Jhalae was struggling to understand how everything worked. It had never been her intention to become a department head and have the responsibility of supervising officers. She had hoped for a more carefree and unburdened tour of duty aboard the Saracen. As she sat at the Chief Engineer’s desk, now her own at least for the time being, she glanced at the PaDD in front of her. She noticed that there was a new Ensign on board named Charles-Louis, whom she needed to check in with. Taking a deep breath, she inhaled through her nostrils and exhaled slowly through her mouth, whispering to herself, “Okay.” Gathering her composure, she activated her comm badge and initiated a call to Charles-Louis, saying, =^=Ynuchausti to Louis. When you have a moment, I would like to speak with you.=^=

The call came in while Charles was just about to sit down and enjoy his freshly replicated lunch. He grumbled to himself. Usually, the boss doesn’t want you in their office unless you messed something up. Still, you don’t ignore a call like that, not from the Chief of Engineering, acting or not.

=^= On my way, Ynuchausti=^= Charles responded, putting on a nonchalant tone.

After a few moments, Charles-Louis was standing at the entrance of the office, and rang the chime to indicate his presence. Standing at attention he began to run over everything he had done that shift to anticipate why he was called up so unexpectedly.

Jhalae looked up from her desk as she heard the chime. She took a moment to calm her nerves.
As Charles-Louis entered the office, Jhalae offered a friendly smile and began”Please have a seat,” she said, trying to sound welcoming and reassuring.”Thank you for coming, Ensign. I wanted to speak with you about your recent arrival aboard the Saracen. How are you finding your new assignment so far?”
