.” Walking up to the desk, Ally engaged with Washington more like they were good friends versus doctor and nurse. “You don’t need to bellow in this space.”

“Hmmm mmhmmm,” Washington mumbled and pointed across the room to Nyman.

“Really,” Ally replied seeing him sitting there as she snagged a PaDD off the desk. Moving towards him, Ally had an extreme casualness to her. Her hair was pulled up into a ponytail that swung as she walked. She was far more tanned than one might expect a blonde haired, blue eyed girl to be whose job was on a starship in space. She had a pleasant smile that seemed to be more amused with the situation tan annoyed with it.

“Commander Nyman,” Ally read off the name of the chart. “Welcome aboard. I see you are our new manner guru and therapist.” Stealing a look over her shoulder at Shavonne, she let out a small laugh. “Please don’t leave here and send me an comms message about ettiquette and protocol. You saw how riled up she got when interrupted from her GalFlix show.” Ally meant it as a joke and hoped the new officer took it that way. Check in’s could be so formal and stiff. In Starfleet rank was everything and some people took it far more serious than others. She hoped he would sense the humor in the space but if he didn’t it would speak volumes about his command style.

“Ah, there would be no need for that, Doctor,” he said with a half-smile,

“Disciplinary complaints require extra paperwork, which I try to avoid at all cost. Besides, she let me sit in with her. That’s great for morale building.”

He almost forgotten about his very important delivery, and once remembered made a conscious effort not to draw attention to the PaDD he brought in. Maybe it would slip his mind again, no matter how unlikely that would be.

“So how about we get to getting this done,” Ally teased him some. “There is another episode coming on and I can either dawdle and get you out or sneak you out.” Running the tricorder over the Commander, Ally looked at the results coming in. “So anything pertinent you want to mention or is everything copesatic since your last check in?”
