Rul waited until long after the ceremony to ping the CO for a request to meet. When the acceptance came through, he sighed heavily and pulled himself out of his office and rhe mound of reports he was sorting and made his way to the Commander’s Ready Room door. He put his shoulders back and steeled himself, pressing the button to announce his arrival.

Rh’vaurek, for his part, was mostly unfazed by the request to meet. He learned years ago, that’s just how it works on a Warbird. At the chime, he didn’t look up from the paperwork he was working on, simply calling, “come in!”

Centurion Rul walked in and came to a stop in front of his desk. Standing straight and looking syraight ahead, he said “Centurion Rul, assigned as Chief of Warbird Control, Commander. I have made a cursory assessment of all systems and found only minor issues, some of which were missed on the final inspection before the handover ceremony. I have a preliminary report available for you in your messages, if you have any questions.”

Rh’vaurek checked his messages on his terminal, reading the message quickly. “Excellent. Having a good chief in the Warbird Control department is always a good thing.” He thought out loud, before looking back at Rul. “Thank you for that, Centurion. I suspect this is more than a meeting to discuss issues missed during an inspection.”

Rul still stared straight ahead and said “Yes, Commander. I want to know if my previous actions are going to be held against me. It is, of course, understandable if that is to be the case. I simply wish to know the environment I will be serving in so I may adjust my task priorities in the most efficient way possible.”

Rh’vaurek nodded at the chair on Rul’s side of the desk. “Have a seat. Let me ask you a question. If our roles were reversed, would you hold it against me for a similar reputation?” Part of his questioning was a desire to know the other man’s thought process. He was a talented officer, and knowing how he thought could be vital in the heat of combat in the future.

Rul took the seat, but sat with his back straight. “I cannot answer that question, Commander. Because I know what instigated the… ‘incident’… that I was disciplined for. I do not know if, were I sitting in your position, I would be privy to such knowledge.” It was a calculated risk. Kad’n had never been able to reac a report on his transgression so he didn’t know how the Imperial Navy had framed what happened. Perhaps this conversation could give him some perspective on that.

“I know that the official report says you struck an admiral. But I’m sure there is something more to it than that. I know how…certain…flag officers can be, so I’m sure you had a reason to do so. My father often told me stories of the flag officers who’d give orders and not know how to carry them out themselves.” Rh’vaurek remembered one such memory fondly of his father.

Kad’n paused, his eyebrows furrowed. Is this a trick? he thought to himself. Is he setting me up to admit something? He took a pause and then said “At the time I believed that the order he had given me was both unlawful and potentially carried ramifications that would bring shame upon the Empire. I, of course, now know that I was not of sufficient experience and rank to make such an unfounded or reprehensible assumption. I have the Reeducation Center to thank for showing me the erroneous logic of my previous thought process.”

Interesting viewpoint. The Reeducation Centers are usually quite a marvel. Rh’vaurek thought to himself. “I asked, partly to get your thoughts on the matter, and partly to fill in your motivations for myself. I read the reports. What Commander hasn’t anymore. But the reports, as always, did not have your motivations.”

“My motivations were obviously flawed.” Rul said. “I am pleased that they are not part of the official account.”

He glanced down at the datapad in front of him, before changing topics. “It’s interesting that these items were missed on the initial inspection of the ship. The Warbird is up to operational standards now?”

“Well within normal operating parameters, Commander; if not exceeding those standards to the positive.” Rul said, shifting gears easily. “And I am certain the times listed were missed because they are not standard checks per regulations. Those are items that I know to be indicators of potential systems issues in the future. By identifying them now, we save ourselves a potentiality of failure in the future.”
