DaVinci turned away from the computer monitor and rubbed his eyes withe the heels of his hands. It had been a long day meeting the new faces on the Saracen, the faces that had not been there when he left. There was one last name on the list and the XO was determined to get this task finished before his shift was over.
=^=Ltjg. Foster, this is Cmdr. Colter. If you’re not too busy at the moment, olease report to my office.=^=
He leaned back, closed his ice and imagined how good a colf beer was going to taste after his day was done.
Colter (XO/CIO)
=On my way, Commander,=^= Foster called out. The XO would hear a slight echo in the background, suggesting that the COS was in a more confined area. “Computer, reroute lift to XO’s office,” Nicholas said as they were approaching their previous destination. The freshly minted JG had only taken the position as Security Chief after his predecessor was reassigned without notice.
Nick didn’t have the previsit jitters that newer officers were known to have, he just wanted whatever meeting that was planned to be over. LtJG Foster smiled and nodded at an Engineering Lt, as they both approached either end of the XO’s door. Though, while Foster stopped, the Lieutenant continued on. Nicholas pressed the chime and waited to be called in.
Foster
COS“Enter,” came the XO’s gravelly voice from the other side of the door.
The door swooshed open as Foster entered. He would see the gladiator sized XO sitting behind his desk, surrounded my 20th century Earth military memorabilia. The collection included replicated facsimiles of the honors, ribbons, certifications and weapons that DaVinci had earned/used during his time in the US Army.
The glass display behind Colter included a Bronze Star, 2 Silver Stars, a Medal of Honor, a Distinguished Service Cross, and a number of Purple Hearts. Hanging on the wall to Colter’s left was an M24 Sniper rifle. To the right, an M4A1 Carbine and Colt M1911a1 pistol. On his desk was a memorial photo of 125 soldiers who went into space on the SS Aurora, in an effort to chase down Khan Noonien Singh.
DaVinci stood and extended his right hand as the security chief came forward. “Lt. Foster, please , have a seat.”
Colter (X0/CIO)
Nicholas took a look around at the impressive sight before him and took a seat. The Security Chief was really fascinated with the ancient weapons their ancestors used hundreds of years ago. After a moment of silence and admiration of the relics around the room, the COS turned back to the XO. ” You must like history, Commander?”.
DaVinci turned to look at the items behind him for a moment, reminiscing of days, no, centuries gone by. “What you consider history, Lt., is part of my life. The weapons are what I used to try to stop Khan during the Eugenics War.”
Seeing the questioning expression on Foster’s face, the XO continued. “My first trip into space was in 1996. Spent 400+ years in cryogenic suspended animation before waking up in this time. It’s kind of a long story that I’ll share with you sometime, but my reasoning for calling you here is-----“
At that moment, the XO’s comm sounded and a familiar voice came through.
=/\= Commander Colter, this is your Captain speaking. I believe you are currently in your Office. Are you busy with anything super important? I believe that we have approximately 15 minutes left on Duty. =/\=
Knight, CO
Foster
COS=^=Yes, I am, Skipper. I’m having a conversation with Lt. Foster, our security chief. He came aboard during my time away. He’s one of the new faces I need t get to know.. I can postpone it if you need me right away?”
Colter (XO/CIO)
=/\= Not at all Commander, carry on what you are doing and this can wait. I am simply touching base to prepare to launch Project Peroni once the formalities of a day on Duty are over and have some time before I am required to Present Arms to Lieutenant Commander Knight for dinner. Let me know after your meeting if you are available, and perhaps Lieutenant Foster would be interested in the project as well. Knight out. =/\=
Colter raised a questioning eyebrow and mouthed the words the captain had said. “Project Peroni?” =^=I’ll ask him if he’d be interested, skipper. . . . . =^=
With that, the comm closed down leaving the two Officers alone, back in their meeting.
Knight, CO
”. . . . once we figure out what Project Peroni is supposed to mean.”
Nicholas cocked his head and raised a brow, “Project Peroni, as in Pepperoni?” The Security Chief asked with some amusement. LtJG Foster was intrigued with whether or not there was a project naming committee or if the person who created the project chose the name. That would be a question for another day, though.
Foster
COS“Your guess is as good as mine, Lt. Geez, for a moment, I thought he said Project Peyronie, as in ‘Peyronie’s Disease’. I’m glad he cut that comm off. I was about to suggest that he bring that project up with his wife/doctor. Definitely not something he needs to discuss with me, or you!!”
After a slight chuckle, he got back to the matter at hand. “As I was saying, the reason I called you here, Lt. is to give me a chance to get to know you. You weren’t here yet when I got called away on a personal matter. So, you were a new face by the time I got back. Now, I could read everything in your file and learn everything about you, but that doesn’t tell me WHO you are. i prefer a personal chat to do that.”
Colter (XO?CIO)
Nicholas shrugged his shoulders in response. “You as well as anybody knows that the academy consumes your lift for the 4 years you’re there, Commander,” The Security Chief stated. Between the numerous classes, exams, and practicals, there wasn’t much of a life outside R&R in the dom room or common areas. “I guess, just ask the questions, and I’ll answer with what comes to mind, sir”.
