Finally she opened her eyes and looked at him. “I’ve been trying to avoid being in the system unless I’m needed there, but it’s hard to just be out and about on the ship. Doctor Boja says I’m free to be in Sickbay whenever I like, but… I’m not a doctor and I don’t want to step on people’s toes. I just feel a bit lost, aimless. I don’t know where to go.” She could hang out in the holodeck, but the times when it’s free were few and there were a lot of crew who needed to make use of it. Some were tolerant of her popping in, but she wasn’t going to push her luck.

Sinclair didn’t move his hands and looked directly at her, a small smile on his face that seemed to say everything was going to be all right. “Ok, that’s an important bit, right there.” he replied. “So let me ask you this. If you could have any job on this ship, any job at all, what would it be?” He knew that if he could get her to start identifying herself as more of a ‘person’ than a simulation of one, she would start to feel better. And once they got her to that point, then they could begin trying to work the rest.

The temptation was to move her hands, and she even twitched slightly as she thought about it, but his gaze kept her in place for the time being. “Well, though I was a scientist before, jumping back into biology studies or something else doesn’t hold the same appeal.” Cori shook her head slightly. “I don’t really know.” She was being honest too. It wasn’t something she had given much thought, because despite her ability to pitch in on any given situation, having a set ‘role’ on the ship seemed weirdly far-fetched. And even if she did, what could she do that would hold her interest now? Well, there were elements of the cosmos that would always be intriguing.

“Do you want to be a scientists again? I would think that you would be in an ideal position for such pursuits. Granted, this isn’t a science vessel, but it is still a platform for discovery. A platform you know more intimately than anyone. Perhaps we could look at your current situation as less of a negative and more of a… ‘lab’, maybe? How does that sound to you?” he asked. He still had not moved his hands, nor taken his gaze from her. He was relieved to see her engaging with him on a personal level. That showed that she was open to discussion, and that was key.
