Following introduction with the chief science officer, Tobias had one final reporting obligation before a full 24 hours off. Now in sickbay, he patiently awaited the attention of an on-duty nurse or doctor. His proactive approach to completing check-ins early reflected his enthusiasm and commitment to professionalism, eager to acquaint himself with the ship and its systems during the upcoming time off.

“Rax. Tobias Rax,” a voice called out. Sick bay was never too busy however for some reason today there seemed to be a rush in the office. A woman in about her mid-thirties called out the name before replacing the donut back into her mouth.

A man next to Tobias raised his hand and started to stand up. It was clear he was going to try and pass off himself as the man the doctor was calling out. The reason was not obvious. He did not seem to be hurt at all. At a casual glance, it would seem that he just wanted to jump the line.

Tobias was on the verge of rising when the individual seated beside him initiated the first move. Rising in tandem, Tobias followed suit, his movements carrying a subtle awkwardness, possibly rooted in confusion. “Excuse me, sir,” Tobias ventured, his tone infused with a diplomatic touch and a hint of underlying anxiety.

“I believe there might be a miscommunication. The name called was Tobias Rax, and unless, in an exceedingly rare instance, we happen to share the same name, I believe the call was intended for me.”

“If you sit down there is a twenty credit chip in it for you,” the man said through the corner of his mouth. “I have two dates tonight and to go to both of them I need to get through this sick bay thing first.” The confidence of the Ensign next to Tobias was clearly evident. “Normally these things take forever so be a pal. Sit down, let me take this and when I get to the med bed I can do the whole opps thing.”

“Tobias,” the doctor repeated again elongating the name as she finished the bite of her donut as she walked towards the two men. Holding out the donut she gestured between them. “Are you both attached in some Trill way I have not learned about or am I supposed to guess which one of you is Rax” she pretended to inspect them visually them before taking another bite of her donut.

A twenty-credit chip? Who did this person think he was, attempting to sway a Starfleet officer with mere credits? And who cares if he had two dates? Lucky for some! Tobias hadn’t been involved in a romantic affair since… well, since who cares! He was here for his medical, as instructed at the time.

“I apologize, but we most certainly are not joined together, and it’s quite evident that I am Tobias Rax, Ensign, and Trill,” he asserted, gesturing towards the faint marks on his head. The lingering scent of sugar from the woman’s doughnut only heightened his annoyance. Closing his eyes and taking a breath, he continued, “So, please wait your turn, and your… ‘dates’ can wait,” he emphasized the word ‘dates’ with a hint of disdain.

Ensign Rax’s reaction in the moment made the doctor far more intrigued. The man attempting to pay him off was not Ensign Rax, however, the politeness to which Rax was attempting to deal with him showed a strength of character not common in someone so young. Maybe it was the Trill symbiote influence. “Dates,” Nat did react to that word. Tobias did not seem the type to be playing the field unlike the person next to him with the devil may care smile tipping the corners of his lips.

“So are you both vying to get through the line faster because you have some smitten Ensign waiting for you in the lounge?” Rax never stated he didn’t have a date. Only that the man next to him seemed to be playing the field.

Tobias, his expression now a mix of bewilderment and irritation, declared emphatically, “No! I am not vying for any woman’s affection, and I certainly do not have an ensign smitten. I am simply here to undergo my onboarding medical exam so I can carry out my duties aboard this ship.” He explained with a firm tone, “I am Trill, I am Tobias Rax. I have no knowledge of who this person is or why they believe they have the right to cut in line simply to go gallivanting with some female!”

Natasha liked this Ensign. He was firey but remained within polite parameters. He was not utterly destroying the man next to him but allowing the man to come clean. He was exactly the kind of officer the Saracen needed. The evil part of her however wanted to see how far he would go. Check in’s tended to be blah blah this and yada yada that. It would get to that point but for now she took another avenue. Pulling a tricorder out of her pocket she scanned Tobias and to be far the man next to him.

“You are Trill,” she stated in a tone that showed she was finding the situation amusing. “As to one’s galavanting status,” she hit the tricorder a few times on her palm as if it were broken. “The device is unfortunately not able to read that. Think of how beneficial it would be to the individual being galavanting upon if it did.” She could not help but smile at her own joke. “I will say your,” she pointed the device at Tobias, “blood pressure is elevated even though you are controlling it well.”

Contemplating whether he had become the target of a terrible joke or if the medical staff aboard the ship were as inept as a Ferengi attempting charity work, Tobias muttered, “I think anyone’s blood pressure would be higher than usual when having to deal with such circumstances,” his words tinged with frustration as he half-gritted his teeth. He pondered if his Trill markings were betraying a shade of red, reflecting his annoyance.

“Please,” he implored, attempting to release the pent-up annoyance like a valve before steam started escaping his ears. “Can I be checked in for my preliminary medical examination? This person seems to lack boundaries and evidently slipped through the net at the academy. And, of course, tricorders can’t detect galavanting because they’re instruments for science and medicine, not emotional Geiger counters.” He couldn’t help but wonder if the so-called nurse even knew how to use the damned thing.

“You are a firey one,” Nat laughed and nodded towards an open bed.

“Yo Doc,” the imposter called out. “Seriously?” Tapping his wrist he shrugged slightly with a lopsided smile.

Natasha ignored him and walked behind Tobias to start his exam. “Your friend there is quite a handful. Luckily you both aren’t in the same department or I think I might get a call to clean up a homicide. Don’t worry. I will take care of him later. So where did you come from Ensign Tobias Rex,” Nat said scanning him with the tricorder for a purpose.

Tobias experienced a wave of relief as the situation moved forward. Still perplexed by the nurse’s peculiar notion of a potential homicide, he cast another glance over his shoulder in disbelief. Surely not on a starship?

Shaking off his thoughts, he moved his attention to the ongoing conversation and managed a smile at the shift in topic. “I was born on Trill but spent most of my life on Earth,” he explained now really looking at the nurse.

Tobias observed the nurse, taking in the details of her appearance. Her hair, a rich dark brown bordering on black, cascaded down in a thick and lengthy flow, settling gracefully at the base of her shoulders. His gaze shifted to her eyes, a captivating light green adorned with golden flecks around the pupils, complemented by dark, expressive lashes.

Noticing her fair skin, he realised she had that type that easily tanned or burned bright red. “You look familiar” he said finally trying to recall where he may have seen her face before.

“Do I,” she returned a sly smile. “Are you sure you are not the silver tongued cassanova instead of your friend back there or are Trills naturally this charming?” Before the poor Ensign could reply however there was a strange sensation on his leg. The initial sensation started at the top of his inner thigh and then seems to trail all the way down to his ankle. It had the width and pressure of a tail but unless the doc had suddenly turned into a Caitlin her hands were clearly visible on the Padd and tricorder. Almost as fast as he felt the sudden sensation it moved to the other leg creating the same effect on his leg.

Doc on duty

While the sensation on Rax’s leg was happening, a very large Klingon wearing the medical blue of Starfleet walked up behind Natasha. Aside from his height and build that was designed more for throwing P’taq’s off of high buildings, it was also notable that the Klingon was wearing a Sash denoting a House Rank of no less than Ships Captain, fingerless gloves complete with metal studs on the knuckles and a deadly looking dagger at his waist bearing the same symbol that was emblazoned on both the sash and the metal eyepatch that was stapled to the skin around his left eye. He was also shaved bald, with a short black beard twisted into braids with metal beads of different materials and colors.

“Dok-tor,” the Klingon pronounced in a formal, clipped yet accented English, “Let me look after the other one,” his lone eye picked out the ‘imposter Rax’ and the smile he sent in the mans direction may have been the same kind he sent to his opponents during training sessions on the holodeck. “I believe he is in need of a full examination, considering his attempt to masquerade as another crew member. Remember the Klingon medical motto of ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. Heh-heh-heh.” The laugh was quiet and slow and carried on as he stepped away towards the next patient.

“Alright, Starfleet.” the big Klingon addressed the fake Rax at the next biobed. “I am Do’trahk of House Kholl, an Exchange Medical Officer from the Klingon Medical Council, and I will be your Doctor for today. We are clearing you for duty, yes?” reaching to the side, he picked up a pair or rubber gloves and slipped them over his hands, notably, also over the thick metal studded fingerless gloves he was wearing. “Lets get you checked out then, hmmmm?” He snapped the edge of the gloves with an ungodly smack and the big Klingon turned his head and looked directly at Natasha. “Computer, raise Audio Isolation Shield around Biobed Three,” he said and then reached up for the curtain that would provide some privacy for the patient, wiggling his fingers as he pulled the curtain across and making both he and fake Rax disappear from sight.

Do’trahk of House Kholl

Amidst the emergence of the Klingon, who appeared poised to carry out some medieval-style punishment to the line-cutter, Tobias couldn’t help but feel a wave of pity towards him. He questioned whether this medical bay and its team were woefully lacking in proper training, already vowing to steer clear of it in the future. Watching as the Klingon donned surgical gloves and activated an audio isolation shield, Tobias’s imagination ran wild with dreadful possibilities. The scene unfolding around him felt more like a chaotic Earth sitcom than a functional Starfleet vessel.

His thoughts were abruptly interrupted as he felt a strange sensation between his legs again. Startled, he sprang up from the bed, scanning the area in confusion. “What on Trill is going on here, Doctor?” he finally exclaimed, his composure slipping as he frantically searched for the source of the sensation. “Klingons conducting who-knows-what, personnel munching on sugary confections while on duty, and now… whatever that is!?” he demanded, his frustration evident in his voice.

Before Natasha could respond the sensation on his leg became far more aggressive as Bruce the Captain’s pet monitor lizard scampered up Rex’s leg like a scaffold. The lizard did not seem to care if he was invited or not. Plopping himself up on Rex’s lap he balanced on the man’s knees eyeing Natasha with a concentrated stare. So we meet again. Ah precious donut. You can not avoid me in that white lab coat pocket she slipped you into. Come out. Come out to Brucie. I won’t hurt you. As Bruce monologued his tail seemed to wag, much like a dog, back and forth with happiness. Depending on how far Rex was leaning back, the tail could be either slapping the sides of the man’s nose or be just in front of it.

“Bruce get down,” Natasha snapped her fingers and spoke in a firm tone. It was met by Bruce dropping his butt and now sitting on Rex’s lap instead of balancing on it like the Trill’s legs were two tight ropes.

Tobias felt a surge of panic as he glanced down to find a reptilian creature perched on his legs. Frozen in disbelief, he couldn’t fathom why such a creature would be onboard the ship, let alone why it had chosen to make itself comfortable on his lap.

“Doctor, please,” he managed to say, his voice betraying a mix of uncertainty and annoyance. “Remove… this… creature,” he requested, trying his best to remain still despite the creeping unease.

Creature Bruce thought turning his body to stare into the spotted human’s eyes. Creature. I will have you know I am the first-born son of the captain. Flicking his tongue Bruce held the stare long enough hoping that the sentient currently holding him up would feel some remorse and maybe a bit of trepidation. The man should welcome the chance to make friends with him and not resort to treating him like some common house pet.

In that moment, he cared little for the reptile’s name or its origin; all he wanted was for it to be removed from his presence. If it could be controlled, he reasoned, it had no place on the ship.

“Bruce,” Natasha said pulling the creature off of Tobias. “Do I need to call your father?”

Why yes mom. Maybe he could give his ensign a few words about

His sentence was cut short as Natasha dumped him on the floor before pulling a ball out of her pocket. Tossing it down the hall into her office the lizard no longer seemed to care about anything other than the red orb as it scuttled after it.

“God I am sorry about that. Dante hatched Bruce from an egg when he was back in the academy. If you like dogs you will love him. If you don’t well you are pretty much screwed,” the doc replied with a smile. “Okay,” she looked at the tricorder with a deep sigh. “So any issues I should know about that don’t involve reptiles, or cheeky people trying to cut in front of you in line?”

CMO

“Thanks,” Tobias said, grateful as she removed the creature named Bruce from him. He did find humour in the situation and chuckled at the exchange between Natasha and Bruce, finding it amusing despite the interruption. As she turned her attention back to his medical scan, he shook his head. “No issues, Doctor. Just the usual adjustments to life aboard a starship,” he said with a grin, trying to lighten the mood.

Seeing that everything was on the up and up and this was just a technicality as a check in, Natasha signed the PaDD and got a mischievous smile. “So since you have been an exceedingly good sport about today what if you help me teach your studly friend a lesson about screwing around in my sick bay. Chilorian Chicken pox or Levodian Flu? Both will earn him three days of quarantine.” Natasha waited wondering how far Rax’s humor extended and what he felt was a good payback for a prank.

Natasha Knight CMO

Tobias leaned back, a playful glint in his eyes as she proposed her plan for payback. He pretended to consider it for a moment, tapping his chin in mock thoughtfulness. “Hmm, tempting offer, Doctor. But I think I’ll have to pass on that one,” he replied with a chuckle. “You see, I have a feeling your Klingon colleague is already taking care of that. I’m pretty sure I heard ‘Sound suppressing forcefield’ and caught some rubber gloves. I wouldn’t want to interfere with his plans.” he chuckled, “So you said my sickbay, you are the chief medical officer?” He felt embarrassed to not have recognised her.

“Yes I am and I am also the Cappy’s better half. I always warn people about that just so they know if I don’t clear them for duty, to be careful when calling me a black-hearted Cossack bent on the destruction of their career.” She paused long enough to maybe make Tobias sweat for a moment.

“Not that I am not going to pass you but your compatriot is probably not going to get a pass. We don’t dick with our own,” she tapped the PaDD and signed it with a flourish. “The guy you came in with is on his way out. He is being transferred next week so he is not longer an us like you but a them.”

Natasha Knight CMO

Tobias paused for a moment, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Well, I’ll keep that in mind. I’d rather not be the one volunteering for any transporter experiments,” he quipped, his chuckle adding a lightness to the conversation. “And as for my toes and fingers, tare hey’re all present and accounted for? No missing parts or peculiar ailments?” he added, a note of assurance in his voice, confident in his recent clean bill of health from the academy.
