The thrum of the ship’s engines vibrated through the deck and up through the Legate’s feet. The U.S.S. Saracen was distant in the blue miasma and coming about. For the better part of an hour it had been running sensor sweeps and picking the remains of the B’hari. He’d hoped they would find nothing, but the Federation tended to be nothing if not tenacious at times. The Dominion War proved that, he thought bitterly. So far this little excursion had been quite lucrative. Of course, they were going to butt heads with Starfleet at some point. A little longer would have been nice. At least keeping an eye on the Saracen had been entertaining.
An alert sounded from nearby, followed by his communications officer speaking up. “Message from Varga.”
“Put it on,” the legate ordered begrudgingly. “Yes, Varga?”
“Are they gone yet?”
“No. Not yet. You ready to pull up stakes?”
“Sure. But it’s not like I want to.”“Yes, well… we don’t always get what we want. I’ll keep them busy.” With the touch of a button he cut the call. “Have we located their black box?”
“Affirmative.”
“Come about and prepare to transport it aboard.”
“Sir! Are you sure that’s wise?”
“Better they see us and only us. Besides, they’re on the way to recover the box anyway. If they grab it this whole operation is scrubbed. At least if it’s just us, we have plausible deniability.”A few moments later another small alert sounded. His tactical officer chirped, “They’re charging weapons and painting us.”
“Oh goodie,” the Legate muttered.
“Legate, the Saracen is hailing us.”
“Ooof course they are. Trust the Federation to want to talk everything to death.”
“They’re demanding our identification and for us to stand down and back away from the box.”Quietly he pondered his options. Of course, they could stand down. But that would likely result in visiting a Federation penal colony. Depending on how things went. They could cloak and run. That wasn’t exactly a great taste in his mouth either. At the same time, it wasn’t like they even knew what they had out here. Or did they? More possibilities scrolled through his head.
“Lock onto the box.” He thought about it for a moment. “And prepare our third contingency.”
The bridge crew glanced between each other, each filled with concern, but maybe the Legate knew what he was doing. “Box locked, and loading the special now.”
“Open a channel to the Saracen.”

OOC: I love this, nicely written!

Thanks. I’ve been itching to actually write stuff that’s going on out of the crew’s purvue. But didn’t want to give anything away. But this seemed like a perfect moment to throw in some seasoning.
