The results came back in about 12 hours but Hannah had them run the full 3 day culture. One of the chemicals they used was causing the reaction. So they were having to find a different protein base.

Rather than calling Siarram to Sickbay to tell him that, Hannah went and found him. Heading toward Engineering, =^=Computer where is Lt Ch’thaanaq?=^=

Asimina, med

It was Siarram’s day off, so he wasn’t in Engineering. =^= Lt Ch’thaanaq is in the ship lounge. =^= In the lounge, Siarram was sitting at a table with a nonalcoholic drink and a book. He’d already been there about an hour, he found it more enjoyable than sitting alone in his quarters his whole day off. He finished off the drink and set the glass aside.

“Computer, halt turbolift.” The lift came to a pause. Hannah had left sickbay on deck 5 and had requested deck 11 for main engineering. “Computer redirect to deck 10 and resume.” The lift restarted and came to a halt almost immediately and the doors swooshed open to deck 10. Hannah turned right and made her way towards 10 forward. The double doors slid open and Hannah scanned the crowd for Siarram. She spotted him at a nearby table and made her way over. “Hello Siarram. May I join you?”

Asimina, med

“Of course,” Siarram replied, looking up at her. He noticed she’d finally called him by first name rather than “Lieutenant Ch’thaanaq”. He liked that better. She was in uniform, he wasn’t. Either she just barely got off duty or she was here for a work related reason. There was one way to find out which: “What’s up?” He asked curiously.

~Lt Ch’thaanaq, CE

Hannah slid into the seat with a smile. “I was just getting off duty when the results of the culture came back and I thought I would bring you the results.” One of the wait staff came by and she ordered a mango dragonfruit lemonade. It sounded fanciful, looked a bit different, but tasted amazing. She set the PaDD on the table and turned it so he could see the results and explanation. “When the lab synthesized the blood they have to create three different components, the blood cell type, the antigens attached the blood cells, and the antibodies in plasma. They used Adcexane to help create the synthetic antibodies. It’s the most commonly used chemical to recreate certain Vulcan antibodies. Apparently, with your mixed genetics you are actually allergic to Adcexane. So the natural antibodies in your blood were attacking the synthetic ones. It was a mild reaction, but if we had to give you a pint or more of the synthesized blood you would become very uncomfortable. There are several other options for them to use, so we will be testing all of those before we move forward. I have added Adcexane to your medical file as a known allergy.”

Asimina, med

Siarram nodded to what she was saying, looking at the results on her PaDD. “So I’m allergic to a component in Vulcan blood?” He asked, trying to understand. “My blood is cobalt based, maybe something more similar to Andorian antibodies would work better.” But his blood, the results of the lab’s analysis had shown, had Vulcan qualities as well, making it hard to tell what the best way to go with the synthetic blood would be. He nodded to the allergy being added to his medical file.

Hannah nodded thoughtfully. “Your blood cells are cobalt based. Your antibodies are both Andorian and Vulcan based. So it makes it difficult to know exactly which compounds to use to recreate them in the synthesized blood. The synthesized blood has to have both Andorian and Vulcan components of the correct type and amounts or the replicated blood won’t be a match for you. That can lead to severe complications. Which is why I wanted to test everything carefully. As for the allergy, yes you are allergic to a specific compound found in Vulcan blood, but not all the compounds. It is a matter of identifying the correct compound needed for you.” It was complicated, but she did her best to explain.

Asimina, med

Siarram nodded, listening to her explanation. “So we’re going to keep drawing blood and seeing what it reacts to?” He asked. He trusted she’d keep it safe, he wasn’t worried, but repeated blood draws took time out of his day. “And then you’ll tell me when there’s one that might work?”

~ Lt Ch’thaanaq, CE

Hannah shook her head, “No, we shouldn’t need another blood draw until we are sure we have found a chemical that doesn’t trigger the antibodies. I drew enough the last time and we put it in cold storage. So you shouldn’t have to come back until we are certain we can move forward with the testing.” Blood draws took time, and she could go to him, and was willing. However, repeated blood draws, even just for medical tests, weren’t ideal and could leave him light headed, dizzy, and lethargic. All of which were cause to miss duty. Hannah didn’t want to do that.

Asimina, med

Siarram nodded again. “Just page me again when you are ready.” He smiled a charming smile and looked at her, “So you’re freshly off duty and you choose to come talk to me?” The results weren’t exactly time sensitive. He was teasing her a little bit.

The seriousness was that she knew first hand what it was like to wait for a doctor to give you results or information. It may not be a big deal to them but it was to the patient. Good news, bad, or neutral it was important to the patient. Hannah knew what that was like. She did her best to never make her patients wait. It wasn’t an inconvenience for her to take time to talk to them. And a potential for a blood transfusion to go wrong wasn’t ‘insignificant.’

For Siarram, it didn’t matter much. It would, if he needed a blood transfusion, but unlike Hannah, he wasn’t the overprepared type. His thoughts were, what were the odds he’d not only be injured, but injured in a way that required blood transfusion? He’d never thought of the trouble synthesising his blood and nor had any of his previous doctors. So if it weren’t for Hannah, it wouldn’t be getting done anyway.

Hannah nodded, serious but a hint of a playful smile. “Oh yes I did. I take the care of my patients very serious. Just ask Claire or the XO. I chased him across space for 5 years to make sure his knee replacement was done correctly.” There was a story there. And of course Hannah hadn’t really chased him, but it sounded funny. Of course there was no telling how Daniel would spin that story, depending on his mood. “Besides bringing the results myself meant I got to duck out of sickbay early.”

Her drink arrived and she thanked the man and took a sip. “How are you settling into the Saracen?”

Asimina, med

Siarram smiled again, “Five years, eh? So you weren’t just in it for the medical stuff, then?” He said, implying she had been interested in the XO. “It’s a great ship. I’m not too busy, but not bored either, and the crew has been good so far.” He shrugged. “I’m pretty happy here so far.”
