Charles arrived promptly to the CNS office for his onboarding appointment. It was important to make a good first impression with the senior staff. Besides, the sooner he could be done with the appointment, the sooner he could get to work. He had been reviewing the schematics and the operations manuals for Pendragon class ships, but was eager to finally see these systems in action. All he had to do was talk to a counselor for about 30 minutes or so.[Ensign Charles-Louis, Engineering]
Sheleah had just finished a late lunch and bath day for Rex therefore she was just getting back tot he office around the time Charles arrived himself.
“Well hello up there. You must be my after lunch appointment. Come in and have a seat.” she gestured and stepped into her office.
- Sheleah, CNS/DO
“Yes, I am Ensign Charles-Louis, as you have discerned.” he said, following Sheleah into the office at a leisurely pace. He paced around the room for a bit, quietly examining if there was anything of interest on display in the office. Finally he made his way over to the chair that would guessed would be opposite hers.
There was a slight thud as Charles sat down on it. It seemed to squeak in protest as he adjusted to a comfortable position. He had to flex his knees outward slightly in order to fit on the chair. Once settled, his attention snapped by to the Lieutenant.
“ It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lieutenant.” he said with what was supposed to be a friendly smile.

Sheleah thought the scene quite comical and would certainly laugh aobut it later.
“If you would be more comfortable here on the couch I would be very happy to join you. I find that after a big lunch, I personally prefer it to sitting behind my desk.”
Sheleah picked up a few things from her desk, walked to her couch, and sat down. Her office consisted of the standard desk and chair set up with a small couch and large cat tree on one side and a small book shelf and windchimes on the other.
- Sheleah, CNS/DO
“Non, merci,” Charles insisted, “I will be fine sitting here.” Perhaps this was due to some sense of pride, or just to put a respectful distance between him and his superior officer. Charles watched her sit down on the couch, uncharacteristically quite. After a pause he started to speak,
“You have a pet, yes?” Charles asked, nodding toward the cat tree.

Sheleah nodded and smiled. THis was one of the few times Rex was not in the office. After his bath, he loved a long play date with one of the friends he had made aboard ship so, she tried to schedule that whenever possible.
“Yes I do. My Ocelot, Rex, is at a friend’s quarters probably chasing little red balls and napping by now. On the corner of my desk is a holocube with a lot of pictures. Feel free to take a look if you like. Please, I’m very curious to find out about your academy days.”
- Sheleah, CNS/DO
Charles reached over to her desk, chair squeaking underneath him with every moment. He helped himself to the holocube and casually scrolled through the pictures as he talked.
“Ah, yes. Well, I went through just like everyone else, in Marseille. Though I was not expecting so many… children.”
He let out a small laugh. “It is true I was older than the majority in my classes. That was to be expected. That is not to say that a younger person could not be an exceptional officer, no. But the material they were teaching was definitely more appropriate for the younger ones. I found some of the information redundant.”
[Ensign Charles-Louis, Engineering]
Pictures on the cube would show Rex at various ages doing various feline things. Playing with toys, enjoying spots of sunlight, lounging on anything, and just generally being adorable.
Charles smiled slightly, amused by the images.
“And where were you before the academy?” she asked.
- Sheleah, CNS/DO
“I am originally from the Mempa Sector.” Charles responded, bringing his attention away from the cube.
“I worked with my father doing working on mostly civilian starships. Tour shuttles, mining vessels, independent freighters and the like.” Charles leaned back and crossed his arms, continuing to stress out the poor chair.
“I have been working on starships in some way or another for the last … maybe 30 years? And I’ve been studying computer networks for almost 25. Mostly through practice.” He sighed. It was unclear if he was proud of that fact or embarrassed.
[Ensign Charles-Louis, Engineering]
Sheleah made a mental note to have Engineering replace her furnishings with ones that could take higher stress.
“So, I’m guessing you prefer the real world experience to your academy training? I know it’s an unprofessional assumption but I certainly preferred mine.”
- Sheleah, CNS/DO
Charles let out a slight chuckle,
“Especially for someone like you, Counselor, I am not that difficult to figure out. That is not to say I did not learn anything from my experience at the academy, no not at all. I had plenty to learn about the … eh, how do you say it?”
Charles thought for a moment for the correct word. He snapped his fingers while thinking.
“When you have to write everything you are doing…Documentation!” Charles perked up.
“Yes, that is it, proper documentation protocols. Very… very unique to Star Fleet, as opposed to the more independent work my father and I did.”
[Ensign Charles-Louis, Engineering]
Sheleah knew that not everybody was in the habit of keeping the detailed records most people in Star Fleet were obsessed with.
“Yes, even I find documentation to be frustrating at times. When it comes to my work it’s absolutely necessary and I’m certain it is with yours, you just have to find a way to do it that will benefit you and make it seem like less of a chore.”
- Sheleah, CNS/DO
“That is true,” Charles said with a nod. There was much for Charles-Louis to learn, which was difficult. He was used to being the expert, at least in his field. Charles seemed to realize he was still holding the cube, and placed it back on the counselors desk.
“Your pet, he is some type of cat, yes? I was never allowed pets, my father is allergic to most everything.”
[Ensign Charles-Louis, Engineering]
“Yes, he’s an Ocelot. They mainly come from the South American region of Earth. Allergic to most everything? WOW… I can see who that could be very inconvenient. Luckily the Saracen is somewhat of a zoo. I’m quite certain that if you wanted to find a pet you’d probably be able to do so within reason. I’d be happy to assist you if you like.”
Sheleah had concluded that Charles was definitely fit for duty and wasn’t carrying any more psychological baggage than the rest of the crew probably was. If she could do anything to help him adjust, it was her job and pleasure to do so.
- Sheleah, CNS/DO
“That sounds excellent counselor, perhaps we can discuss it over drinks sometime?” Charles suggested casually.
He was sensed their current session was “wrapping up” as it were. While he would have enjoyed talking more Sheleah, finding her quite charming, in the middle of a shift wasn’t the best time for more casual chatting.
[Ensign Charles-Louis, Engineering]
The good and bad thing about being counselor was that you life and your work usually ran together. She tried not to let it matter until it was important.
“I think I have some time free the day after tomorrow. You could even come by and meet Rex. He absolutely adores… Well… Just about everybody. Other than that, welcome to the Saracen.”
- Sheleay, CNS/DO
