Emergency Preparedness Drill - Haruka Sato on USS Saracen

Allison Scott looked at her watch. She had sent a memorandum out several weeks ago to random crew members about the emergency preparedness medical drill. On the Ogawa, they had performed these drills a few times but every port was a medical emergency and no one tended to be shooting at them. On the Saracen, they had red alert drills for when people were shooting at them but never casualty drills. To her, this was the perfect combination of both and would give her staff a chance to see her not as the “other doctor” but the medical chief.

The alarm dinged on her watch and Ally hit the pre-recorded message programmed into the ship.

=/\=Lt. Commander Haruka Sato=/\= The artificial voice piped through his comm badge. It carried the slightly up beat voice of a woman. =/\=The Emergency Preparedness Drill is now commencing. You have been assigned a plasma burn. This is a chemical burn where your skin and/or eyes come in contact with a harsh irritant, such as acid or a base or plasma. Substances that cause chemical burns include Chlorine, Ammonia, Bleach, Acids, Bases, and plasma.

Your Symptoms can range from:

Redness, irritation, pain numbness or burning at the site of contact.
Formation of blisters or black dead skin at the contact site.
Vision changes if the chemical gets into the eyes.
Shortness of breath is inhaled.
Vomiting if ingested.
Low blood pressure resulting in faintness, weakness, dizziness
Shortness of breath or severe cough
Headache
Muscle twitching or seizures,
Cardiac arrest or irregular heartbeat

At the sound of the tone, please call the medical staff and report your injury. The range of symptoms are provided for you to pantomime the condition for the arriving doctor to triage. Thank you in advance for your time=/\=

Since receiving the initial memo sent out a couple of weeks ago, Sato had been plotting her performance. She always loved through her all in to a project, and this was no different. She was determined to make this a challenge for a medical staff; not one that was unfair, but one that was realistic. To help with that, she had co-opted one of her staff to assist.

=^= Sato to Ensign Ball, it’s time. =^= she stated plainly, before tapping a few commands into her console. The replicator in her office hummed to life, producing a variety of items that she grabbed hold of, and put in a utility bag. With everything replicated placed carefully in the bag, she headed into one of the Jefferies Tubes near her office; after all, something like a plasma burn was more likely to occur in one of the Saracen’s service ducts that a main passenger corridor.

Arriving at the, soon to be, scene of the accident, she took off one of the bulk head panels, exposing one of the EPS conduits. She shut down the conduit, rerouting power through other parts of the EPS network, whilst also disabling the monitoring system that would have caused an alert in Main Engineering. Instead, it would simply look like someone was conducting routine maintenance; maintenance that Sato had placed in the work log a few days previous.

Taking out a holoprojector, she fixed it on to the EPS conduit, and started the programme. Instantly the EPS conduit looked like it was back online, but this time with a large crack from which a jet of plasma shot out. The tube instantly filled with simulated heat; Sato knew it was going to get warm in here, however the holoprojector had been set up for the safeties to kick in once the temperature got above 40 degrees celsius. She tapped a command into her tricorder to pause the programme; she still had to get ready.

Stripping off her jacket, she pulled another one out of the utility bag. It was identical to the first, other than a large area of charing to the left arm, and down the left torso. She took out of the bag a couple of silicon patches that matched the charing, and placed them on her torso and arm. She put on the new jacket, before getting out a small bag of what looked like gelatinous blood. This wasn’t too bad a description, given that this was exactly what it was - at least, a synthetic version of blood that the replicator had provided. She opened the bag, slightly gagging at the tangy smell that originated; perhaps a little too realistic. Still, at least she wasn’t Ensign Ball. Covering her ‘wounds’ with the substance gave them a glistening look, complementing the charing.

At that moment, Ensign Ball came around the corner. “Chief,” he said, chuckling at Sato covered in her war wounds.

“Ensign,” she replied with a smile. “Are you ready?”

“Absolutely!” he said, waving his pint-sized bag of beige goo at Sato.

“Great, let’s do this then.” she said, positioning herself next to the frozen plasma flame that was sitting stationary in midair. She tapped on her tricorder again, and the flame came to life, dancing across the tube. The sound and the heat of the plasma fire resumed, and Sato could already feel herself warm up. “Oh, and remember, as much drama as you can muster!”

Ensign Ball tapped his comm badge. =^= Ball to Sickbay!! =^= cried out the Ensign, his voice shrill and unsteady. =^= Mu… Mu… Medical em… em… emergency! She’s on fire! Help! I don’t know what to do! =^=

Sato struggled to suppress a giggle.

A few moments went by, whilst nothing was heard on the comms channel. Sato grumble to herself as she flicked open a tricorder, and checked she hadn’t inadvertently turned off the communications.

“Well, the communications system seems to be working… just as well I’m not actually dying.” she said to Ensign Ball.

Ball sighed. “To think…” he started wistfully, “my talents as an actor fell on deaf hears, so sad…” he finished, before breaking out into a grin again. Taking a few seconds to compose himself, he tapped his comm badge again.

=^= Hello?! Sickbay?! Anyone there?! =^= he cried out again.
