The labs had worked meticulously on the blood sample that Lt Ch’Thaanaq had left with Hannah. They had finally managed to synthesize his blood. It had to be tested of course just to make sure it was safe. For that Hannah needed Siarram to come into sickbay. =/\=Asimina to,” oh dear she was so bad at this but she spoke clearly and carefully to make sure the computer recognized her intent, “Lt Ch’Thaanaq. At your early convience could you come to sickbay. Whenever you have an hour to two.=/\=

=^= It’ll be a minute, but I’ll be there. =^= was the reply Ch’thaanaq gave over the communicator. It was nearly twenty minutes later he showed up in Sickbay, his uniform… not quite as clean as when he put it on (was it possible to not get the thing dirty? It must be, other engineers did it, but Siarram seemed incapable). He stopped the first nurse he saw, “I was paged by Doctor Asimina?”

Claire smiled, “Lt Ch’thaanaq, right this way.” She led him over to a biobed that was positioned next to a miniature lab table. “I’ll go get her.” The nurse hurried off and soon Hannah came around a corner carrying a small crate and set it on the table. “The labs have finished synthesizing your blood, and I want to run a few tests to make sure it will work for you before there is a need for it.”

Siarram followed Claire to the biobed and then sat down on it while he waited. When Hannah came over and explained, Siarram eyed the crate. “So you’re going to fill me up with synthesised blood and see what happens?” He looked skeptical.

Hannah’s eyes widened a bit, “Oh no. That would be terribly reckless. No, I’m going to take a couple of tissue samples, another blood sample and mix all of those with the synthesized blood. We’ll look for a reaction, then we’ll try a topical skin test. All of these are very low key and the most invasive is drawing the blood sample.” Hannah indicated all the different sample containers and sample taking equipment in the box. “Or we could just go for bone marrow. That’s where the body creates your blood, so I could take a bone marrow sample and apply the synthesized blood to it. That will tell us conclusively. But drawing a bone marrow sample is very invasive. It requires drechtal beams to numb your leg, drawing the sample out of your femur and then a tissue migrator to close up the site. It will take about an hour and half for that, and three to get the results. So whichever you prefer.”

Drawing Andorian blood was done a little differently than Human or Vulcan blood, and Siarram did have an Andorian circulatory system, though he also had the larger Vulcan heart placed in the lower right of his chest. His bones were Andorian with Vulcan qualities: Made of a durable cartilage that if broken would shatter and be extremely painful. But they were structured like Vulcan bones which were like human bones. “I would rather results quicker but… will my physiology complicate your tests?”

“I will would need to be incredibly careful. Like humans, a bone marrow draw requires the physician to pierce the skin and insert a hollow laser into the cartilage. The issue would be finding the correct incision diameter and depth to avoid shattering the bone and calculating the perfect suction to avoid injury to surrounding tissue by extracting bone marrow. The good news in that is if the bone is damaged we can repair it fully with tissue migrators and dermal regeneration. But it is very invasive. We get the same results with the slower process. Which would end with a small amount of the synthesized blood being injected and keeping you here to monitor for a few hours. We would schedule that part for a day you have off.” Synthesizing new blood types was a slow and careful process. They could of course just keep having Siarram keep coming in to donate for himself, and that was the best option, but Hannah liked to be over cautious when it came to her patients.

The other problem with having him regularly donate for himself was donating could cause a small drop in blood pressure. Typically not a problem, and it hadn’t been a problem when he donated the first time, but he had the large lungs and heart of a Vulcan and an Andorian circulatory system, making him prone to blood pressure problems. Thankfully, he did not have blood pressure problems now but it was something to watch for. “Sounds like you’re in favour of the slower process. Besides, if the bone is damaged, it won’t feel very good.” And by that he meant it would hurt. “So let’s do the slow one.” Hannah was the doctor here. Besides what Siarram needed to know to keep himself healthy, he knew absolutely nothing about medicine and he certainly didn’t pretend to. He’d do whatever she thought was best.
