The Rovarran had just left dock at Romulus and left for a dry run to check systems and get the crew acclimated with their new ship. Purola had ordered the Senior staff to man their stations and prepare a combat training simulation, a recent simulation based on raids against the Klingon Defense Force.

Purola sat in her chair, hands clasped in front of her and legs crossed, a casual way to sit in preparation for battle. “Stations sound off” She ordered in a crisp voice, this was the first time her crew would see her in action, as it was, and it would be perfect.

“Engineering systems are all green, Commander. Warp drive is standing by and ready for engagement. All compartments secured and life support functioning within normal parameters,” Saeihr announced in a calm steady voice.

Drunis spoke up first and said “Weapons on standby and all compartments secured, Commander. Cloaking is available at your command.”

Drunis, CWpC

Narva sat to the Commander’s left. “Science ready and waiting. Also ready to offer advice when needed.”

SubCmdr Narva

Purola nodded, a satisfied smile on her face. “Engage Cloaking system. Passive scans of the nearby area” The simulation started as soon as she spoke. The information for the exercise would be available once the crew checked.

Narva put in the command for scans of the area. He waited for the scan to return some data.

There was a slight hum through the ship and then Drunis said “Cloaking system active, Commander. Chief of Warbird Control, place warp drive on standby.”

Drunis, CWpC

Saeihr’s mind calculated potential scenarios, anticipating the stresses the ship might face. Her head down focused on the console, she tapped commands into its controls, ready to implement the necessary adjustments required to keep the Rovarran at peak performance.

Lieutenant Commander Saeihr-Hilaefve
(Chief Of Warbird Control)

The Rovarran’s main sensors picked up a group of ships a few light months from their current location. A more detailed look revealed a Klingon troop transport being escorted by two or more Klingon birds of Prey, the numbers were uncertain due to their constant cloaking and decloaking. The transport was headed to one of the Klingon Colonies near Romulan space making it a prime target for assault.

Storyteller

Narva watched the sensor data. He picked up the Klingon transport and at least two other ships. “We got a Klingon transport moving near our own space. It’s being escorted but I can tell how many ships are there. I only saw two definitive signals flickering in and out.” This was one of the things Narva hated about cloaking devices. They were great when used by your side. But, was a pain when used by your foe.

SubCmdr Narva

Klingon activity near Romulan space was never a good sign, especially with a troop transport involved.

“Commander, we should prepare a message for the nearest Romulan outpost,” Saeihr suggested. “Inform them of the Klingon presence and advise them to prepare for possible attack. “Also systems are ready to divert power to the shields and weapons systems,” Saeihr called out, “Lieutenant Commander Drunis can take it from there,” she said as she looked at the weapons officer with a nod.

Lieutenant Commander Saeihr-Hilaefve
(Chief Of Warbird Control)

Three years ago, Drunis would have jumped at the chance to attack the Klingons. Now he was much more… surgical… in his application of force and violence. “Commander, I respectfully submit that attacking the convoy at this time would be a tactical error. Better that we shadow them, obtain clear scans of all ships involved and troop numbers, and where they deploy. If they stay on course to the Klingon Colony, we may be able to catch the brutes staging for an attack. That would be a much more advantageous time to strike. If they are en route to Romulan territory, we can send word to the main fleet and set up an ambush.”

Drunis, CWpC

Purola considered her senior staff’s advice “Prepare a message but don’t send it yet, I don’t want the Klingons to detect our transmission. Centurion Drunis, your tactics are acceptable. We’ll follow them for now. Centurion Saeihr-Hilaefve, keep weapons and shields on standby, I want to be ready for combat in case we are detected” She didn’t know the nature of the simulation, the description was simply Klingon Encounter 03-ID34 a medium difficulty combat test.

Commander Purola
CO

Saeihr nodded and carried out the Commander’s instructions.

Acceptable? Drunis thought to himself, even though his face remained passive. It is the most tactically sound approach and an experienced Commander would know that. Outwardly, Drunis inclined his head slightly and said “Understood, Commander.”

Drunis, CWpC

Narva continued to monitor the movement of the Klingon fleet. Or at least the ship he could actually detect.

SubCmdr. Narva

After a few moments of silence on the bridge, Drunis had a thought. As the Klingon vessels blinked in and out of cloak, he began recording measurements of the ships from a fixed point on the forward section to the farthest back point of the starboard nacelles. Even if the ships were the same class, there would be minor differences in the actual measurements. By cataloging these differences, they could get a fixed number of vessels in the Klingon group.

Drunis, CWpC

Klingon activity always stirred up a storm of emotions within her, a mixture of anger, caution, and a hint of anticipation for battle. Yet, she knew that now wasn’t the time for reckless aggression.
Saeihr watched Drunis for a moment before turning her attention back to the task at hand. The Klingons may be formidable adversaries, but they were not invincible. With careful planning and precise execution, victory could be within their grasp.

“We must be prepared for anything.” she said in a low voice but loud enough for everyone to hear.

Lieutenant Commander Saeihr-Hilaefve
(Chief Of Warbird Control)

The Rovarran followed the small Klingon escort fleet in full stealth for the better part of an hour. In that time they managed to identify at least five different Klingon Warships. The two Birds of Prey were an older D12 model that should have been decommissioned, they had been cloaking and decloaking to hide the fact that there were only two of them. The other three vessels were even older Raptor Class that were over a century outdated, the small fleet could be inferred to be a disposable force. The Transport ship was a recent design sporting thick armour and shields capable of withstanding some punishment.

Currently, only one of the Raptors and Birds of Prey were deckloaked. The small fleet had dropped out of warp, they Rovarran could pick up transmissions between the lead Bird and the Transport ship. The transport ship had to perform engine maintenance and would be occupied for the next half hour.

Saeihr narrowed her eyes as she observed the Klingon fleet through the viewscreen of the Rovarran. The sight of their adversaries always brought on adrenaline, but she knew better than to let that cloud her judgment. Her duty demanded a cool head and strategic thinking.
“What are they doing?” she asked in a roar, “We should not trust them!”
Her gaze flickered to Drunis, silently assessing his response. Klingons were not to be underestimated. The aging Klingon vessels were a curious mix, surely a testament to their resourcefulness and adaptability. To her the older models hinted at a disposable force, likely intended for a specific purpose rather than prolonged engagement.

Lieutenant Commander Saeihr-Hilaefve
(Chief Of Warbird Control)

“We don’t trust them. We don’t trust anyone not Romulan.”retorted Narva. The ships were giving off communication transmissions as if they were alone. “We’ve got communications between them. Seems like the transport is having engine issues. At least that’s what the translator says.”

SubCmdr Narva

“Trust is irrelevant. They are in Klingon space and have taken no hostile actions.” and he looked at Saeihr. “Troop movements along the border are normal for them.” He looked back at the screen where they surveyed the ‘fleet’. “This is a tantalizing target… out of date vessels and a myriad of aging Klingons with dreams of dying in ‘glorious battle’, no doubt.” He watched the scene for a few moments and then pointed. “That’s bait.” And he looked at the Commander and Sub-Commander. “If what they are doing was important, they would have newer vessels and be broadcasting communications in a secured channel. Klingons are brutes, yes… but they are not necessarily stupid.” He looked back at the screen. “They are testing us… seeing if we are watching. I say we continue to do just that… watch.”

Drunis, CWpC

“I certainly do not trust anyone who isn’t Romulan. I shall never give my adversaries the benefit of doubt. I say we engage them, on our side of the border, and ensure they are not planning an attack.” Saehir clenched her fists as she thought to herself, We should crush them for being too near Romulan space. We strike for the empire!

Lieutenant Commander Saeihr-Hilaefve
(Chief Of Warbird Control)

OOC: Fixing Split
“All that does is show why you are not in charge of tactics and weapons.” Drunis said with a disdainful glare. “And clench your fists all you like, Centurion. But for someone who shows great tactical aptitude, you are certainly not using that ability right now. Take your emotion out of it and think.” the Weapons Control Officer said loudly enough for her to hear, but was obvious he wasn’t broadcasting it to the entire bridge.

She did not respond to him but continued to read the senors.

Purola raised an eyebrow, this test was revealing more about her new crew than she’d originally thought could be revealed. Hilaefve was far more emotional than she’d thought and Drunis far more cautious. They made for a good match, neither overpowering the other but both giving advice in either direction. Narva’s comment about not trusting anyone not Romulan amused the older Commander, the folly of youth, one should not trust even their fellow Romulans, trust was for Family and family alone “Right now they are simply skirting the edge of our space, unless they cross into our territory we won’t strike. I am curious as to why they would assign such frail vessels to escort troops and what use troops would be in such a remote and unimportant world” She tapped her chair in thought “While they are stopped get a closer scan of that transport vessel, I want to know what compliment they are carrying. Centurion Drunis is correct, we shall proceed with caution but we will brook no threat to the empire.”

Commander Purola
CO

Considering the notable level of caution evident in this training exercise, Saeihr could only assume it would be dull and uneventful. “Very well, I suppose we’ll wait and observe the Klingon vessels.” She manned her controls as she thought, Hopefully the Klingons initiate attack and we get to see some real action.

Lieutenant Commander Saeihr-Hilaefve
(Chief Of Warbird Control)

Caution wasn’t always a bad thing. It was prudent not to show their hand. Did the Klingons know they were present? If not, being hidden would be a benefit.

SubCmdr Narva

Centurion Drunis, CWpC

Three things of note came up from more detailed sensor readings. Narva would note a frequency hidden under the open chatter. Extensive checks revealed spacetime coordinates in a Klingon code being transferred between the various warships, without breaking the code they couldn’t yet tell where it was but it was safe to say that the location was not the planet where they were originally headed.

The tactical analysis showed that although the warships were of an older make their cloaking technology was new, too much for some of the older ships to handle wich explained their constant decloaking, it was likely that they were still working out issues before they could proceed with their mission.

Finally, Hilaefve’s tracking showed something odd about the way the transport moved through empty space, it didn’t fly as a ship of its make should, and the engines were under considerably more strain than the model should be under as if it was transporting far greater mass than it was designed for.

As Saeihr-Hilaefve analyzed the data streaming in from the sensors, her mind raced with possibilities. The Klingons were up to something, that much was certain. Their presence on the edge of Romulan’s space, coupled with the unusual behavior of their vessels, set off alarms in her strategic mind.
“It appears the Klingons are not merely passing through,” she murmured to herself, eyes narrowing as she delved deeper into the readings. “Their movements suggest a hidden agenda, one that could pose a threat to the Empire.”

The discrepancies in the transport vessel’s behavior intrigued her. “There’s something off about that transport,” she mused aloud. “Their cloaking technology is advanced, but not without flaws,” she noted. “Their constant decloaking suggests they’re still ironing out the kinks. We could exploit this weakness to gain the upper hand.”
