Her grin disappeared and she shook her head. “No. Kip and Janey adopted me when I was two, but they died when the Klingons attacked during the brief war.” Her eyes narrowed slightly before she shrugged. “It was a hard time for a lot of people.” Finally she looked at Dante. “I was twelve and the colonists who decided to stay after took me in. I stayed with some friend’s of my parents to finish my school and until I was old enough to go to the Academy.”

He nodded as she finished, she was right of course, it was a hard time for many and she wasn’t the only one to tell it from that war and the one straight after. “I’m sorry to hear that, but it shows some impressive degree of determination to make the Academy after it.” Dante glanced at her a moment with a small smile, then moved his eyes back to the hills and horses for a short time in silence.

Gazing at him, her grin returned and she had an almost impish grin in her unnaturally vivid eyes. “Hey, since we’re on the holodeck, there’s no reason we can’t go riding right now, if you can handle a challenge.”

That brought a laugh out of Dante and he turned his head to her again. “I am a Captain of a star ship, and riding is in my blood” he feigned wounded pride at the suggestion he couldn’t handle a challenge, or perhaps it was his Italian ancestry that demanded a settling of the question. “I get Cash though, your not saddling me with Lacey like I have to be wrapped in cotton wool first time out.” Flashing a grin her way, he came easily to his feet and held out a hand in an offer to help her to her feet. It was a subconscious thing on his part, he knew she could have just blinked and appeared standing at the bottom of the hill waiting for him, but this seemed just the right thing to do in the moment.

Captain Knight, CO

With a grin, Cori took his hand and stood up. She was about to walk off but then gazed at him side ways with a smirk. “A tip for you though, Captain. Never assume the sweet ones don’t have a spark of fire in them.” Cori then moved off down the hill.

As they approached, the horses stayed where they were but they, Cori and Dante shimmered for a moment. The horses were then tacked up and ready to ride, whereas a moment before they were peacefully grazing. Cori herself was still wearing her her jeans and boots, but her hand carried a couple carrots. Dante himself was appropriately ready to ride as well, though it was notable that she didn’t bother with riding helmets.

Moving closer, Dalton whistled slightly and make a clicking noise with her tongue. Cash and Lacey raised their heads and Lacey snorted, almost in acknowledgement.
