Charles stood back and observed the interaction. It seemed this was one of those rare occasions where he had nothing to say. Charles had noticed Jhalae’s tension and couldn’t help but feel that his impromptu introduction might have been to blame.

“Yes, it is true,” he said, nodding in agreement.

OOC: Mika, feel free to jump in before this bit, but thought I would just move it along a bit.

IC: Harri nodded to both of the Junior Officers. She felt slightly relieved that she had an experienced team on the ship, and hoped that the engineering back log wasn’t like the first ship she had been posted to as Chief Engineer.

“Well, shall we go for a quick tour then?” she asked the both of them. “I’ve read the specs, but it’s never quite the same as treading the decks.”

Jhalae nodded, her professional facade showing on her face, though inside she felt a flutter of nerves. This was her first encounter with Lieutenant Commander Sato, and she wanted to make a good impression. “Of course, ma’am,” she replied, her voice steady. “Right this way.”

As they moved through the engineering bay, Jhalae pointed out key systems and features. “Here we have the warp core, which we’ve recently upgraded to increase efficiency by ten percent. We’ve also reinforced the EPS conduits to handle the additional power load.” She gestured towards the rows of consoles and monitors that lined the walls. “These are our primary diagnostic panels. They allow us to monitor the ship’s systems in real-time and quickly identify any issues.” She paused as she turned to face Lieutenant Commander Sato, “I am sure I don’t need to point out everything to you. I don’t know about you, but the Saracen is my first Pendragon-Class starship and I found the layout a little different than what I used to.”

Sato had been nodding along as the Ensign gave her the tour of engineering. She recognised most of the systems from the schematics that she had studied prior to her assignment, however the guided tour was useful in putting things physically in their place.

“Oh, I’m a very visual learner,” she started, “I can look at ship schematics for hours on end, but nothing is better than a five minute familiarisation.” she flashed a smile. “And for some reason, Starfleet Engineers do like to try something new with every new ship design.”

“What would you say is your favourite part of Engineering?” she asked, aiming the question about both Jhalae and Charles-Louis.

“Well, being honest,” Charles replied, “This is the first ship I have worked on that has made extensive use of bio-neural gel pack networks. The response time is incredible. I understand it is standard for most Federation ships, but compared to the freighters I used to work on, it is remarkable to see in action.”

Harri nodded before turning to Jhalae. “How about you?”

Jhalae’s professional demeanor wavered for a moment as she pondered the question, her eyes scanning the bustling engineering bay. Her favorite part? There were so many she admired, but one stood out above the rest.

“Well Commander,” she began, her voice thoughtful, “I’d have to say it’s the warp core. The way it pulses with power, it’s like the heartbeat of the ship. You can feel it, almost like it’s alive, driving us forward through space.” She smiled slightly, a touch of genuine enthusiasm breaking through. “The Pendragon-Class warp core is a marvel. The efficiency upgrades we’ve implemented make it even more remarkable. It’s the first system I check in on every shift.”
Jhalae led them to a large transparent window that provided a perfect view of the warp core. “We’ve also been experimenting with some new modulation techniques to improve energy distribution. It’s still in the testing phase, but initial results are promising.” She looked over at Sato, gauging her reaction.

Sato had a wry smile on her face. She too found the warp core to be the equivalent of the soul of a ship, the pulsations sufficient random as a result of the matter/anti-matter flow that it gave the appearance of an organic, living system. But the smile was more in response to the passion coming through from the Ensign. She immediately knew she had a good team onboard the ship.

“Oh, those new modulation techniques sound interesting,” she said. “What’s next in the testing phase?” she asked.

Jhalae smiled, then said “The next step involves fine-tuning the phase alignment to minimize the harmonic interference we’ve been encountering,” she explained, moving closer to the control panel. She tapped a few commands, and a holographic display of the warp core’s modulation patterns flickered to life, casting a soft glow across their faces. “If we can stabilize these fluctuations, it should allow for a more consistent energy flow, especially during high-demand maneuvers.” She looked at her superior officer and said, “What do you think? I am sure you have more experience at this than I do.”

“That sounds really good!” Sato said, rather excitedly, impressed by Jhalae. This was exactly the reason she joined as engineer, putting new techniques into practice.

“You may find that different modulation waveforms result in reflections in the system that may cause more interference than they actually solve. I’m assuming you’re running computer simulations as part of this?” she asked.
