“Okay, if you unzip your jacket, I’m just going to press in specific areas. If anything feels tender, let me know.” She didn’t need to say she’d also feel Elmira’s pain, since that was likely obvious.

“All right,” Elmira unzipped her jacket to make it easier for the good doctor. Knowing it was futile to lie to an empath, she closed her eyes, waiting for her to hit a tender area.

Moving around the other side of the biobed, Satreya reached out and pressed with two fingertips along the neck vertebrae that were showing the irritation. She’d first press directly on the vertebra and then clockwise in a circle around them. Moving slowly, she made a note of any pain mentioned or felt.

Whenever Boja’s fingertips met the middle of the vertabrae, she seemed to cringe in mild pain. Each time, she would mention that area, and find the tenderness grew calmer the further she got from those points.

As Boja touched, her fingers gave off a very slight warmth, but whether or not O’Shea could feel it depended on how much the pain shifted her attention. “On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the worst pain you’ve ever felt, how would you rate this pain?”
