Nyman shuffled down the hall, a small PaDD in hand. Classified information about his medical condition. The directions were clear, he was to report to medical ASAP and deliver the information while also undergoing his standard onboarding physical. It somehow felt so… violating. Before he could skate by acting normal, hiding symptoms, only coming in when something serious happened. Now, he was to be essentially under constant medical observation. Monthly check-ins, detailed physicals, being poked and prodded and having everything recorded for medical research.
It was embarrassing. Especially for Vendorians, who often viewed such incurable conditions as weaknesses.
He took a deep breath before crossing the threshold into sickbay. Then, ignoring the pit in his stomach, he put on his best fake smile, approached once of the medical staff,
“Excuse me, ma’am, I’m looking for Dr. Allison Scott. Would you happen to know if she is available at the moment?”

“Mhmmm hmmm,” a deep but feminine voice stated from behind the nursing station along with a finger. Her head did not lift to meet the voice asking the question. The finger that was raised moved slowly as if directing the person’s gaze to a PaDD with the message. If you are reading this I am on break. Take seat. Nurse Washington was a standard in sickbay. She was a sassy black woman from Chicago and it radiated off her like a spiritual aura. It was not that Nurse Washington was angry or hostile. She was one of the most caring and considerate people on the ship as long as you didn’t rile her up or bother her during her holoshow: GalFlex’s Chad McNair Space Cop.
The sound from the show was loud enough for anyone listening to hear it. The camp dialogued explained the show in minimal sentences. What was more interesting was Nurse Washington’s comments. “Oh baby,” Nurse Washington said with a devilish tone to her words. “You can come to my Sickbay any day.” The scene played on with phaser shots ringing out and predictable crashes as Char McNair battled his way out of the predictable storyline with predictable bad guys.
Nurse Washington.
Todd must have been distracted, because he usually would have noticed something like that.
“Oh…sorry,” he whispered, before making his way over to an empty chair. He began nervously drumming his fingers against the PaDD. A brief thought occurred that maybe, if he just set it on the nurse’s station and left it would get lost, even though he technically delivered it.
He probably wouldn’t get away with it. So instead he sat and half listened to the holoshow.
He was familiar with the series. His first few weeks after entering into Federation custody, before officially applying for citizenship, he was kept at what was essentially a protection facility for defectors. There was very little to do there besides watch holoshows, read magazines, or do the same three jigsaw puzzles over and over. Not something he remembered fondly. But the show itself was okay. He even found himself making a game of predicting what the next line was going to be or what the next ‘plot twist’ was.
