Sinclair noted the attempt at humor and chuckled. He also noted the subtle physical manifestations of discomfort, and he asked “Do you know what I did before I was a Counselor, Chief?” with a mischievous glint in his eye.

Sinclair, CNS

Sha paused and turned to glance at him. Her head tilted slightly, obviously a human side trait, making her look like a curious predator. The glint in his eye hitched her chest but she maintained her outward appearance. “No… but you have me curious, I confess.” She turned to face him completely and crossed her arms. It wasn’t menacing in any way, or even boredom. She had planted her feet slightly and his notice would sense more a protective stance than a combative one. But the protection was for herself, not him. The shields were rising and bolstering, even as he watched her. No outward sign one could point at. But if he was trained to read half species and non humans, he would notice the Klingon in her surfacing to protect her as if his answer was going to be that he had been a ‘half breed hunter’.

She was rarely off balance. But for some reason, Sinclair had done that… in being in the room when she arrived, in speaking with her without reprimand, and in just being himself. She didn’t like that a total stranger made her react this way and was glad her brow was naturally furrowed with Klingon ridges. It hid the slight frown lines she was trying to keep away from her features.

“Have a seat, and I will tell you.” he said, indicating one of the chairs.

“I was a Security officer. Chief of Security, actually. USS Challenger. I started training in psychology and sociology as a way to help with my hostage negotiation, situational assessment, and suicide prevention skills. I guess I have a knack for the whole ‘head-shrinking’ thing, though.” he added with a chuckle. “Higher ups asked if I’d be interested in being a Counselor, and here I am. So… first impression? You didn’t read your morning brief before you went on your rounds, did ya?” he asked in a good-natured teasing manner, his brogue giving his words a friendly tone.

Sinclair, CNS

Sha had paused a moment, but sat down at his offering. When he mentioned he had been a CoS, it hadn’t surprised her as much as it probably should have. It explained a lot, including his alpha presence that most Councilors didn’t seem to quite posses as he did. A slight smile tugged her lip when he mentioned he had a ‘knack’ for the head shrinking business. Sometimes secondary skills did that to you. You would learn something ‘just to help’ and before you knew it, it was the end all be all of your career.

But then he asked about the brief and she stiffened slightly. It wasn’t consciously or anything. It was merely that he had challenged her. “This location is on my way to Security. It’s easier to just check everything rather than wait. I’ve sometimes found interlopers waking up from using secluded and empty locations for trysts that wouldn’t otherwise be possible because of roommates or shift rotations. So coming into these rooms at the beginning of the day makes more sense than allowing them to be occupied ‘safely’ till after morning shift briefs.” She realized she was making excuses, and it rankled her. What ‘was’ it about this man that made her want to prove herself? She cut her answer short and her answer came out with a slight shake of her head. “So, no… I haven’t read my morning reports, yet.” The set of her jaw was obvious… she was upset.

Sinclair noted the clench of her jaw in his mind and shook his head and chuckled. “Relax, Chief. I’m just bustin’ your chops a bit. One professional babysitter to another.” he said with a wink, and leaned back in the chair. “You know, I really miss being in Security. I actually dealt with more people and got to know them better as a Security officer than as a Counselor. I think most people are either too timid or too embarrassed to want to come and see the Counselor. The majority seem to think I’m out to get them or something. Like I’m going to judge them on a personal level.” and he looked directly at Sha. “I’m not here to judge anyone. And I hope you know I was teasing about reading the morning reports. Took me a while to realize that, for me, it was easier to pull them up in my quarters and go over them as I was getting dressed. Just the high points, you know? See if I could get to the office and get a cup of tea or coffee, or if I needed to get right into it.” he said as way of letting her know that he wasn’t criticizing her. “And let me tell you, people noticed when I hadn’t had my caffeine that morning!” he added with a laugh.

As Sinclair mentioned the jest in his query, she relaxed a bit. “Forgive me.. I didn’t mean to insinuate.” She shook her head and shrugged. “Ok, I did. But honestly, I have the feeling your job his hard because of the Councellors at the Academy we are all first exposed to. They ‘are’ there to bust you, break you, bend you six ways to Romulus to see if they can make you snap. I understand they need to be harsh to weed out those unsuited for space and its trials. But unfortunately, that means when we get out here,” she motioned out the window into the darkness, “we then assume everyone in your position is still prodding, poking, trying to find the chinks to give you a reason to send us packing back to planetside.”

She shifted in her seat and cocked her head. It wasn’t a very Klingon thing to do, but a very human action that made her look like some twisted bird eyeing him as if weighing his threat level to her. “I will make you a deal, you help me get over my distrust and weariness around Councellors and I will see to it you get out and get to know the folks on the ship, more. How is that?” She then smiled and nodded to him as if acknowledging his suggestion, “And I will also see if I can pull up my security highlights in the morning and check them before wandering into occupied spaces.” She smiled a bit broader, curious what his reaction would be. She was no shrink, but she had learned as a half breed to quickly read people. And her gut was telling her this was someone she wanted to, and should, get to know better.

Sinclair laughed out loud and smacked his hands together. “Deal.” he said enthusiastically. He stood up and help out his hand to the Security Chief and said “You let me know when we can take a tour. You show me the sights, and I’ll buy lunch. Then, you and I will set a regular appointment. Nothing official, just shop talk. Once a week. That way you can get to know me… and how I work. You show me around, and I’ll show you what it is I do. Sound good, Chief?” he asked with a broad smile.

Sha stood up and took his hand. His grip was hard, firm, and confident. Despite her original thoughts, she was starting to like this man, and the Councellor. “Sounds like a date. And please, call me Sha. Easier on the tongue. I’m heading to my office to do the shift change lookovers,” she smiled at him, “and mark this room as ‘occupied’. But if you want, we can take a tour of the ship this afternoon. I don’t mind.” She let go of his hand, albeit reluctantly and took a step towards the door. “And I am sure I can manage to find time ‘at least’ once a week to come and let you know how my day is going.” She looked at him and nodded. “I should be going.”

“Come by when you get time for that tour, Sha. I’m looking forward to it.” he said with a smile. “And make sure your team knows that they will need to check in with me now that I am officially ‘occupying’ the office.” he added with a grin a slight chuckle. “See you soon.” and he watched as the doors slid open to allow her to leave.
