Sheleah sat back and regarded the other woman for a few seconds. She knew this particular session was to evaluate her fitness for duty. Eghimea had presented with so many fascets that Sheleah was having a hard time staying on track.

Eghimea set there in her chair suddenly feeling the weight of judgement upon her. Captain Knight’s word echoing in her memory, ‘Family’. She had a family, a crew, once. Her head slowly lowered as her mind replayed various parts of her life with her family. She wanted to die, but she knew that would bring eternal damnation beside the Pah-waiths, lost within the Fire Caves. No, suicide was out of the question for her.

She looked up and saw Sheleah as she was just about to begin speaking. The weight of judgement seemed crushing. No different than the day she was found guilty of the deaths of her crew. Her mind once more played back that memory for her.

“I believe that you and I have a lot of ground to cover. I don’t believe that anything you’ve been through should be taken lightly and, as long as you’re on this ship, I’m not going to do that. I think we should talk more in depth about everything you’ve brought up today so, if I release you for duty, that really needs to be part of our understanding because I’m not certain if it’s safe otherwise.” she explained.

Eghimea drew in a deep breath as once more Captain Knight’s words set heavily upon her, ‘accountability’. She placed her face into her waiting hands as she collected her thoughts and silenced the memories. She let out a deep sigh before lifting her eyes once more to Sheleah, “I’m sorry.”

She wasn’t sure what she was apologizing for, but it seemed right.

“I can’t go back,” Eghimea said leaning back in her chair. “I…” she started to say but then fell silent once more, then decided not to add more for the poor alien to deal with. “I don’t have a choice but to push forward,” she finally said softly. “I…I will continue speaking with you. That said, I have one request,” she said in a low voice that bordered on submissive. It was a strange tone that just didn’t seem to fit the Bajoran woman, but she still pressed forward. “What I will share with you, will be deeply personal. Can you assure me that you will keep this information between us,” she asked.

Sheleah noted Eghimea’s change in demeanor and tone. Off to her right Rex bounded out of his little bed and began playing with a jingly ball on the floor.

Eghimea felt raw and uncomfortable. She wanted to get up and walk out but knew she didn’t have much choice. There was nowhere else for her to go. She wondered if during the trial if she had felt this alone. It was a strange sensation for her. Never had she had to seek an answer from her memory before. Normally, they spring to life before her mental eyes as she thought of them.

“I believe that, in most cases, the only way out of a situation is through it and you definitely have a lot to go through. I also strictly adhere to Doctor/Patient confidentiality. The Captain, or Dr. Knight, may ask general questions about our sessions as it related to areas they’re concerned with but they’ll never know what we talk about here because not even Rex will tell them.”

Feeling overwhelmed Eghimea simply nodded then spoke, “what’s next?”

Sheleah could clearly see that Eghimea was becoming overwhelmed.

“I’d like you to rest for two days. I know you think you’ve probably had quite enough of that but, consider this resting with a purpose. After you’ve rested for two days you can report for duty. I will see you seven days from now unless you, or somebody else, alerts me to an issue and we decide that we need to meet earlier than that. I think that about does it for now.”
