SNIP

She opened her mouth to protest and ended up laughing. If she had actually considered it, she couldn’t have said the last time she had.

Hie mention of the taffy made her screw her face up. “No worries. I never found a taste for it. But something tells me more than war will be raised if you decide to abscond with my ‘kilm’kach’*.” She slid the plates around making sure they both had access to all the dishes. “There… truce…” she smiled once more and wasn’t aware, that for a moment… she was actually flirting.

Sinclair, seemingly oblivious to the undertones of the Security Chief’s gesture, simply smiled and said “Truce. But I’m not kidding about the sticky toffee.” with a friendly chuckle. He then picked up one of the burgers in one hand and took a bite. He looked out the window thoughtfully as he chewed for a moment, and then poured a glass of tea, wiped his mouth with a napkin, and washed down the burger. Looking back at Sha, he said “So I need to ask you a question.” and his face became entirely serious. “And it’s important you answer me honestly. Ready?”

Sinclair, CNS

Sha took another bite of her food and watched him as he ate and looked out the window. There was something about him that made her want to open up to him. But he was also her coucilor. Such openness might not be a good thing.

When he suddenly asked her to answer honestly, she let her hand rest on the edge of the table. It was a physical trial to keep from tightening up and clenching her fist in anticipation. “I will do my best…” she managed to choke out without her voice cracking with the growl in the back of her mind that warned her she wasn’t about to like what came next.

Looking intently at her, he leaned forward and said very softly “I want the truth, ok? This is important.” and he squared himself up, set both hands on the table and said with a an expressionless face…

“Do you like rugby?” and then a tiny grin curled up one side of his mouth.

Sinclair, CNS

....Rugby…

Sinclair had just gotten her tied up in know about what he was going to ask… Then he asked about rugby.

It shocked her so thoroughly that her response came out almost stammered. “I.. Have no idea…”

Then she caught his grin and she used the tines of her fork to stay the back of his left hand. Not hard enough to mark, but enough to let him know she’d done it. “Rugby! That’s what you asked? How could you… You get me all....” She couldn’t even express how unnerved she had been by his lead in. Shaking her head as her heart slowed down and gathered herself again, she days the one thing that came to mind. “And you wonder why I’m leery of Councilors?”

The next but of food she took was hard to chew because she was not to laugh and think of killing him at the same time.

Sinclair looked at the fork pressed against his skin, but he didn’t flinch. Looking up, he said “Oh, I never wonder why folks are leery of my ilk. So I have to get my laughs where I can.” and then he pulled his hand away and took a bite of bangers. “You still didn’t answer the question, though. And that is telling, Chief… very telling.” and he chuckled.

Sinclair, CNS

She shook her head “No… it’s not…” She flashed a moment of guilt on her face before she took a breath and calmed herself. “And I did answer the question. I said I had no idea. That is an answer. Never seen or played the game. Couldn’t really tell you anything about it other than it’s a sport involving netted bats and balls. Cross between Soccer and Baseball.”

She looked at him and wondered how it was he could calm her and get under her skin all in the same moment?

Sinclair almost chocked on his food, but managed to wash it down before laughing. “Base… what? Oh no no no… Not at all. Rugby is a non-stop running and throwing game. No ‘netted bats’.” and he paused a second and said “Oh wait! You are thinking of lacrosse!” and then he chuckled some more. “Well, you have some research to do, it seems. But I think you’ll like it. It combines raw strength, finesse, and the ability to adapt to shifting conflict lines. Great sport.” and he took a drink. “You play anything?”

Sinclair, CNS

Sha didn’t exactly blush as much as her face just reddened. “Yes, lacrosse… Told you I had no idea.” As he explained his game, she laughed. “Strength, finesse and shifting combat lines… Sounds like a typical Klingon date.” She raised a curious eyebrow while watching his reaction. “Didn’t know you were that physical, Councilor.”

“Wasn’t always a Counselor, now was I?” he said with a smile.

She laughed and took another bite before continuing. “I don’t think I really play anything. I work, I spar, and… That’s about it.” As she said it out loud, it suddenly seemed very pathetic. But in her day day life it was just normal.

Sha
CoS

Sinclair’s brow furrowed in playful consternation. “Work, spar, and sleep? Oh no, no, no… that is a recipe for depression and boredom. You need something to engage in, to actually look forward to and enjoy. Not because it ‘fits’, but because it’s fun. For me, rugby. Love the game. Played when I was growing up. You know, I was actually offered a contract to play professionally?” The tone of his voice showed that he wasn’t bragging, he was just very excited. The fact that the man loved the game he was talking about was obvious.

Sinclair, CNS

She smiled and shook her head. “No you weren’t always a councilor. I remember.”

When he tsked her for lack of a social or active life outside work, she shrugged. “I look forward to the Holo deck spars. Fighting various enemies, or even myself, gives me insight and keeps me sharp.” Without realizing it, hey give almost sounded offended, like she was trying to defend her almost self imposed exile.

But it changed again and her face and vice eased up at hearing his excitement about the game. “Will you show me?” The words were before she realized it. Trying to recover, she looked down at her plate and shrugged. “I mean, I wouldn’t mind learning about it so at least I’ll know what your talking about.” She signed another but into her mouth suddenly feeling like maybe this ‘date’ has hadn’t been such a good idea without a much deeper background check into Sinclair. Then, at least, she’d have known about his love for a sport she’d barely heard of.

Cos

Sinclair pondered a moment and said “Sure. When do you normally spar on the holodeck? I can set up a training simulation, and then we can either play or watch a classic match, your call.”
